1 JOB DESCRIPTION CONTENT Job title Location Content Editor Air Gunner Our main office is in Wokingham, Berkshire; however the company reserves the right at anytime to require you to work at a different location either on a temporary or permanent basis on reasonable notice. Reference number Reporting relationships / organisation chart The Content Editor reports to the Editor-In-Chief Job purpose To lead manage and develop the magazine and associated products in line with the agreed editorial and commercial strategy in order to meet defined readership and circulation objectives. To deliver the very best quality editorial content and design to readers of the magazine, its website and brand extensions every month. Job dimensions The job requires the management of the editorial process and the maintenance of rigorous standards. The editor is expected to work with no direct supervision from his or her line manager. It involves a heavy workload in a deadline-driven environment. The Content Editor is expected to drive creativity and innovation in order to create growth opportunities for the title. The Content Editor has a public profile and is expected to conduct themselves in a manner which reflects Archant values.

2 Main responsibilities 1. COMMERCIAL To be the custodian of and spokesperson for the Magazines brands. Responsible for all brand extensions such as supplements and digital editions, involving planning, commissioning, subbing, proofing etc. briefing on creation of marketing material for these. Manage the editorial contributor s budget allocated by the Editor-In-Chief. Represent the magazine at shows and events, plus meeting advertisers, press officers etc 2. EDITORIAL GENERAL Commission editorial content to complement the features already organised and commissioned. Planning well in advance so that the editorial and commercial teams can plan the issue and sell well ahead of deadlines. Flat-plan every issue to ensure pace, no repetition and flow through the publication, balancing the needs of advertising against editorial. Ensuring dissemination of flat plan etc to advertising and editorial teams. Manage the production process, making sure all team members are on schedule for meeting deadlines. Proof-reading pages to ensure house style, eradicate both factual and literal errors. Work with magazine designers, responsible for the look and feel for the magazine, including advertorial pages etc. Constant close liaison with advertising team, working on future planning, advertising features, revenue-generating ideas. Work with digital team creating newsletter content, proofing and approving content before it is sent out Liaise with marketing team, subs team, distributors etc providing new ideas and leads for generating PR opportunities and subscription marketing ideas. To ensure the website is updated with new material. Working relationships Internally, you will work closely and constructively with the advertising and circulation and marketing functions. Externally, you will be commissioning writers and photographers and coordinating their activities. You will deal with a variety of organisations, agencies and individuals as all levels of authority. Most challenging part of the job Working in a deadline-driven environment is demanding and this role requires you to work towards set deadlines and handle high volumes of content, but always delivering accuracy and quality. Magazine production is done within the Archant Content Management System, on which the successful candidate will need training and support to use. Developments may require late changes and the Editor must understand the commercial context and production implications of their activities. Additional background information The role requires frequent travel in the UK, and abroad, where practical. 4 PERSON SPECIFICATION Job title: Location: Content Editor Air Gunner Berkshire Job ref no: SECTION ESSENTIAL CRITERIA METHOD OF ASSESSMENT Qualifications and/or education level attained Educated to degree level or equivalent. NCTJ preliminary Certificate in Journalism or NCE, and/or have experience of working successfully within a specialist magazine sector CV and interview Experience Able to demonstrate competence in verbal and written communications skills, critical thinking and maths. First-hand sector experience i.e knowledge of airgun sports, types, relevant laws and technical aspects A clean valid driving licence Experience in a senior editorial role either on a magazine or newspaper with a loyal and mature readership. Experience of managing a number of staff in writing, production and art Knowledge Understanding of up-to-date production techniques in a specialist magazine environment. CV and interview Interview Broad knowledge of the technical function of various airgun systems and related products. Proven commercial awareness, especially when working on advertising-related copy. Knowledge of the legislative requirements of journalists and publishers Understanding of budgets and finance Work related attributes and competencies Excellent communication and negotiation skills; able to effectively communicate with people at all levels; expresses ideas clearly and confidently; has the ability to influence people; listens and creates trust; thinks on their feet and doesn t give up when challenged.
