General Information Secretariat of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) IRENA Innovation and Technology Centre (IITC) Junior Professional Officer (JPO) Position Title: Associate Programme Officer REmap Sector of Assignment: IRENA Innovation and Technology Centre (IITC) Organization/Office: Renewable Energy Roadmaps (Remap) Duty Station: Bonn, Germany Duration: 1 year with possible extension for another year II. Background The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) is an inter-governmental organisation mandated with the widespread and increased adoption and sustainable use of all forms of renewable energy. At present, IRENA has 159 Members (158 States and the European Union) and 24 States in the process of accession. IRENA supports countries in their transition to a sustainable energy future, and serves as the principal platform for international cooperation, a centre of excellence, and a repository of policy, technology, resource and financial knowledge on renewable energy. The Agency implements its mandate with the view to sustainable development, increased energy security and lowcarbon economic growth and prosperity. The IRENA Innovation and Technology Centre (IITC) is responsible for the provision of the means to accelerate renewable energy technology uptake, considering national conditions of resource endowment, as well as social and economic frameworks. In accordance with the IRENA Statute, activities in this field include: analysis of renewable energy technology policies; promotion of innovation; dissemination of information and increased awareness; technology overview and assessment of success-failure factors; improved pertinent knowledge and technology transfer; joint research, development and demonstration; and provision of information about the development and deployment of national and international technical standards in relation to renewable energy. Within its work programme activities the IRENA s Renewable Energy Roadmaps programme (REmap) determines the potential for countries, regions and the world to scale up renewables. REmap assesses renewable energy potential assembled from the bottom-up, starting with country analyses done in collaboration with country experts, and then aggregating these results to arrive at a global picture. The roadmap focuses not just on renewable power technologies, but also technology options in heating, cooling and transport, as well synergies between renewable and energy efficiency. REmap focuses on possible technology pathways and assesses numerous other metrics, including: technology, sector and system costs; investment needs; externalities relating to air pollution and climate; CO2 emissions; and economic indicators such as employment and economic growth. Based on these country driven results, REmap provides insights to policy and decision makers for areas in which action is needed. The REmap programme includes a wide range of knowledge products, reports, datasets and documents.

2 The Associate Programme Officer - REmap will work under the overall guidance of the senior programme officer for REmap at IITC. The incumbent will be provided guidance through individual meetings with the supervisor, team meetings and through periodic performance reviews and appraisals in accordance with the established policies and procedures of IRENA. III. Duties, Responsibilities and Output Expectations The Associate Programme Officer - REmap will be assigned the following duties: Provide support in matters related to REmap inputs to the G20 group under the Japan presidency; Provide analytical support with the development of a technical paper on hydrogen as an energy carrier and how hydrogen can be included in the decarbonization scenarios of REmap; Provide analytical support with the analysis of energy use projections of countries, sectors, and renewable energy technology, cost and performance, in particular in the context of Remap analysis of G20 countries; Assist with the write-up of country results based on research and analysis; draw conclusions for policy makers; and contribute to the preparation of the global and regional REmap policy and technology roadmap; Assist with the management of the REmap network, including: keeping records of country focal points and experts; dealing with requests for information; organizing workshops; facilitating communications with network members; contributing to the country dialogue and communications; sending requests for data, screening the data received and inputting the data into the IRENA REmap analysis framework; Assist with the preparation of reports and brochures for publication including the creation of templates for charts and tables, liaising with the publication and communications teams, as well as the design and printing companies; Prepare summaries, information sheets, PowerPoint presentations, and interact with relevant stakeholders as required; Perform other tasks as required. IV. Qualifications Education: Advanced University degree (Master s degree or equivalent) in the field of engineering, energy and/or economics. A first university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Work experience: At least two years of progressively responsible experience in any of the following fields: energy systems analysis, energy technology assessment, energy balances, energy systems planning, decarbonization analysis in the context of energy systems. Languages: Excellent command of both written and spoken English is essential. Knowledge of another official language of the United Nations is an advantage.

Specifically, he/she will have acquired expertise and detailed knowledge in participating in intergovernmental processes, interacting with Members, developing energy analysis, assessing energy technology options and applying cross-sectoral methodologies and analysis.

