1 Job description Job Title Branch Business Group Reporting to Location Preservation and Collection Manager KIRT Archives Project Manager Archives New Zealand Mulgrave Street Salary Range $65,969 $89,252 Purpose The Preservation and Collection Manager will develop, process, store, and document the Constitution Room collection to the best of international standards. They will ensure that the taonga and information about them is accessible to content developers and users while ensuring the long-term safety of the collection. The Preservation and Collection Manager is an important adjunct to the curatorial research and the special design components of the exhibition development process. Key Tasks Preservation Document the preservation strategy for each collection item. Manage the handling, mounting, casing and installation requirements. Liaise with design team to ensure preservation standards are adhered to and taonga is managed using the highest standards of care, materials, and cultural sensitivity. Train/brief and supervise suppliers, internal, and external teams on the safe handling, movement, display and storage of collection items. Mitigate the likelihood of loss, deterioration, or damage to, any collection item in transit, storage or on display. Lead the collection and transportation process for all taonga at a level satisfactory to Archives New Zealand s policies and procedures. Lead the re-housing design process of the exhibition collection. In consultation with National Library and Archives teams, create an operational document that details the memorandum of understanding between Archives New Zealand and the National Library for sustainable displaying and business as usual maintenance. Collection management Collaborate with the curatorial team to identify taonga/artefacts suitable for long-term display in the exhibition. Manage condition reporting. Contribute as appropriate with the curatorial and writing team to ensure correct labelling. Participate in exhibition development and implementation as required. Oversee the imaging process of the collection items in the exhibition for archival, research and promotional purposes. V1.2 March

2 Comply with the Public Records Act 2005 and the Protected Objects Act Participate in the development of Scholarship in the area of conservation, preservation and Mātauranga Māori. Loans Negotiate and co-ordinate loans in accordance with appropriate policy and procedure, and in a consistent and tactful manner to the satisfaction of both parties. Ensure all loaned items are handled, packed and transported safely. Ensure associated costs of all loans are identified and approved. Understand the issues and sensitivities pertaining to taonga Mäori in relation to loans. Eliminate, minimise and mitigate loan risks using quality management systems. Ensure contracts prepared for specific loans clarify responsibilities, and detail the risks plan for all parties. Monitor compliance and ensure loans procedure is followed. Ensure delegated approvals are obtained and reports provided. Ensure every loan has an appropriate contract. Experienced in identifying suitable taonga, from a preservation perspective, for inclusion in a visitor experience within a culture and heritage or leisure industry environment. Experienced in working with museum or relevant collections. Able to work with iwi and cultural organisations as kaitiaki of taonga. Registration experience in a museum, gallery or similar organisation. Able to manage projects and meet required deadlines. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment. Experience in creating procedure documents for the ongoing maintenance of storage and display cases housing collection items. Knowledge Strong understanding of the technical and preservation requirements for the display of cultural material, in a culture and heritage/leisure context. Strong conservation skills including condition reporting. Expert understanding of analysis in relation to condition reporting and display design. Carry out laboratory and workshop procedures in areas requiring expert preservation knowledge. Sound understanding of culture and heritage practices and procedures. Aware of the national and international trends in preservation and design. In depth knowledge of the preservation needs of the Treaty of Waitangi, Declaration of Independence and the Women s Suffrage Partition. Knowledge of Mäori art and visual culture. Ability to contribute to scholarship and mätauranga Mäori to showcase Archives New Zealand and this project nationally and internationally. An understanding of te reo Mäori that is sufficient for discussing and contributing to planning formal protocols. An understanding of tikanga and kawa and Mäori customary concepts in order to guide project practices around the careful and considered handling of taonga, in the context of iwi relationships to taonga. 4 An understanding of kaitiakitanga in relation to taonga collections. Skills Excellent preservation knowledge. Dedication to the care and management of taonga so that loss, deterioration or damage are minimised. Excellent written and interpersonal skills. Methodical and orderly work habits and an ability to keep accurate records. Sound negotiation and consultation skills, especially when managing loans and working with contractors. Disaster planning and response Create the disaster plan in consultation with the National Library collection team. Ensure the necessary training occurs in advance of the exhibition opening, to ensure business as usual roles are disaster ready. Contribute to the MOU between Archives New Zealand and the National Library in relation to disaster response and expectations. Education and Professional Memberships Tertiary qualification in conservation of cultural materials, and practical experience and application of skills demonstrated by completed collection management projects. Tikanga Māori/customary concepts demonstrates a working knowledge of concepts such as taonga, manaakitanga, kaitiakitanga, tapu, and mana and as they apply to Archives New Zealand and the National Library. Te Tiriti o Waitangi/Treaty of Waitangi demonstrates an advanced awareness of the Principles of the Treaty of Waitangi and provides leadership in their practical implementation.
