1 The whole is greater than the sum of its parts is an often-referenced quote attributed to Greek philosopher Aristotle. Today, that timeless saying has broad applicability to the field of healthcare, where success is defined by the health and wellness of the people we serve. For leaders, positive patient outcomes depend not only on the quality of care delivered by one physician or a single hospital, but also on the synergy of individuals and organizations working together to share best practices and influence the field. In an environment that presents us with a significant opportunity to reimagine the ways we collaborate and innovate to improve healthcare, partnerships will be key to success. Achieving synergy in the healthcare field will require a bold plan that calls on leaders to find fresh pathways to educate, engage and inspire all leaders to advance health. As the professional home for healthcare leaders, ACHE is committed to advancing health through leadership by being a catalyst for the field, a connector across the leadership community and a trusted partner to the individuals and organizations that comprise the field of healthcare management. A Catalyst for the Field of Healthcare Management ACHE is mining the best of the healthcare field to solve not only today s problems but also those we will encounter tomorrow. Through the power of partnerships, together, we will find new ways to tackle our biggest challenges. A key priority for leaders is keeping those who entrust their care to us safe. Preventable medical errors is the third leading cause of death in the United States, according to a 2016 study by Johns Hopkins Medicine. Through our partnerships clinical and nonclinical leaders can move the needle closer to the ultimate goal of zero harm. For instance, our work with the IHI/NPSF s Lucian Leape Institute guides healthcare leaders through creating and sustaining a culture of safety. This collaboration, begun in 2016, produced the resource Leading a Culture of Safety: A Blueprint for Success. Now we are asking all healthcare leaders to take a pledge to commit to a culture of safety, assess their organization s safety measures and implement a few steps that will advance their organization s journey toward safety. The pledge, assessment and other resources are available on the Leading for Safety website, ache.org/safety. To advance the patient safety agenda, ACHE and 24 other associations, key health systems and organizations, including the IHI/NPSF, joined together to form the National Steering Committee for Patient Safety. The goal of the committee is to begin work on a national strategy for reducing harm in the delivery of healthcare. Members of the committee will work together to create a National Action Plan using a public health framework based on increased collaboration among key stakeholders. To increase our educational offerings around creating a culture of safety, ACHE offered 20 patient safety educational sessions at the 2018 Congress on Healthcare Leadership and plans to offer an education track at the 2019 Congress that will enable attendees to optimize the number of patient safety sessions they attend throughout the week. Additionally, two of our two-day seminars and one boot camp offered at Congress focus on patient safety, and our new three-part Leading for Safety webinar series highlights the six domains identified as critical for success in the blueprint. Creating a culture of safety begins with senior leadership, but upholding that culture is the responsibility of every individual within an organization. Individuals who take the pledge raise the level of quality expected of themselves through education and collaboration, and each organization that commits to safety strengthens the healthcare profession s resolve to elevate its standards of safety. By providing our members with actionable tools to chart the progress of their own work and their organizations, leaders are poised to create a movement across the field of healthcare leadership to change the culture of safety within organizations nationwide.

