3 Working together to achieve your dream career 3 Why do an apprenticeship? An apprenticeship gives you the best of both worlds: the chance to work towards a nationally-recognised qualification and develop your career at the same time. You ll be earning a wage for doing a real full-time job, learning real skills in a real work environment. Who can do it? To start an apprenticeship you need to be at least 16 years old and have legally left school. 1 Apprenticeships suit young people wanting to get a foot on the career ladder; they also enable established employees to achieve formal recognition for their knowledge and skills, supporting career progression. How do they work? Assessment mostly takes place in the workplace. For 20% of the time, you ll be doing off-the-job training such as shadowing a colleague or enhancing your skills at college. Afterwards, you could progress to an advanced apprenticeship or to a degree-level course, such as a degree or higher apprenticeship. Why choose B&FC? B&FC is an Ofsted Outstanding college and the highest performing college for student success in England for the third year running. 2 We have an excellent reputation for delivering high quality apprenticeships and offer more than 100 apprenticeships across 18 different career areas. Our expert tutors and assessors all benefit from relevant industry experience and will support you through your own personalised learning programme. You need to be in employment before you can start but through our vacancy matching service and strong employer relationships we can support you to find your ideal role. The staff at B&FC are excellent and the teaching is really in line with industry practice. I have enjoyed my time at College - as well as the practical experience and help I have been given by my employer. Shaun Lamb, 23, an apprentice plumber from B&FC, who was shortlisted for national Apprentice of the Year by the Association of Colleges. 1 An apprentice cannot start an apprenticeship until after the last Friday in June of the academic year in which they have their 16th birthday. 2 Education and Skills Funding Agency National Achievement Rate Tables (NARTs) of large general further education colleges published April 2015, May 2016 and June 2017

7 Working together to achieve your dream career 7 A personalised programme As an apprentice, you will be working full-time for an employer, developing skills in your chosen occupation. The great thing about a B&FC apprenticeship is that it s personalised to you. Your apprenticeship is made up of several different elements and each one reflects your individual abilities and career goals. Off-the-job training Developing your skills at work is called on-the-job training. However, 20% of your apprenticeship (equal to one full day a week) will be off-the-job This might include regularly or occasionally attending College, completing tasks outside of your usual day-to-day job, online learning, coaching, shadowing and training for your job. Lots of support When you start, we will allocate you a skills coach, who will visit you at least once a month to guide and support you through your programme and help you to plan for your future. We will also provide you with specialist support for your English and maths and for any additional needs that you make us aware of. There are just six in my class so it s a really personal learning experience. The tutors are great too. I like the welding side of things, fixing and putting together broken parts. The Advanced Technology Centre has amazing equipment for us to work with. Kyle Houghton, a former pupil of Highfield Leadership Academy, is enjoying an Engineering Apprenticeship with B&FC.
