3 SafeAbility Safe and Able to Work November 1st, 2005 Welcome to SafeAbility Safe and Able to Work, a health and safety awareness program for persons with disabilities. This program has been developed together with the disabled community to help raise health and safety awareness for persons with disabilities and injured workers and help them get ready to go to work. The SafeAbility program is the result of much coordination and effort by many agencies and people. This is an excellent example of communities working together to prevent injuries and illnesses. The Participant Guide includes much of the information you will need as you prepare for work. You will learn about workplace hazards and what you can do to work with your employer and supervisor to prevent injuries and illnesses. You will also learn about asking questions to make sure you have the information you need to work safely. We encourage all of those who participate in SafeAbility to provide feedback and suggestions so that we can continue to improve and strengthen the networks and materials used to deliver the health and safety message. 5 About SafeAbility The SafeAbility Safe and Able to Work program has been developed to help raise awareness about health and safety in the workplace and to help persons with a disability get ready to go to work. This Participant Guide provides information that a worker with a disability needs to know before they start a new job. The Participant Guide contains information and activities about health and safety. Throughout the guide there are question boxes and references to the Job Notebook. Both these tools help the participant prepare to ask their employer or supervisor about their job, specifically their health and safety needs. There are 3 modules in the program: Module 1 Why health and safety is important Module 2 Working Safely Module 3 Ready for work SafeAbility will help the participant to: 1. understand the roles and responsibilities of the workplace parties: workers, supervisors and employers 2. learn to identify hazards that may cause an injury or illness, 3. learn to ask questions about health and safety issues, 4. get ready to go to work. Two concepts run throughout the entire program: 1. Be prepared to ask questions Throughout the Participant Guide are text boxes with questions for the participant to ask. 2. Know and be prepared to handle your individual health and safety needs. The program provides opportunities to discuss what the participant s individual needs might be. Learn how to ask questions to discuss their needs with their employer or supervisor. Program Information 5

6 Additional Resources provided for the participant: Two (2) resources support the Participant Guide: My Job Notebook Wallet card Job Notebook The My Job Notebook has been designed to help the participant identify and record their individual information and to help prepare them to communicate with their employer and co-workers. The participants will see this graphic throughout the program where the Job Notebook provides an opportunity to write in information. The participants are asked to complete it as much as they can while going through the program. The participants can use the Job Notebook during their first days on the job and ask questions to fill in any gaps. They can use the booklet as a prompt when speaking with their employer about health and safety in their workplace. Wallet Card Ready for Work? This wallet card contains information on: rights as a worker, tips for working safely. HS101.ca Health and Safety 101 ( website that can assist you to review the information found in SafeAbility. This is an interactive website that allows you to review the information as many times as you wish to. HS101.ca Look for this symbol. It will tell you what module on the website has more information on the topic. SafeAbility is meant to help the participant get ready for work. It is not a replacement for specific workplace orientation and other hazard awareness training that the employer must provide under the Occupational Health & Safety Act (OHSA). Program Information 6

8 Sample page - Module 1 Knowing your Responsibilities Your employer, your supervisor and you all have responsibilities when it comes to keeping you healthy and safe at work. Who they are EMPLOYER is a person who employs one or more workers. In other words, he or she runs the business and pays your salary. Take every precaution reasonable in the protection of the worker. SUPERVISOR is a person who has authority over any worker or charge over a workplace. In other words, any person who can direct you on how or when to do your job. WORKER is a person who is paid to perform work or supply services. As a worker, you have to do your part too. Legal Responsibilities Establish a health and safety policy and program Provide required training Provide the information, instruction and supervision you need to do your job safely Make sure you have necessary safety equipment Provide information on hazards in the workplace Make sure the machines and equipment are in good working order Under the law, your employer must also display important information where everyone can see it: Health and safety policy JHSC members names and locations The Occupational Health and Safety Act In Case of Injury at Work poster Make sure you follow the law and the company s safety rules Tell you about any job hazards or dangers Make sure you use safety equipment properly A good supervisor should look after workers. The supervisor should: Work with or near the workers Be available to answer workers questions Provide feedback on how the job is being done Provide hands-on training until the work can be done correctly, confidently and safely by the worker Monitor the job to make sure it is being done safely and with the right safety equipment. 9 Sample page - Why is Health and Safety Important? Activity 1 Who does what? Look at the following list of activities the employer, supervisor or worker are responsible for in the workplace. Identify who is responsible for each activity. Write the answer in the column beside the duty. E = Employer S = Supervisor W = Worker E,S and W Wear required personal protective equipment or clothing. Make sure that workers follow the health & safety rules. Follow the company rules and obey the law. Make sure workers are wearing their personal protective equipment. Do not participate horseplay in the workplace. Do everything they can, within reason, to protect workers. Tell workers about hazards that relate to their job. Not allow underage workers to work in the workplace. Establish a health and safety policy and program. Make sure workers follow the law and the workplace s safety rules. Use machines and equipment safely. Provide required training. Provide information, instruction and supervision needed to do the job safely. Make sure the equipment and machines are in good working order. Statistics have been provided to indicate the magnitude of health and safety injuries and fatalities. Review the possibilities about why costs are so high. Discuss why injuries happen. Discuss costs to workers, employers, co-workers and community. It is important that the participants understand that in Ontario there are laws (legislation) to protect their health and safety. Introduce the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and the roles and responsibilities (employer, supervisor, worker and joint health and safety committee). 11 Activity Sheet (AS) These sheets contain the answers to the activities found within the modules of the program. The header section indicates whether it is the activity answer or an alternative activity. Example Activity 6 is a question and answer. An alternative activity, a word search puzzle has been provided. A blank copy of the activity follows the answer page, an activity blank can also be found on the CD-ROM. Alternative activities provide variations or suggestions on different ways to do the activity. They follow the order of the Detailed Lesson Plans. The overheads can shown by the Facilitator either by 1) projected onto a screen or whiteboard, or 2) printed and posted on the walls. Occupational Health & Safety Act (OHSA) Reference card Reference Sheet (RS) Internal Responsibility System (IRS) The Internal Responsibility System (IRS) is a health and safety philosophy based on the principle that every individual in the workplace is responsible for health and safety. That includes the CEO, executives, management and workers. The success of the IRS is dependent on the effective partnership between the workplace parties to create a safe and healthy workplace. Workplace parties is a term that refers to the persons who are considered an Employer, Supervisor, worker and contractor or subcontractor. Basically it refers to all persons who enter a workplace for whatever reason. These sheets provide detailed information on the health and safety information contained in the program. They can be used by the Facilitator to learn more about the topic.
