1 Level 5 CPD Award in Leadership and Management THE QUALIFICATION This qualification develops a comprehensive range of management skills, assisting learners in gaining the knowledge required at this level. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS A related job role in a supervisory/managerial position is to be considered a plus. METHOD OF DELIVERY Qualification is flexible to suit every learner s requirements and employers. It may be completed through a blended approach, that is a combination of tutor led sessions and distance learning. QUALIFICATION OVERVIEW A 1,500 assignment will be provided to all learners upon completion of the seven modules. Students will be asked to choose one from four different assignment topics. The assignment topics will relate to the seven modules being taught. OVERALL COURSE OBJECTIVES Describe the organisation s purpose and its stakeholders Explain the organisation s structure, functional areas and managerial roles Describe the specific responsibilities of middle managers in enabling the organisation to achieve its goals Explain how interpersonal relationships and communication skills affect managerial performance Identify barriers to communications and effective interpersonal relationships in the organisation and devise strategies to overcome these Critically assess own knowledge, skills, personal attributes and behaviour, and their effect on own managerial ability Identify areas for personal development to improve own managerial behaviour Plan and set priorities for future development Outline actions that can be taken in a managerial Build stronger relationships with people Be able to review effectiveness of own capability and performance in meeting organisational values and goals

2 COURSE OUTLINE OF WHOLE PROGRAMME The training programme is made up of seven modules covering a wide spectrum of topics which are related to leadership and management: Module 1: Leadership that Inspires (1 ECTS) Module 2: Managing Conflict within the Team (1 ECTS) Module 3: Managing People: Effective Communication (1 ECTS) Module 4: Managing People: Motivation and Engagement (1 ECTS) Module 5: Managing the Performance of Others (1 ECTS) Module 6: Making Meetings Work (1 ECTS) Module 7: Leading Successful Teams (1 ECTS) COMPETENCES, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES OF EACH MODULE Module 1: Leadership that Inspires Understand the organisation s purpose, stakeholders, structure and functional areas and managerial roles. Understand the specific responsibilities of managers in enabling an organisation to achieve its goals. 3 Module 2: Managing Conflict within the Team Evaluate the effectiveness of the organisation in recognising conflict and providing the necessary support mechanisms Plan improvements to the identification and approach to dealing with conflict Explain the effects of conflict on individual and team performance at work Describe the stages in the development of conflict Understand the causes of conflict in the organisation Know how to deal with conflict in a team Understand techniques for managing interpersonal conflict Describe how a manager could promote a positive atmosphere in order to minimise the adverse effects of conflict Implement improvements to the identification and approach to dealing with workplace conflict Describe ways of dealing with difficult situations where it is not possible to meet the needs and/or expectations of others within organisational guidelines and constraints Critically evaluate own ability to identify and deal with workplace conflict effectively

4 Module 3: Managing People: Effective Communication Describe the stages in the communication cycle Identify possible barriers to communication in the workplace Explain the relevance of the communication cycle for effective communication in management Explain how to overcome a potential barrier to communication Describe the main methods of written and oral communication in the workplace and their uses Explain how non-verbal communication can influence the effectiveness of oral communication Explain the value of feedback in ensuring effective communication Explain why it is important to have a record of communication Understand the nature and importance of the communication process in the workplace Understand the main methods of communication Understand the importance of effective communication in management Describe methods of maintaining accurate records of electronic and oral communication Identify the main advantages and disadvantages of written methods of communication Identify the main advantages and disadvantages of oral communication Identify actions to improve own performance in communicating Outline the importance of keeping a record of oral communication Assess own effectiveness in communication Assess the effectiveness of a range of verbal and written communication methods within your area of the organisation Collect and analyse feedback on own verbal and written communication skills Assess own performance in a frequently used method of communication Develop appropriate criteria to evaluate own ability to communicate effectively

5 Module 4: Managing People: Motivation and Engagement Review the prevailing leadership style in the organisation Review the motivation and commitment to the organisation s values and goals amongst the people you lead Review your own leadership ability to motivate people and build commitment to achieve the organisation s goals Different motivation theories and their impact on the performance of the organisation The benefits of having a motivated workforce Identify the difficulties encountered within teams The causes of conflict within teams Different approaches to conflict and demotivated team Applying knowledge and understanding Assess the levels of motivation and commitment to the organisation s values and goals amongst the people you lead Identify the factors shaping levels of motivation and commitment Assess own ability to use different leadership styles, as appropriate to the situation and the people Assess own ability to motivate others and build commitment to the organisation s values and goals

6 Module 5: Managing the Performance of Others Evaluate own ability to fulfil key responsibilities of the leadership role Evaluate own awareness of emotions in shaping performance Evaluate own ability to set direction and to gain the commitment of others Understand the nature and importance of the communication process in the workplace Understand the main methods of communication Understand the importance of effective communication in management Describe methods of maintaining accurate records of electronic and oral communication Set a clear model for others to follow. Conduct appraisals or routine reports and identifying training needs. Set objectives and targets for the team and ensuring those objectives are achievable. Provide a framework in which people can grow. Be aware of welfare matters, identifying those who may need counselling and providing help, or identifying where help can be found, in appropriate cases. Provide a sense of purpose and motivation to individuals and to the team as a whole. Deal with matters of discipline, either informally or, if necessary, formally. 7 Module 6: Making Meetings Work Understand the purpose of and preparation required prior to a meeting Chair/lead a meeting within an organisation Explain the different types and purposes of meetings in the organisation and justify situations when these different types of meetings would be appropriate Explain how a manager should prepare effectively prior to a meeting Explain the importance of listening and other interpersonal skills Set objectives for and plan a meeting in the organisation Chair/lead a meeting adhering to meeting terminology, protocol and procedures Applying knowledge and understanding Defining the overall objective of the meeting Setting the agenda - the topics to be discussed Deciding on the people to be invited Identifying the location for the meeting Chair the meeting / control a meeting effectively Prepare the minutes Assess own effectiveness in verbal communication (via meetings) Assess the effectiveness of being challenged during a meeting Develop appropriate criteria to evaluate own ability to manage meetings effectively

8 Module 7: Leading Successful Teams Evaluate the effectiveness of the organisation and of self in managing individuals to achieve organisational goals and objectives Develop and lead teams Evaluate how effectively the organisation manages individuals to achieve its stated goals and objectives Analyse own ability to manage individuals to achieve organisational goals and objectives Explain the importance of direction and values in creating effective teams Explain how to apply one recognised theory of motivation to teams in own area of operation Explain the use of techniques to evaluate the team s performance Explain the process of delegation Review own ability to develop and lead teams Analyse the advantages and disadvantages of delegation Critically review own beliefs, attitudes and value systems FEES Level 5 CPD Award in Leadership and Management 531 (inclusive of VAT).
