The Order is the founding body of St John Ambulance worldwide, whose diverse charitable and commercial ambulance, first aid, training and health care services are delivered by 41 autonomous St John organisations (the larger of which are known as Priories and the smaller Associations ). In addition, the Order operates an Ophthalmic Hospital in Jerusalem providing excellent eye care for the people of Palestine. On 25 October 1999, the Order completed a programme of constitutional change, which established a new international governing body (the Grand Council), supported by a small Order Secretariat where this post will be based. The Order Secretariat s function is to service Grand Council and its sub-committees, co-ordinate Order affairs worldwide and encourage practical co-operation between the 8 Priories and 33 Associations of the Order. It also has a small-scale assistance programme for those St John Associations that require support and has operated a capacity-building programme since 2006 to develop organisational capacity with selected St John Associations. Based at Clerkenwell in London, the Order Secretariat is currently staffed by: the Secretary General (the Order CEO responsible for carrying out Grand Council s decisions); an Administrator/Financial Controller; the St John Associations Support Coordinator (half time); the International Development Officer and the Order PA. Following an external review of its assistance programme to Associations and the development of a Consolidated Plan of Support to St John Associations, the Order Secretariat has recently recruited a Communications and Training Coordinator. The successful candidate will replace the St John Associations Support Coordinator who will be going on maternity leave at the end of February Page 2
