Occasionally a Mentor can make a mistake regarding a choice of a movie, but it is advisable to discuss this with the guardian. 8. Inform the guardian and Big Brothers Big Sisters Staff about the activities planned and other people who may be involved. Confirm times for the mentee to be picked up and returned. 9. Be responsible for your Mentee s safety and well being. 10. There are no secrets. 11. Respect the guardian s wishes if there are any activities they feel uncomfortable with. 12. Transportation of other individuals is not expected.

3 Volunteer, Guardian, Mentee- Shared Responsibilities 1. The 1:1 relationship in a match is very important. The Mentor is advised generally not to include other people in activities. The match was made to meet this mentee s needs. 2. The Mentor is not encouraged to become involved with the family of the mentee and is advised not to spend time at the Mentee s home; this will reduce the chance of conflict with other family members. This is important if the mentor is to remain a special friend to the mentee. However, the mentee may get to know the mentor s family and spend time with the family from time to time. 3. Expenses incurred during outings should be minimal and shared where possible. This will depend on individual financial situations. 4. Please keep the agency informed of any change of address, telephone, or living situation that may affect the match. 5. No administration of medication is allowed without a prior written consent and release form signed by the guardian and appropriate training of the volunteer is obtained from a qualified medical professional. 6. Be flexible and consider each other s schedules when planning match activities. Keep the lines of communication open. 7. Maintain regular contact with myself.
