1 Thursday, April 5, :30 10 AM Opening General Session After a 5-year hiatus, the conference, formerly known as the Labor Management Initiative, returns with a new name, expanded resources, lessons from participating union and department partnerships, and networking opportunities to build positive and productive relationships. Fire Chief Eric Tade and Local President Scott Simpson, will welcome everyone to Denver, followed by IAFC President, Tom Jenkins and IAFF General President, Harold Schaitberger who will open the Labor Management Alliance Conference and discuss what you can expect from your time at the conference. The goal is to provide labor and management partners the tools to create a program that will continue to function effectively as the leadership may change. Learn how to establish a plan for effective communications, agenda(s) for meetings, and ideal frequency of meetings. You will also come away with a better understanding of the importance of recruiting the right people for each meeting. 3 8:30 AM 10:00 AM Practical Employee Relations for Leaders in Fire Service In this two-day highly interactive and entertaining program specifically designed for leaders in fire service, an extensive array of employee relations scenarios are covered. Leaders gain skill and increased confidence in handling employee relations situations that, while difficult and uncomfortable, must be addressed carefully to prevent legal problems. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly: Rewards and Challenges to Labor-Management Relationships Every relationship has its ups and downs. It is no different for professional and public relationships. Instructors will share the benefits of successful LM relationships, the potential challenges that may come up, and how others have overcome these barriers. Ken Block, Chief, Edmonton (Alberta) Fire ; Barbara Seller, Partnership Education Program Instructor, International Association of Fire Fighters Labor Management Committee: Your Guide to Success On a daily basis, fire departments are confronted with a variety of issues that require a strong working relationship between labor and management to achieve success together. The best departments have the tools in place to work through those issues successfully even if they don t always agree. This workshop will address best practices and how labor - management committees can create a team culture, build trust over time and develop consistent involvement. However, there are several opportunities for labor and management to achieve success in non-collective bargaining environments. This workshop will highlight where labor and management cooperation was utilized successfully to address issues in a location where there is no ability to collectively bargain a contractual agreement. 4 10:20 AM - 11:50 AM Title VII and the Civil Rights Act This workshop will cover potential sex, race, age, disability and other discrimination claims within the fire service, including issues involving hiring and promotions and recent legal developments. The discussion will include best practices, local union officer and management responsibilities, contract language and duty of fair representation issues. The workshop will also address EEOC claims and procedures and will highlight several recent case studies specifically related to the fire service.
