2 LASHRM 2017 Membership Drive by Karissa Wirt, LASHRM VP of Membership The La Crosse Area Society of Human Resource Management is kicking off its 2017 Membership Drive! H HR Professionals and business leaders are cordially invited to join our LASHRM chapter! Members benefit from local professional development opportunities, business resources, and HR networking. National SHRM members gain extra advantages from large resources affiliated with SHRM. SHRM offers its members tons of career building development conferences, tactical resources and guides, as well as a national and international network of professional HR colleagues. LASHRM Membership Benefits and National SHRM Membership Benefits What is 2017 Membership Drive?! It s the best time of the year for new HR professionals to join our local LASHRM chapter and the National SHRM organization! It is also a great time for local members to take the next step and advance their SHRM membership and to become a National member, if not already one. Individuals who join the La Crosse Area SHRM chapter now will receive 18 months of membership for the price of 12 months (A savings of $30.00)! As a part of this deal, new LASHRM members will receive a $50 gift card from the LASHRM chapter for joining during the Membership Drive. Additionally, any local SHRM member who also registers as a National SHRM member will be eligible to receive a $50 reimbursement from the LASHRM chapter. Join Now to receive a discount! If that isn t enough, there is a third way to earn perks, through a referral bonus. The LASHRM board will award a $50 gift card (limit one per member) for those members in good standing who refer a new applicant to LASHRM that results in a paid registration for a new LASHRM membership. 3 Upcoming Program August 2017 Project Proven Project Proven Coordinator, Tonya Van Tol will provide insights and information on WTC s re-entry services for incarcerated youth and adults. Project Proven provides adult education, basic literacy, and GED services to individuals held in area detention centers. The services are provided in collaboration with jail staff at the County of La Crosse. Participants in Project proven work closely with local law enforcement officials and agencies to provide instruction and services to formerly incarcerated individuals to help increase the likelihood of a successful transition from jail into the community. Wisconsin Wellness Council Conference September 12-13, 2017 Submitted by Kim Bauer, VP, Human Resources, Altra Federal Credit Union The Wellness Council is the only nonprofit organization in Wisconsin dedicated exclusively to helping employers design results-oriented wellness programs to maximize the health and productivity of their most valuable asset- their employees. 4 Certification Updates by Deanna Kabliska, LASHRM Certification Chair Congratulations to Kim Larson and Emily Wershofen! Each has passed their SHRM - CP exam! Get Certified! The Fall 2017 LASHRM SHRM and HRCI Study Group opportunity will be starting in September! The study group is a self-directed 12 week program to help you prepare to take the SHRM or HRCI exam that you may schedule for December or January. More details will be provided in August s newsletter. Not sure what which exam to take? HR.com has a comparison SHRM vs HRCI and the certification guidelines. Why Recertify? You ve worked hard to earn your HR certification credential. Now that you have it, why is it important to renew it? Recertification demonstrates your continued commitment to maintain your competence as an HR professional. The HR profession is constantly changing and evolving, therefore, it s important to stay current and up-to-date with your HR competency and knowledge. There are many ways to do this such as: Regularly attending the LASHRM monthly meetings Participating in seminars, webinars and other educational offerings Reading current HR books and journals Taking on new projects to learn and expand your skill set Volunteering your HR expertise to others Attending local, state, and national conferences The WISHRM state conference is fast approaching and offers myriad opportunities to learn, grow and network with your HR peers and earn credit toward recertification. Many of the sessions are pre-qualified for SHRM and/or HRCI credit and will advance you toward your recertification goal while helping you maintain your competence and stay abreast of the latest HR trends. The state conference will be held at the Kalahari Resort in Wisconsin Dells from October 11th - 13th.
