About Upstream: Upstream is a movement to create a healthy society through evidence-based and people-centred ideas. We do that by prioritizing health as a goal of all political decisions, and by popularizing knowledge about the social determinants of health- the building blocks for the health of Canadians. It is widely accepted by experts in academia, medicine, and public policy that factors such as income, housing, education, and early childhood development are the primary determinants of our well-being. However, this knowledge is not yet being used to frame discourse and demand amongst the Canadian public. Upstream seeks to bridge that gap, bringing a new frame to the collective conversation about what we want as a society and what actions we need to take to get there. By making knowledge about the social determinants of health accessible and attractive to a public audience, Upstream brings this frame to the public dialogue. Upstream has three organizational branches that work together to achieve our vision: - The Think Tank gathers the best evidence to inform our collective decisions - The Story Shop translates this information through communication techniques specifically designed to reach a public audience - The Upstream Community of volunteers and partner organizations amplify these messages, make them relevant to individual communities, and mobilize for nation-wide awareness and action campaigns
