1 CITY OF REDLANDS CEMETERY SUPERINTENDENT DEFINITION Under direction, to plan, assign, supervise, coordinate, and participate in the maintenance, development, and operation of the City s cemetery; and to provide technical staff assistance. SUPERVISION EXERCISED Exercises direct supervision over assigned staff. EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES Supervise cemetery caretakers in the landscaping and groundskeeping of cemetery lands; supervise and prioritize the maintenance, repair, and upkeep of buildings and structures. Establish goals, objectives, schedules, and methods for the operation and maintenance of the City cemetery; implement and monitor policies and procedures. Serve as main City cemetery liaison with funeral directors by clarifying service arrangements, coordinating and participating in the planning of services, and providing additional assistance as needed. Supervise and participate in the preparation of grounds for services, including the digging of graves and placement of chairs. Participate in budget preparation and administration; prepare cost estimates and recommend purchases of equipment and supplies; monitor and control budget accounts. Participate in the selling of grave sites, mausoleum crypts, and niches; execute contracts. Supervise and participate in locating gravesite boundaries and laying out burial preparations for graves, markets, and related items. Schedule burial services; attend services when possible to coordinate the flow of traffic and monitor the activities during the service. Receive burial permits from funeral directors as required by law; verify accurate information. Supervise the collection of payments and the preparation of financial records and reports. EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES Provide recommendations for planning and supervising the construction of new cemetery development.

2 Maintain inventory of supplies; prepare requisitions for materials and supplies. Supervise and participate in minor equipment repair work; coordinate major repair work with the City shop. Supervise, train, and evaluate assigned personnel. Perform duties of Caretaker as required. OTHER JOB RELATED DUTIES Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned. JOB RELATED AND ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: Operational characteristics, services and activities of a cemetery program. Practices, methods, equipment, tools, and materials used in cemetery operations and horticulture. Occupational hazards and standard safety practices necessary in the area of cemetery and grounds maintenance. Sprinkler systems and methods of repair. Uses of fertilizers and insecticides. Principles of budget preparation and control. Principles of supervision, training and performance evaluation. Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes and regulations. Modern office practices, methods, and computer equipment. Knowledge of: Principles and procedures of records keeping and reporting. Safe driving principles and practices. Skill to: Operate modern office equipment including computer equipment.

3 Operate and maintain variety of equipment, machinery, and tools used in cemetery and grounds maintenance. Operate a motor vehicle safely. Ability to: Supervise, plan, and coordinate the efficient operation and maintenance of cemetery grounds and facilities. Lay out grave spaces, markers, and related items. Manage and coordinate the work of maintenance personnel. Select, supervise, train and evaluate staff. Analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions and implement recommendations in support of goals. Interpret and apply Federal, State, and local policies, procedures, laws, and regulations. Prepare and maintain accurate and complete records. Prepare clear and concise reports. Prepare and administer budgets. Respond to requests and inquiries from the general public. Exercise tact, diplomacy, and compassion in dealing with bereaved families, funeral directors, and clergy. Ability to: Exercise good judgment, flexibility, creativity, and sensitivity in response to changing situations and needs. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Experience and Training Guidelines: Any combination equivalent to experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:

4 Experience: Three years of increasingly responsible experience in cemetery operations, including one year of supervisory experience. Training: Equivalent to a high school diploma. License or Certificate: Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid driver's license. Special Requirements: Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment: Ability to work in a standard office environment; ability to travel to different sites and locations.