The Agency implements its mandate with the view to sustainable development, increased energy security and lowcarbon economic growth and prosperity. The Knowledge, Policy and Finance Centre (KPFC) focuses on collecting data, developing knowledge platforms and conducting analysis to support the creation of enabling environments for investment and growth in renewables. The IRENA Statistics Unit contributes to this effort through the provision of reliable and timely renewable energy statistics, an essential component of informed energy planning and decision making. Key activities include the collection and analysis of data from countries using the IRENA Renewable Energy Statistics Questionnaire, desk research and other data sources such as industry associations. The unit is also engaged in data dissemination through the IRENA website and statistical publications, the development and dissemination of methodological guidance on renewable energy statistics and capacity building in statistics through workshops, seminars and daily communications with data providers and other stakeholders. The Associate Programme Officer Renewable Energy Statistics will work under the overall guidance of the Director of the Knowledge, Policy and Finance Centre and the immediate supervision of the Chief Statistician. The incumbent will be provided guidance through individual meetings with the supervisor, team meetings and through periodic performance reviews and appraisals in accordance with the established policies and procedures of IRENA. III. Duties, Responsibilities and Output Expectations The Associate Programme Officer will be assigned the following duties, with an emphasis on collecting data for the Asia region: Collection, checking and compilation of renewable energy statistics, including designing procedures and instruments for data collection, processing, storage and dissemination; Dissemination of data though publications, webpages, databases and other relevant mechanisms, as well as promotion of IRENA s statistics in the media and at events; Participation in the development or revision of standards on statistical concepts, definitions and classifications by performing methodological research;

6 Preparation of technical documents and presentations about renewable energy statistics for international, intergovernmental and expert group meetings and assistance with drafting other reports (by providing data and analysis, as required); Organisation and participation in seminars, working groups and expert meetings as a technical resource person, including training events in renewable energy statistics; Research and analysis of renewable energy statistics to fill gaps in datasets and add-value to the statistics collected by IRENA; Performing other tasks as required. IV. Qualifications Education: Advanced University degree (Master degree or equivalent) in mathematics, statistics, economics or other fields with a strong emphasis on numerical analysis. A first university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Work experience: A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in the collection and analysis of data, preferably related to the energy sector. Languages: Excellent command of both written and spoken English is essential. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage. Other skills: Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets and presentation software, information and data-management software. V. Required competencies Professionalism: Knowledge and understanding of theories, concepts and approaches relevant to particular sector, functional area or other specialized field. Ability to identify issues, analyze and participate in the resolution of problems. Conceptual analytical and evaluative skills to conduct independent research and analysis, including familiarity with and experience in the use of various research sources, i.e. electronic sources on the internet, intranet and other databases. Ability to apply judgment in the context of assignments given, plan own work and manage conflicting priorities. Conscientiousness and efficiency in meeting commitments, observation of deadlines and achieving of results. Communication: Good oral skills and proven drafting ability. Ability to develop contacts, foster collaboration with external stakeholders, advocate for viewpoints and participate actively in internal as well as external debates and negotiations. Within its work programme activities, the Power Sector Transformation team have a strong focus on dealing with the challenges of integrating large shares of solar and wind into power systems originally designed for large scale thermal power plants. One of the solutions currently being analysed by IRENA to integrate larger shares of solar and wind is to couple the power sector with other energy sectors, also known as sector coupling (e.g., power to hydrogen). Additionally, IRENA recently published the report Hydrogen from Renewable power: technology outlook for the energy transition and will expand this work by further analysing the cost structure and options for power to hydrogen to compete with fossil fuels at scale, as well as the potential for hydrogen production to provide flexibility to the power system at all time scales, from ancillary services provision to seasonal storage. The Associate Programme Officer will work under the overall guidance of the Director of the IRENA Innovation and Technology Centre and the immediate supervision of the Analyst, Power Sector Transformation Strategies. The incumbent will be provided guidance through individual meetings with the supervisor, team meetings and through periodic performance reviews and appraisals in accordance with the established policies and procedures of IRENA. III. Duties, Responsibilities and Output Expectations

9 The Associate Programme Officer will be assigned the following duties: Support the development and implementation of IRENA s work on hydrogen from renewable power Assist in technological and research work related to the flexibility of power to hydrogen solutions Collect data and conduct research in order to build a technology outlook on electrolysers by focusing on their cost, performance and potential flexibility. Assist in the data collection for the analysis of the potential of hydrogen production and flexibility for a set of selected case studies. Provide insights and support on the case of hydrogen for Japan: import opportunities, on-site production implications, hydrogen consumption in industry, shipping and storage of hydrogen, etc. Support development of work plans, preparation of contracts and agreements with other institutions, organizations, and individuals and support day-to-day operations of the work programme activities; Assist in the organization of consultative workshops and technical meetings ensuring effective participation of key stakeholders. Performing other tasks as required. IV. Qualifications Education: Advanced University degree (Master s degree or equivalent) in engineering, physics, chemistry or related disciplines. A first university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Work experience: A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in the energy sector, with a good demonstrated level of understanding of the hydrogen value chain, from production to consumption, and a good understanding of the power sector. Languages: Excellent command of both written and spoken English is essential. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage. V.
