1 CITY OF BROOKLYN PARK invites applications for the position of: Recreation Youth Worker - Zanewood Recreation Center SALARY: OPENING DATE: 02/11/19 CLOSING DATE: POSITION SUMMARY: $ $22.45 Hourly $3, $3, Monthly $36, $46, Annually 02/25/19 11:59 PM The award-winning Brooklyn Park Recreation and Parks Department is looking for highly motivated, team-oriented and enthusiastic individual who has a desire to make a difference in Brooklyn Park by leading the planning, implementing and supervising teen and adult programs. This full-time position is critical to the city's goal of bringing opportunities to youth into structured activities designed to positively impact their development and reduce barriers to participate. It will also support adult drop-in programs. The Recreation Youth Worker - Teens & Adult position is full-time and will work independently under the general supervision of the Facility Coordinator and the Recreation Specialists. This individual will also be a member of a results-oriented staff that works together to develop innovative service delivery methods and program focused on quality, partnerships and service to our community. This individual must be able to display cultural competency in a high pace work environment. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Develop positive relationships with teens and adults attending program/events at the center and off-site Develop positive relationships with youth who attend afterschool and off-site programs Promote, plan, implement, evaluate, and organize programs Understand policies and procedures to ensure safe environment exists for all participants; maintain order, complete required reports Assist with ongoing youth program development; gather program idea feedback from participants Promote programs and activities to teen/adults in the community, at events, and in the schools Assist the Recreation Specialists and/or Recreation Facility Coordinator with duties Attend all staff development/training programs and staff meetings Understand, reflect, communicate and assure customers conduct themselves in accordance with policies

2 Maintain order and assure patrons adhere to the policies specific to the Recreation Center Assist staff with planned activities to maintain a safe and positive environment and assist with preparing materials and supplies as needed Be familiar with emergency and accident procedures Work cooperatively with all recreation program staff, administrative staff, office staff and other outside agencies Develop and maintain positive staff relations Recommend corrective actions on disciplinary issues that arise based on personnel policies Promote, plan, implement, and evaluate out of school time programs Assist in department projects and programs Promote, plan, implement, and evaluate teen and sports programs Gather data and complete program evaluations Proficiently promote programs through social media, technology, and communications MINIMUM AND DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Education High school diploma or equivalent Experience One year experience working in youth development activities with teens and/or youth in afterschool programs, summer camp and family events One year experience working with at risk participants from a variety of cultural backgrounds Licenses/Certificates A valid driver's license CPR/First Aid certification (or ability to obtain within first 3 months of employment) Equivalency An equivalent combination of education and experience closely related to the duties of the position MAY be considered Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Ability to provide a level of customer service that meets/exceeds customer expectation and satisfaction Ability to professionally exhibit cultural sensitivity, patience, and understanding in the course of work duties Ability to relate to and work with individuals representing a variety of diverse backgrounds and cultures Ability to lead groups and engage teen and adults in leisure activities

3 Ability to interact with participants teen and adults in a caring, respectful and professional manner Ability to maintain patience, compassion, and empathy for at-risk participants Ability to maintain positive environment for all participants Ability to enforce disciplinary rules following established policies and procedures Ability to exercise sound judgment and make rational decisions to resolve problems/conflicts in compliance with established policies, procedures, and practices Ability to be flexible and have time management skills Desired Qualifications Associate (or higher) degree in Recreation, Youth Development, Education, Adaptive Recreation/Inclusion or related degree Two (2) years of highly related experience One year experience using Microsoft office and Rec Trac or other scheduling software Training and/or coursework leading to a Recreation, Youth Development, Education, Adaptive Recreation/Inclusion or related degree Previous experience providing staff training Previous experience working in a recreation center, afterschool program development and mixed income settings Previous experience in program development and implementation youth outreach programs, sports, skills camps, and clinics for teens and/or adults Previous experience overseeing part-time and seasonal staff Ability to work with and implement programs in a drop-in setting Previous experience working in a fast pace environment and manage multiple task, projects, and programs Previous experience working with diverse communities Fluency in Spanish, Hmong, Russian, Somali or Vietnamese language(s) Ability to provide optimal customer service and communication to parents/guardians/communities Previous experience with communications, technology and social media Background Check The City has determined that a criminal background check and/or qualifications check may be necessary for certain positions with this job title. Selection Process The selection process will consist of one or more of the following steps: a rating of relevant education and experience and/or an oral examination (100%). It is important that your application show all the relevant education and experience you possess. This information will be used to determine which candidates will proceed in the selection process. A submitted application is also used to verify the answers to any supplemental questions. Only those candidates who attain a passing score (70%) on each step in the selection process will be placed on the eligible list. The Human Resources Department reserves the right to limit the number in any phase of the

4 selection process. Eligible List The eligible list will expire one month after it has been established.
