The qulifictions im to provide people working within the sddlery, equine nd ssocited trdes with the skills nd understnding needed to mnufcture nd repir bridles, hrness nd sddles nd ssocited letherwork items to industry stndrds, using both trditionl nd modern techniques nd mterils. They lso im to equip lerners with n understnding of the specilist commercil sector, business dministrtion nd mngement skills needed to work within or estblish successful sddlery business. These ims re chieved through the development of relevnt skills nd knowledge t the pproprite level for ech qulifiction. Emphsis is plced on sfe nd sustinble working methods nd production stndrds tht ensure mnufctured items re fit for purpose, providing sound foundtion in best prctice. Lerners re encourged to develop confidence nd commercil speed in the specifiction, costing, mnufcture nd finishing of rnge of common sddlery products s well s wreness of the wider socil, culturl nd ethicl issues ssocited with the business sector. 5 Qulifiction structure Welcome to the Sddlery qulifiction. You will find copy of the syllbus you re undertking, presented s 4 core units nd 3 optionl units. You must compete ll four core units nd two optionl units to chieve the Level 2 Certificte in Sddlery. Core Units Unit 201 Sddlery Technology is unit tht introduces the bsic crft skills necessry for the production of bridles nd hrnesses. Unit 202 Sddle Mking is specific unit for the subject you hve chosen to study. The syllbus gives detils of wht you hve to produce s evidence tht you hve chieved the outcomes listed. This unit will develop further the skills nd knowledge of production techniques in current use in the production of sddles for vriety of purposes. Unit 203 Bridle nd Hrness Mking is lso specific unit for the subject you hve chosen to study. The syllbus gives detils of wht you hve to produce s evidence tht you hve chieved the outcomes listed. This unit will develop the prcticl skills nd knowledge of bridle nd hrness functions nd purpose, mterils nd production methods to meet the requirements of the mrket. Unit 204 Business Administrtion is unit tht will introduce you to the sddlery nd relted equine business sector nd the procedures underpinning sound finncil mngement of smll business. Optionl Units: (2 to be selected) Unit Equine Studies is unit which forms n importnt bse of informtion nd prcticl knowledge of horse mngement nd veterinry cre. Unit 206 Mchining Techniques is unit tht will introduce you to the skills required to set up sewing mchines nd operte them effectively nd sfely for the production of sddlery items. Unit 207 Lorinery is unit tht will develop your knowledge of the chrcteristics nd uses of bits, fittings nd other metlwork used within sddlery. 5

6 Assessment nd qulity ssurnce At the end of ech unit, there is n ssessment record sheet to be completed by your tutor ssessor, in discussion with you, s you chieve ech of the outcomes. In ddition to this, your tutor ssessor will keep other records of your progress which you cn see, s required. Your tutor ssessor is the person who mkes ongoing decisions bout your chievement. Ech City & Guilds centre is lso required to hve n Internl Verifier who checks smple of the work of ech cndidte to ensure tht it hs been correctly ssessed nd tht records show cler route to progression. A City & Guilds Externl Verifier is llocted to centres to monitor tht ll these ctivities re crried out in ccordnce with the regultions, lid down by the Awrding Body, for these qulifictions. As student of your centre nd cndidte of City & Guilds, you too hve responsibilities. They include regulr nd timely ttendnce, following the syllbus guidelines nd presenting your work, s required, for ssessment, internl nd externl verifiction. 6

7 Centre nd Scheme pprovl Assessment for this qulifiction cn only be crried out by Approved Assessment Centres. Centres wishing to offer NPTC qulifictions must gin pprovl. New centres must pply for centre nd scheme pprovl. Existing NPTC/City & Guilds centres will need to get specific scheme pprovl to run this wrd. Centres should note tht centre or scheme pprovl for this qulifiction is vi NPTC. To pply for scheme pprovl, centres should contct nd complete form NPTC QAP. NPTC reserves the right to suspend n pproved centre, or withdrw its pprovl from n pproved centre to conduct prticulr NPTC scheme or schemes, for resons of debt, mlprctice or for ny reson tht my be detrimentl to the mintennce of uthentic, relible nd vlid qulifictions or tht my prejudice the nme of City & Guilds or NPTC. It ims to ssess the bility to use rnge of mterils, fittings, tools nd mchinery, in order to select pproprite construction, mterils nd production skills, together with fostering the the bility to trnsfer skills nd techniques used in one discipline to tht of nother. It ims to provide the lerner with brod foundtion of crft skills using both trditionl nd modern mnufcturing processes. Lerning Outcomes There re four outcomes for this unit. The cndidte will be ble to: 1 Use, mintin nd store hnd tools correctly nd sfely. 2 Prepring lether prior to skiving. 3 Stitch single nd double hnd stitching. 4 Operte mchinery correctly nd sfely. Connection with other wrds This unit is prt of the Certificte in Sddlery. Completion of ll core-units cn led on to the Advnced Certificte in Sddlery. Guided lerning hours It is recommended tht 100 hours should be llocted for this unit. This my be on full time or prt time bsis. Assessment The outcomes for this unit will be ssessed using evidence from prcticl ctivities, which will tke the form of: Prcticl exercises, using rnge of mterils nd fittings, designed to ssess the skills of the cndidte in producing sddlery components.
