1 POSITION DESCRIPTION National Sport Manager This position description describes the duties that the appointee will be expected to undertake. It should not be regarded as a complete and exhaustive list and does not prevent the addition, alteration or deletion of duties from time to time as determined by the Chief Executive. It is inherent in all areas of SLSNZ work that staff are required to apply and uphold the principles of SLSNZ. About Surf Life Saving New Zealand (SLSNZ) Our vision is Saving lives in our communities while developing leaders and champions. Our purpose is To lead and support surf life saving in NZ. SLSNZ is a Not for Profit organisation and the National Association representing 74 Surf Life Saving Clubs. Today a little over 18,500 people are members of SLSNZ that save over 1,000 lives every year. Providing beach patrols on 80 of New Zealand s busiest beaches each summer is just part of what we do. Being a proactive lifesaving service, sporting organisation and providing a range of education programmes ensures that we keep New Zealand s favourite playground safe for everyone. 2 Job Title National Sport Manager Responsible for Development and management of the SLSNZ sport strategy Reports to Chief Operations Officer Location Any SLSNZ Office Direct Reports Sport Development Officer National Coach (part time contractor) Equipment & Logistics Officer (seasonal contractor) Functional Reports Regional Sport Managers Event Water Safety Officer Volunteer Reports High Performance Management and Selectors Purpose of the Position To be the leader for life saving sport within SLSNZ and manage the different aspects of sport, including: The strategic direction of sport SLSNZ sports events High Performance sport and pathways Sport development Coach and official development National Sport Committee and Advisory Committees Relationships with Sport NZ, HPSNZ and other NSO s Key Relationships: - SLSNZ Staff & key volunteers - Sport NZ (including HPSNZ) - Other National Sporting Organisations - Local Government - Event suppliers & organisers - Funders and Sponsors - Athletes, Coaches and Managers - National Sport Committee - Sport Officials and Event Referees - Event safety authorities - ILS and other international surf life saving organisations, particularly SLSA.

3 Key Responsibilities General Working closely with the National Sport Committee, Advisory Committees and SLS Sport Staff oversee the development and implementation of the sport strategy, to include a high performance strategy. Ensure sport related income budgets are achieved. Ensure sport related expenditure remains within budgeted levels. Manage relationships across a diverse range of stakeholders, both internal and external. Manage and support any direct reports following SLSNZ HR policies & procedures and HR best practice. Develop a sports communication plan that is effectively managed. Monitor international developments and where appropriate lead or work closely with other parties on R&D initiatives. Maintain and update life saving sport regulations and related manuals including equipment specifications. o Surf Sport Competition Manual o Competition Safety Manual o Equipment Specification Manual o Pool Competition Manual (50m/25m) o Surf Sport Policies SPS Ensure the two-way communication processes between national and local sport committees and technical groups are working effectively. Ensure members are informed of our drug free stance and rules from DFSNZ. o Advertise rules to all members yearly and update SLSNZ website. o Advertise rules to all selected High Performance Squads and Teams. o Manage the relationship with DFSNZ and testing requirements in events. o Work with DFSNZ on any sanctioning of members due to misuse of banned substances. SLSNZ sports events: Oversee the delivery of all events in the National Events calendars. o Nationals o Oceans o BP IRB Champs o Pool Rescue Champs o NI IRB Champs o SI IRB Champs o NZ Surf Boat Series o NZ Surf Boat Representative Challenge o NZ Representative Challenge o Trans-Tasman Surf Boat Challenge Biannually Support local/regional SLSNZ staff to ensure all local/regional events are delivered to a consistent high standard throughout New Zealand and there is an aligned and co-ordinated calendar of events.

4 Work with the Event Water Safety Officer to ensure national, regional and club sporting events meet necessary safety and risk management standards Be the SLSNZ representative at selected events. Ensure events are reviewed and outcomes lead to a continuous improvement model. Manage all clearance letters for our members competing internationally as required. Manage the appointments process for Event Managers and Event Safety Officers and Event Referee s for all National Events. o Nationals, Oceans, IRB s, Pool Rescue Champs, Surf Boats, NZRC Events, NI IRB s, SI IRB s High performance sport and development pathways. Develop the high performance plan that is part of the sports strategy, with a focus on winning the biannual World Championships and the development pathways needed to build for future events. Manage the appointments process for Team Management and Selectors for all Open, Development, Youth, Surf Boats and IRB Teams. Oversee the selection process for national squads and teams. This includes selection policies and criteria for selectors. o IRB Squad and Teams o Surf Boat Teams Have in place talent ID processes, working in cooperation with other relevant NSO s. Maintain a close working relationship with Sport NZ (including HPSNZ) and maximise any funding available. Manage the National Team(s) Management role(s) o Open o Development o Youth o Surf Boats o IRBs Manage the promotion and endorsement for all High Performance Athlete and Management personal scholarship applications through HPSNZ. Manage all athlete agreements with SLSNZ. Coach and official development Ensure there is a Coach and Official development strategy as part of the Life Saving Sport Plan. o o o Open Squad and Teams Development Squad and Teams Youth Squad and Teams

5 Key Performance Indicators These will be developed and agreed between the line manager and the appointed employee. KPI s will be reflected in the appointed employee s personal development plan and will relate to specific measures linked to key responsibilities. An understanding of learning and development pathways. IT literacy. Ability to work unsupervised in remote locations away from home for extended periods, including weekends. Person Specification The appointee should be able to demonstrate: Excellent relationship management skills with strong networking ability. Project and event management experience a start to finish approach with proven ability to manage a number of concurrent activities. Depth of experience in planning and managing budgets and cost centres. The ability to lead, coach, develop, support and positively influence others particularly in implementing change. Well-developed communication skills. Strength in problem solving, critical and analytical thinking. The ability to see the big picture while paying attention to detail. A positive and professional approach reflecting SLSNZ s values. A passion to perform and contribute to SLSNZ. A broad understanding of SLSNZ or previous exposure to and experience in life saving sport. Preferred Experience and knowledge of Surf Life Saving. A successful record as an event manager. Experience with high performance sport, including development of coaches and officials. Tertiary qualification in sport / event management or equivalent. Volunteers are crucial for the success of all aspects of life saving sport. The successful candidate will be someone who can lead, motivate, support and positively influence these volunteer networks.