2 A Connector Across the Leadership Community At our core, ACHE connects leaders across personal and professional dimensions, forming communities and sharing best practices that unite those like and unlike us. We can improve the outcomes of health through educational and networking opportunities, and sharing perspectives and insights across the rich array of interprofessional leaders. For clinical professionals moving into leadership roles, ACHE is working to find relevant pathways that will transform leaders by offering programs and services that will help them succeed on this journey. ACHE recently entered into a partnership with the American Society for Anesthesiologists. Through this alliance, we will offer an array of programs and services matched to the career aspirations of ASA members. More importantly, this partnership will expand ACHE s learning network and community through joint networking and educational events with the ASA, such as the ASA Practice Management Conference, a gathering of leaders in the anesthesiology field. Although our core educational programs provide physician leaders the opportunity to earn CME credits, networking opportunities hold the power to strengthen relationships with clinical and nonclinical leaders that can forge new ways of thinking. Strong partnerships also exist to advance equity in healthcare and increasing diverse representation to cultivate an inclusive community among healthcare leaders. During the 2018 Congress, ACHE, the National Association of Latino Healthcare Executives, the National Association of Health Services Executives which celebrated its 50th anniversary this year the Institute for Diversity and Health Equity and our two member forums for executives from the Asian and LGBT communities co-hosted the inaugural Better Together Joint Diversity and Inclusion Reception. With more than 400 in attendance, this event provided attendees with an opportunity to personally demonstrate their commitment to advocating for inclusion and embracing the differences of those with whom we work and the communities we serve. ACHE and our partners are developing the next Better Together initiative to continue assisting healthcare organizations in building cultures that are more inclusive for diverse executives. ACHE also partners with the Institute to co-promote its Summer Enrichment Program, which grows and strengthens the pipeline for diverse leaders and provides host sites with early access to the best and brightest talent from across the country, benefitting individuals, organizations and the field. Since the organizations began co-promoting the program two years ago, ACHE and the Institute have increased the number of graduate students and host sites participating in the program and have expanded the types of participating organizations to include nonhospital host sites such as a hospital association and an insurance company. Our partnership with donors provides further evidence of what we can do together. We thank our donors for helping leaders advance through the Fund for Healthcare Leadership. The Fund s member-driven support provides scholarships to ACHE members seeking resources to acquire the skills and training needed to lead effectively today and into the future. Contributions to the Fund continue to provide leadership development opportunities to the next generation of healthcare leaders through our flagship diversity and inclusion initiative, the Thomas C. Dolan Executive Diversity Program, which has supported 30 scholars to date. Across settings and disciplines, these opportunities are critically important to provide leaders with the necessary skills to navigate through today s uncertainty. Preparing the next generation of leaders will be key to our future. To achieve this goal, our partnerships with academia are crucial.

3 ACHE is committed to supporting academic healthcare management programs that nurture and teach the future leaders of our profession through our Higher Education Network. We support academic programs that join the network by offering free digital access to our publications, reduced fees to attend Congress and other resources to help program directors provide on-campus value to their students. ACHE s Regents support our 275 HEN partners through on-campus programs and events that integrate real-world perspectives from experienced healthcare professionals into classroom teachings. Programs are providing more ways to learn in an interprofessional environment, including offering students earning master s degrees in health administration and business administration the opportunity to round in the hospital with physician and nursing students, and offering combined MD/MHA and MD/ MBA programs. As one of four organizations that founded the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education, ACHE has provided CAHME with valuable leadership since As CAHME celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, ACHE members continue to hold leadership positions with CAHME, while many of our members serve as site visitors, providing valuable advice and guidance to program faculties. ACHE also has maintained a long-standing partnership with the Association of University Programs in Health Administration celebrating its 70th anniversary this year including a cooperative publishing agreement between AUPHA and our publishing division, Health Administration Press. These two groups have collaborated for more than 25 years to develop high-quality content and teaching resources for graduate and undergraduate classrooms. As market leaders in the field, HAP and AUPHA reach academic programs across the country programs that are developing the future leaders for our profession. Over the next year, you can expect to have an improved website experience and more user-friendly resources, such as the ACHE 365 app, which will enable leaders to tap into our solutions anytime, anywhere. The power of partnerships is perhaps best reflected through the work of ACHE s 78 chapters and the volunteers who provide resources and networking to our members close to home. We recognize chapters that deliver high-quality services to ACHE members at the local level through our Chapter Management and Awards Program. In 2017, we recognized 37 chapters for their exceptional efforts, including one that won the Award for Chapter Excellence: Utah Healthcare Executives. This award recognizes chapters that have met three of the four performance standards for four consecutive years. You can view the full list of 2017 award recipients by visiting ache.org/ Chapters/ChapterAwards2017.pdf. Strengthening our partnership with chapters is a strategic priority for ACHE. Our recent efforts to increase support to chapters have included developing new and fresh topics and formats for education, and exploring flexibility in how that education is offered. For example, ACHE recently developed four new Face-to-Face chapter panel discussion templates based on the six domains in Leading a Culture of Safety: A Blueprint for Success to foster conversations at the local level about improving safety, as well as a template on the opioid crisis and one about behavioral health. Providing new resources to assist chapters with recruitment and retention and expanding local Face-to-Face Education opportunities for learners in geographically remote areas are but a few of our recent steps forward. We welcome future chapter improvement opportunities to ensure members have great experiences with ACHE nationally and locally.
