Shareholders - Develop a habit of thinking about how you would explain any decision you are making for the business to a shareholder, including how you would calculate and explain the return on investment 13

Choose one or more HR certifications or executive education offerings that is right for you at the right time 3. Identify self-directed learning in the form of TedTalks, Coursera (online courses), articles by thought leaders in business and HR, etc. 4. Achieve and enjoy mastery of the key subject matter of your role by sharing your learning with others and soliciting their input and advice. And if you really want to be interesting to others, find something you are passionate about that has nothing to do with your day job and learn all about it 16

Focus on building basic competencies throughout each role, followed by differentiating competencies as you strive towards mastery 1. Basic competencies include: driving results, making decisions, demonstrating effective judgment, managing time and prioritizing work 2. Differentiating competencies include: courageous leadership, risk-taking, making data driven decisions, influencing and leveraging resources effectively 18

Achievement What have you really achieved? (not what you have been responsible for) 5. Aspiration - What do you aspire to be? And why? And GRIT (fortitude, resiliency, or perseverance) enhances each and serves as the glue that holds them all together! 20

Does your board support your strengths while addressing your fatal flaws or areas that need improvement? 3. Ensure your board reflects areas outside your profession and industry, as well as diversity of gender, ethnicity, religion, age, etc. 4. Let these individuals know what role you d like them to play and have clear goals in mind to ensure you re making the best use of their time 23

Deliberately plan and integrate your time around what is important to you 3. Keep the few extra-curricular activities that most positively impact your overall well-being and perspective and that bring you joy 4. Set the example for living a healthy lifestyle and not just because HR typically has responsibility for the benefits plan 5. Share that one thing with your co-workers and leader 25

How do you bridge your well-being, business acumen, knowledge and career planning activities? And avoid conflict? Can you tweak challenges and opportunities in front of you to align with your purpose? Can your purpose include helping others find and achieve theirs? 31
