5 New World Apprenticeships Apprenticeship standards are gradually replacing Apprenticeship frameworks, the standards describe the occupational profile linked to the knowledge, skills and behaviours (KSBs) that bring full competence in a particular occupation. They describe how an apprentice can demonstrate mastery of this occupation by the end of the apprenticeship. The standard itself is a short, concise document containing a clear occupational profile setting out the responsibilities of the occupation and linked to the knowledge, skills and behaviours which will be applied in the workplace. The standards are proposed, designed and delivered by employers to equip apprentices with the knowledge, skills and behaviours they need to succeed in their occupation. What are the main differences? Frameworks were designed by a group of organisations relevant to the apprenticeship. The new standards are designed by groups of employers to ensure the Knowledge skills and behaviours included in the course are relevant to a specific occupation. Employers can design their own standards, and deliver the training in house. Apprentices on the old frameworks were continually assessed throughout their qualification. The new standards include a range of on-programme assessments, including an EPA (end-point assessment). Upskilling staff using Apprenticeships If you are looking to expand your internal workforce development programme then their training could be funded through the government-funded Apprenticeship scheme. Apprenticeships offer you a structured way to train your employees and unlock their potential. You will continue to pay their wages and you ll pay a contribution to the cost of training. You will save money while retaining a motivated workforce who ll see the development opportunities in your business. Benefits of standards: Not qualification driven Short & concise Focus on the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed Providing a clear and attractive shop window for parents, apprentices and business End-point assessment Ensuring that apprentices are fully competent Grading Recognising excellence Alignment to professional registration Ensuring apprentices gain professional registration where applicable

6 The Apprentice Levy Explained The Apprenticeship Levy will affect organisations with an annual payroll of more than 3 million. If your organisation falls into this category, you will pay the Levy whether you already employ Apprentices or not. The Apprenticeship Levy will be payable by employers in the UK at the rate of 0.5% of the payroll cost through PAYE alongside Income Tax and National Insurance. Levy Payer The purpose of the levy is to encourage employers to invest in apprenticeship programmes and to raise additional funds to improve the quality and quantity of apprenticeships. The Apprenticeships Levy paid by businesses can be accessed by those same businesses to fund apprenticeship training in their business. For example; If you are a Levy payer and start an employee on a 12, month standard, this 12,000 will be taken straight from your levy in monthly instalments at no extra cost to the employer. Non-Levy Employers with an annual wage bill of less than 3m will not pay the levy. Instead, Apprenticeship Standards and Frameworks will be jointly funded by employers and the Government. The government will fund 90% of the agreed price for training and assessment, and you as the employer will pay 10%. You will be able to agree a payment schedule with us and spread your payments over the lifetime of the Apprenticeship. For example; If you are a Non-Levy payer and start an employee on a 12, month standard, you will be charged 10% of this, you will pay 1,200 divided across 18 months i.e. 66 per month. Fully Funded Training If you are an employer with less than 50 employees and have a salary bill of less than 3 million then you can employ a year-old on an apprenticeship free of charge.

16 It s nice that my employer does value me enough to give me free training and education to make me grow. The fact that the company is giving me that means that in return I will give them my loyalty as a member of staff. I think it s a great opportunity for me to do the apprenticeship because it doesn t cost the company anything for me to do it, I don t have to pay for the qualification and I m upskilling, so they re not losing a member of staff and I m gaining more skills and qualifications.
