1 Title: Department: Information Technology Services Reports To: Director of Enterprise Services Prepared/Revised: 5/11; Revised 10/11, 7/15 Purpose, Scope & Dimension of Job: The role of the Business Intelligence (BI) Systems Analyst is to design, develop, secure, administer and support college-wide computer application systems as needed within the Information Technology Services department and the College. Primary responsibilities of the position include business application support, systems analysis and design and programming. The analyst performs application development, maintenance, administration of security, information reporting, customer analysis and other duties related to program analysis and development. The Systems Analyst needs to be able to meet with customers on their system needs and have the ability to translate and apply those needs within the ERP system. This position will work with a variety of databases and maintain them to produce a reliable, accurate, and dependable information system for all functions of day-to-day operations. This position functions to support the College s enterprise resource planning (ERP) structures through the development of standalone BI solutions as well as solutions that interface with the College ERP system (Datatel). Supervisory Responsibility: This position does not have any supervisory responsibilities, but will often act as a group leader in order to oversee, steer, and expedite the completion of a project. Essential Duties/Major Accountabilities: A. Relational Database Administration: Responsible for the college-wide integrated database system crucial to the infrastructure of the college enterprise resource system, used by MCC administration, staff, faculty and students. B. Specialized Database Administration: Administer and maintain specialized database systems obtained or created by the college to fill the needs of specific departments or areas. This includes controlling database access and process flow within these systems, creating views, business rules, reports and data imports/exports. C. Application of Analytical Skills: 1. Create feasibility studies from many complex requests taking into consideration the overall influence on the college, limiting conflict and eliminating duplication. 2. Gather all process requirements to determine the scope of diverse projects such as launching complex modules, creating individual processes and creating new databases. 3. Research of projects includes: written documentation, dataflow diagrams, determining impact on current and new processes, equipment capacity and limitations, process time and desired customer results. 4. Test written programs to ensure accuracy, reliability, efficiency, system performance, meets user specifications, integrates well with other systems on campus and their impact on other areas of the college. Implementation of System Design: Construct each segment of the system using information derived from the analysis, adhere to technical and MCC standards and create a secure environment and system. E. System Security Skills: Responsible for establishing and maintaining user accounts, integrating multi-level and record level security for multiple database types and users and coordinating security for new software installation with staff and outside vendors. F. Maintain Data Integrity: Identify data corruption using file management diagnostics, correct corruption and other errors with manual intervention and/or with the application of diagnostic tools. Purge old data to maintain overall system efficiency as required. G. Software Installation/Integration Skills: Coordinate installation of vendor software releases and revisions, evaluate new processes, research enhancements and modifications, insure seamless integration of all installations and communicate the impact of software enhancements to all affected area prior to installing new modules and revisions. H. System Maintenance: Modify all vendor software to accommodate the changing needs of the college due to process changes, technological advancements, irregularities and government required specifications. Create custom programs and communicate with vendor support staff requiring extensive knowledge of vendor systems and the capability to effectively articulate technical issues. I. Leadership Skills: Lead cross-functional teams related to project statuses, processes, specifications, procedures, problem solving and recurring startup changes. Role includes organizing, delegating, facilitating, communicating and the ability to influence and motivate the team. J. Continuous Professional Development: Willingness to attend training on new and existing vendor releases of college software products and to share that knowledge with appropriate colleagues afterward. This also includes the willingness and ability to deliver presentations or lead discussion groups utilizing highly skilled knowledge of vendor software at regional, national and international conferences as approved by supervisor. Provide training to College staff by designing and developing oral presentations, writing documentation and possess the ability to translate technical terminology for the diverse levels of end-user knowledge. K. Development software using combinations of technical methods, including, but not limited to: 1. Data Architecture, Modeling, Warehousing, and ETL concepts 2. Relational & Multi-Dimensional Database design/schemas (i.e., Oracle) 3. Cognos Architecture/Administration, Framework Manager/Transformer 4. Cognos Report Studio, Analysis Studio, and Dashboards 5. ERWIN, SQL, PL/SQL, Stored Procedures, and OLAP/MDX 6. Programming (i.e., Unidata/UniBasic/UniQuery, C/C++, VB) 7. Microsoft Office Suite, SharePoint, Visio 8. Higher Education Applications (i.e., Datatel) 9. Web Technology/Services Other: 1. Support and contribute to College-wide initiatives and contribute to their success. 2. Serve as an advocate for and representative of department interests and position. 3. Create, document and communicate user-friendly, efficient policies, procedures and information. Page 2 of 6

