1 NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY JAMSHEDPUR JAMSHEDPUR , JHARKHAND (An Institution of National Importance Under MHRD, Government of India) Director's message on the celebrations of Republic Day, 26 th January Dear Colleagues, Staff, Students, Parents and Children, Good morning On the eve of 65 th Republic Day, we extend warm greetings to all of you. We wish every teacher, staff and student of NIT Jamshedpur A Happy Republic Day. In order to transform our Institute as "the best" among the other Institutes of the country, we all have started our journey of excellence on 15 th August, 2012 with a great mission and set targets to achieve. Now, our mission and successful journey of excellence has gained the age of 18 months. At this junction, I feel it is an occasion to reveal our strengths and weaknesses of our journey of excellence. Best Practices for Effective Teaching we are very much successful in introducing the best practices of academic excellence such as distribution of detailed academic calendar, detailed course handout, compulsory class room attendance, change of examination pattern, introduction of new evaluation scheme, new schedule of examination, implementation of code of conduct during examination, summer quarter classes for backlog courses, departmental society activities and Finishing School. The introduction of the above best practices in academics has improved the performance of our students in their semester examinations. It is evident from the recent Autumn Semester 2013 results that number of failures is tremendously reduced. I congratulate our students for their hard work and success in exams. I also appreciate the invaluable efforts rendered by the teachers and the staff in training our students. We made the semester registration and fee payment "online" to enable the students to complete the process quickly.

2 The current Spring semester-2014 has commenced from 06/01/2014. Its "academic calendar" and "some useful suggestions to NIT Jamshedpur students" have been released in advance. I advice all students to carefully follow them. I wish all the students "very best" for your success in the current semester. However, for any shortcoming of implementation of best practices in academics, we shall take the responsibility in making timely decisions and necessary improvements to achieve academic excellence. Industry and Alumni Relations With the active participation of students, faculty and alumni we are now conducting the Alumni meet on 25 th & 26 th January 2014 (i.e., yesterday & today). We welcome all the alumni once again for this august gathering. We request our alumni to enhance various activities: collaborative research, establishment of Centre of Excellences in the emerging areas, internship, and involvement of experts in the class room teaching, establishment of Chair professors, customized continuing education programmes and campus placements. We request our Alumni to use the bank account of Endowment Fund for your valuable contributions. Infrastructure Development Providing better/ world class facilities to our students, staff and faculty who are residing in the NIT Jamshedpur campus is our prime requirement. Therefore, necessary steps have already been taken to perform renovation, maintenance and new project works. Now, CPWD has opened a project division at our NIT Jamshedpur. Civil and Electrical works are already in progress. These works includes the construction of two mega hostels for boys, reconstruction of bituminous roads in the campus, improvement of power distribution system, renovation of all academic blocks, hostels and residential buildings. All these works were being executed by CPWD as we have MoU. We understand the problems that you all may face little inconvenience while the work is in progress. We sincerely, request you all to bare the inconvenience caused. However, we shall make the necessary arrangements for the timely completion of works. The MoU signed between the CPWD (NIT Project Division Jamshedpur) and NIT Jamshedpur to undertake the work of construction, renovation and maintenance (Civil & Electrical) at NIT Jamshedpur on turnkey basis as a deposit work.

3 Recruitment of Human Resources We are focusing on Good governance and transparent process/procedures for the development of the Institute. Very recently, we have advertised for appointment of 14 officers on deputation / contract for 3 years. We have received good number of applications in response to this notification and now we are in the processing the applications. In order to improve / assure the quality of construction and renovation works (Civil / Electrical), we have recently recruited 6 Project Consultants and 3 Project Engineers to utilize their expertise in the construction and maintenance works of the Institute. Our laboratory staff is strengthened after recruiting 21 Technical Assistants/Junior Engineers in various departments to support our teaching faculty and students in their laboratory classes and in research and consultancy services. In order to enhance the teaching, research and lab developments in various departments, we have recruited 10 Visiting Professors /Adjunct Faculty from various disciplines. Recently, a total 12 Adhoc Faculty has joined in the Department of MFE, ECE and CSE to meet the urgent requirement of Departments. In order to increase the faculty strength in each department, we are now planning to recruit the new faculty through rolling advertisement. The complete recruitment process shall be made fully transparent and hire the best people among best. Implementation of 4 tier flexible faculty structure in NITs and implementation of Trainee Teachers Scheme have been kept in our Institute website for your easy reference. We are keen to implement the Trainee Teachers Scheme by recruiting the bright students from 3rd and 4th Year of NIT Jamshedpur to create high quality teachers. Student's Welfare Recently, Annual Athletic Meet-2014 is well organized. A national level automobile design competition, i.e., an Inter Institute Design and Engineering Event "Delta Shootout-2014" is now held for the first time in

