It IS NOT for youth seeking further education or training through university. It should be used by youth seeking work, with help from: o o o o o Career counselors Parents Friends Employers Teachers.

I tell stories to people of all ages. I ll help you complete your story to find work. I ll help you use this Pocket Guide to prepare your profile.

There are activities to complete as you proceed through the Guide.

Doing - resume writing, application writing, assisting with canvassing techniques 7. Follow up. You need to have a folder to complete activities from this Guide. Keep ALL your information together in this folder.

He will remind you take care with your profile. He will show you that the best way to get work is to plan and organise. He will show you how to contact people and what to say. 9 A Pocket Guide for Youth 9 Step 1: Preparing and Reviewing: In this step you construct your story You: Who are you? Interests, skills, knowledge, age, gender, health, beliefs, hobbies Your Community: Will it influence the work you may choose? Family, peers, friends, community groups Your Environment: What opportunities or constraints are in your location? What access do you have to employment market, government grants, and projects?

10 10 A Pocket Guide for Youth My Story Summarise your story on the next page. With the following points: 1. Your age, gender, health, any other. 2. Your interests and hobbies 3. Your skills and knowledge think about how you use: o Communication skills: writing, reading and speaking, listening o Technology: computers, photocopiers, phones, faxes, o Teamwork o Problem solving, o Mathematics (for shopping, budgets, transport)..,..in your everyday life. These are also the skills and knowledge you need for work. If you need more space to record your story, use a book and keep it in your folder

Here are some ideas: Growing things; looking after children; massaging; analysing finances; teaching; working on computers; playing sport; researching issues; managing a shop; selling clothes; using tools; playing in a band; interviewing people; helping sick people; fixing cars; taking photos, interior design, cooking, woodwork, sewing, healthcare, banking, interpreting/translating, acting/ singing/modelling. This list is suggestions. You can list other tasks.

Fill in the table over the page by referring back to previous steps. This will focus you towards a realistic goal for work. 33 A Pocket Guide for Youth 33 Step 5: Deciding In this step you plan a career Sorting your career favourites. In this step you can organise and/or compare your favourites. You can check information about industries, occupations, courses and contact organisations related to your career favourites. You need to narrow your choice to (i) career fields and (ii) occupations.

34 34 A Pocket Guide for Youth Career Fields Career fields are families of occupations and they have a common theme. For example: o o o Private Sector Banking, factories, farms, hotels and restaurants, shops, supermarkets, retail, galleries, textiles, technology etc Government Sector Local, provincial, central, national Community Sector NGOs, childrens services, libraries, health, medical, aid projects, international development projects Which career field suits your plans, skills and knowledge and access to employment?

37 A Pocket Guide for Youth 37 You are close to going out to seek work. Now you will have a realistic work profile and it is time to make a résumé. This will (i) help potential employers know about your skills, knowledge and experiences and (ii) help you to seek work in areas that suits your profile.

38 38 A Pocket Guide for Youth Step 6: Doing In this step you build a résumé and identify potential employers you look for a job A résumé is a document that tells an employer about your skills, knowledge and experience as it relates to specific jobs. A good résumé can play an important part in securing a job. This step describes how (i) to build a résumé and (ii) submit it for a job. A template follows. You will pull together all the previous information from this Guide

Make sure the Contact Details include as much of the following as possible: Phone, , address. 2. Your Job Goals should be one sentence stating what you would like to do. Example 2: I want to work in the fashion industry to design new and interesting and garments. Example 3: I want to work with computers and learn to solve problems with software applications Qualifications, awards On this page you should list any qualifications, awards, prizes you have won or other achievements. Include: 1. Name of award 2. Date received Put the most one recent first 3. Awarding organisation

Dates (Put most recent jobs first) 5. Contact person and phone number (if available) Competencies Skills and knowledge Check pages 18 and 22. Q u a l i f i c a t i o n s 1. Write several sentences to summarise your skills and knowledge 2. Give several specific examples of where you have applied your skills and knowledge (refer to the Work Experience page of your résumé.

42 42 A Pocket Guide for Youth Hobbies and interests List your hobbies and interests, especially those that have specialist skills and knowledge relevant to the world of work (computer technology, child care etc) Referees List the (i) name and title, (ii) organisation and (iii) contact details for two referees who can comment on your skills, knowledge and character as a potential employee. Check they agree to be your referee first. Your completed résumé should be organised like this: Final Page Knowledge Work Experience Qualifications Cover Make copies and staple or bind to secure the pages together.

43 A Pocket Guide for Youth 43 (ii) Submitting your résumé for a job. Create your personal search strategy There are four easy steps to follow: 1. Research jobs in your area by visiting workplaces; talking to business and service providers; asking friends and other contacts about possible work. 2. Check suitable job leads through shop windows, newsletters, newspaper, government departments, and other agencies. 3. Confirm the employer s needs. 4. Choose the right approach.

44 44 A Pocket Guide for Youth In Summary: Applying for work is most effective when you can: 1. Meet the potential employer. 2. Submit your résumé. 3. Make sure you have their contact details. 4. Confirm your contact details 5. Follow up.

45 A Pocket Guide for Youth 45 Step 7: Follow Up In this step you keep in touch with workplaces where you have lodged your résumé or applied for work. Keep a record of the contact person, their phone number or address. Ask if you can follow up in a week, or other agreed period of time if you don t hear from them before this time. Follow up with personal contact if you don t hear from the potential employer as agreed. Good luck in your seeking work activities