Prepare reports and studies; maintain data, files, etc. needed to document and report activities; and create and maintain organized libraries of information, reference materials, policies and procedures for the College. 5. Identify the need for changes in policies, procedures and processes and take initiative to work with area manager to implement within assigned area of responsibility or make recommendation for change to responsible party. 6. Serve as an advocate for and representative of the College by participating in external groups at a local, state and national level as needed. 7. Maintain positive and productive relationships with external groups who may interface with the College. 8. Provide advice to all College system users in the areas of technology use and trends. 9. Other duties as assigned or required. Accountability Standards for All ITS Staff: As part of the Information Technology Services team, each ITS staff member is responsible for contributing to achievement of the ITS mission, vision and goals; conducting oneself in accordance with the department s Key Performance Expectations; participating in team activities and assignments; and assisting any member of the ITS team when the need arises or is observed, including in the absence of another. 1. Ensure that assigned projects and activities adhere to accepted professional standards. 2. Coordinate work efforts with other appropriate groups, staff, vendors, supervisors, and managers. 3. Conduct basic research, assemble data and information, prepare reports, and complete surveys. 4. Perform or assist in the performance of any task required of any member of the ITS department when necessary due to workload, absences, deadlines, etc. Assist other members of the ITS offices when needed or observed. 5. Ensure that the College is in compliance with the legal, regulatory, contractual, collectively bargained, and procedural requirements related to assigned operations. 6. Create, document and communicate user-friendly, efficient policies and procedures for assigned areas of responsibility. 7. Give presentations to employees and supervisors. 8. Prepare reports and studies; maintain data, files, etc. needed to document and defend the actions of the College related to assigned areas of responsibility; create and maintain organized libraries of information, reference materials, policies and procedures for ITS operations to minimize the transition time required of a new or replacement employee. 9. Generate support for the ITS department by providing high quality customer service. Communicate and provide accurate and timely information and service to the various customers served by and groups who interact with the ITS department to meet customer needs and create a positive impression of the College s ITS department. Promptly resolve questions and problems related to assigned areas raised by either employees or customers. 10. Identify the need for changes in policies and procedures and take initiative to implement within assigned area of responsibility or make recommendation for change to responsible party. 11. Serve as an advocate for and representative of the College s interests and position. Represent, explain, and advocate the College s position when interacting with others. 12. 4 Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 1. Bachelor's degree (or foreign equivalent) in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Business Information Systems or related field of study. 2. Four years of experience in the job offered, or in a related computer programmer analyst and/or engineering position. Professional experience may include working with Cognos programming (Cognos 8 BI and Framework Manager), Business Objects, SQL Reporting Services or other Reporting / Analytic engine across multiple databases. 3. Possess complex analytic judgment and ingenuity: a. Plan and perform difficult work where only general methods may be available. b. The capability to work with highly complicated technical projects and problems requires: i. Exceptional judgment ii. Considerable ingenuity iii. Initiative in dealing with factors not easily evaluated 4. Make decisions carrying a great deal of responsibility for which there is little or no precedent. 5. Experience working independently or without significant direction on a daily basis. 6. Ability to manage multiple priorities and remain highly productive. Additional Preferred Qualifications: 1. Experience acting as a work group leader. 2. Experience with Cognos administration, security, portal, ETL, cubes, and dashboards. 3. Experience with Erwin, Toad, SQL, and PL/SQL. 4. Excellent written and verbal communications skills. Strong communication and people skills and the ability to work with users at all levels, with an emphasis on customer service. 5. Demonstrated interest in professional development and learning new skills, program languages and processes. 6. Demonstrated history of adaptation to new technology. Unique Aspects of Job: 1. This position will be required to learn new programming languages, attend both technical and interpersonal professional development activities and have a strong commitment to the College. 2. It is highly important that the System Analyst have skills to develop relationships and persuade and influence others. 3. Ultimately, the systems maintained by the Analyst will affect: a. The high volume of personnel using MCC data systems and the increasing number of systems and programs results in an increasing quantity of requests and emergencies. 5. The ERP and related systems are heavily used by the College and it is important that this position understand the critical nature of system up time. 6. Occasionally, this position will be required to work weekends or outside of business hours to perform maintenance and/or repairs. Page 4 of 6

5 Physical Requirements: The employee must be able to work at a desk for long periods of time and operate a computer workstation and telephone. Due to the heavy customer service aspect of this position, it is necessary to communicate effectively both in person and over the telephone with a large variety of people each day. The employee, on occasion, must be able to lift and carry, at the minimum, a 10 pound item. Hours/Schedule: 52 Weeks, 40-hours per week, Monday through Friday. May be required to work a variable schedule/varying hours to meet operational needs. Work hours will be determined by the Director of Enterprise Services. Page 5 of 6