4 Jharkhand hosted jointly by Adityapur Auto Cluster and Adityapur Smaller Industries Association (ASIA) with National Institute of Technology Jamshedpur. The principal sponsors for this mega event are state industry department and auto giant Tata Motors. Over 600 aspiring engineers representing 14 different teams have participated in this mega event. A special terrain track of 8 km is being made in NIT Jamshedpur campus for conducting the endurance test for four-wheelers built on given specifications. We request all the students to actively Involve/Participate in various other activities like Clubs, Departmental Society, UTKARSH, OJASS, Conferences, Hostel management and Developmental activities of the Institute. I advise all the students to actively participate in the journey of academic excellence of NIT Jamshedpur. Further, I also advise our students to build the brand image of NIT Jamshedpur for your academic and career/professional growth. Maintain the cordial relations with fellow student friends do not make any gender difference, do not hurt anybody by any means. The life cum medical insurance scheme has been implemented for the better medical facilities and insurance cover to the students. Wellness Centre and Finishing School are going to organize Art of Living Workshop during th Feb 2014 for UG first year students and th Feb 2014 for UG second Year students for development of communication skills and confidence building. Academic Departments Mandatory accreditation for all programmes in the institute is being endorsed in 19 th BOG. Hence, I request all the HODs, faculty members, staff and students of the respective departments to plan for the accreditation. In order to improve the quality of technical education, at present, the Departments are planned for the development of their labs and faculty development through TEQIP-II grants. We are strengthening the best practices, faculty development, effective teaching, research & consultancy and learning resources for the academic excellence of the Institute.

5 Research and Consultancy We promote the research and consultancy in each department through best practices: modernizing our existing laboratories as per the research requirements of our faculty and research scholars. In order to encourage the Research and Consultancy in the Institute, it is decided to utilize the TEQIP-II grants. Recently, our Institute internet bandwidth is increased for the benefit of our students, faculty and staff. Many of the faculty members have presented their research papers in the National/ International Conferences/Workshops and also attended faculty development programmes through TEQIP-II and CPDA grants. Community welfare NIT Jamshedpur is initiated the community welfare programmes; Earn-N-Learn Scheme to help the financially need students of NIT Jamshedpur for teaching Physics/Chemistry/mathematics to the poor students of Class IX, X,XI &XII from surrounding villages. Recently, a free Health Checkup Camp is also organized for the people of surrounding villages. Good Governance The academic excellence is depending on the good governance: Implementation of e-governance in the institute is our highest priority. Very shortly, the process and procedures of the governance shall be brought under e- Governance system. Our Institute MIS database has been modernized with new updated user friendly software. Entry of class attendance of students and marks of evaluation components are made mandatory in the MIS. The teachers and faculty advisers are requested to constantly update the information in MIS. We are in the process for the restructuring of non faculty cadre of the NIT Jamshedpur. The minutes of the 19 th meeting of BOG is uploaded on the institute website. A bi-monthly e-newsletter of INT Jamshedpur Campus Sapience has been launched on 20 th Jan 2014.

6 Finally, Academic excellence shall be the Brand Image of NIT Jamshedpur. In my belief, achieving academic excellence is a continuous and complex process. It involves the cluster of contributions from the people. Therefore, let us join together to build the brand image of NIT Jamshedpur. I seek your active involvement and cooperation in all the developmental activities of the institute to transform our Institute as "the best" among the other Institutes of the country.
