1 POSITION DESCRIPTION Job Title: Work Unit: Responsible To: Position Purpose: Occupational Therapist Community Allied Health-Tauranga Community Allied Health Team Leader The Occupational Therapist ensures client functional independence is optimised. Screen appropriate background data Use current theory, evidence and sound clinical reasoning to guide clinical decisions & practice Use appropriate assessments to determine the clients current performance levels Negotiate mutually agreed goals with the client and their whanau Identify home environment factors that may provide barriers Identify appropriate end point of intervention Discontinue Occupational therapy following service protocol Key Task 2: Safe, ethical, legal practice Act, and justify actions and treatment in compliance with relevant ethical, legal, professional, & safety requirements. Comply with the Health practitioners competence assurance Act 2003 Comply with the Code of Ethics for Occupational Therapists in NZ (2004) Comply with all other relevant legislation and codes, including the Health & disability code of rights & Privacy act. Present, record and report information professionally. Use ethical reasoning to make, and justify, decisions on ethical issues. Recognise where there is a conflict of interest, and refer the patient to another therapist or appropriate service or support Page 2

3 Key Task 3: Cultural Safety Care is client focused and planned in regard to ethnic, cultural, religious and other individual needs. The Occupational Therapist acts in accordance with the BOPDHB policy. Demonstrate the understanding of the complexity of culture. The Occupational Therapist is aware of his or her own cultural background, attitudes and values. Able to demonstrate a commitment to the Treaty of Waitangi and provide Occupational Therapy Services in a culturally safe manner. Is aware of and upholds DHB s commitment to the Treaty of Waitangi and improvement of Maori Health. Attends relevant Treaty of Waitangi/Bicultural training opportunities as arranged through BOPDHB. Key Task 4: Communication and Teamwork Uses a range of communication skills to establish and maintain effective therapeutic and working relationships Participates positively as a member of the interdisciplinary team, demonstrating individual responsibility and accountability. Works cooperatively and collaboratively to ensure a consistent approach to the attainment of the teams objectives Creates effective networks among colleagues and seeks advice as required. Works with other healthcare professionals in a collaborative manner to best meet client s needs. Demonstrate an ability to access information systems as appropriate Professional standard of conduct maintained (OTBNZ Code of Ethics) Demonstrates professional behaviour and presentation appropriate to the context. Work co-operatively to ensure a consistent approach to attaining common goals. Clients are prepared for treatment and have a clear indication of their treatment times, options and goals. Functions autonomously and works with others involved in the service delivery / team to ensure the best outcome for clients. Page 3

4 Key Task 5: Management of Self & People Manage self, time and resources to ensure performance are professional and supportive of the service and team goals. Organises and prioritises their workload and meets responsibilities in a timely manner whilst ensuring their caseload is realistic. Promote team functioning by making a positive contribution to the team and by supporting team members. Participates in, and uses feedback from, supervision to support and improve own performance. Recognise and manage relevant personal health needs to optimise professional and personal functioning Contribute to development of team objectives and share responsibilities for team outcome and service development. Undertakes teaching and learning activities with colleagues and students. Provides feedback to Educators and students. Promote Occupational Therapy. Key Task 6: Management of Environment & Resources Promote an environment, which maximises client safety, independence, quality of life whilst ensuring effective use of resources. Assess risk factors and identifies strategies that maintain own, client and others safely. Identifies and reports hazards / adhere to Employee Health and Safety Policies / Risk Management Implements responses, procedures and protocols for managing threats to safety within the clinical environment. Demonstrates an awareness and understanding of service standards, policies, procedures and precautions Demonstrates effective use of BOPDHB resources including appropriate and equitable Comply with recording, reporting of data collection / statistics in a timely manner (weekly) Use Funding agency guidelines for application recommendations of equipment and housing modifications Page 4

5 Key Task 7: Professional development Seek and use opportunity to continually develop professional knowledge and practice. Attends and participates in occupational therapy learning programmes. Undertakes additional courses to promote personal and professional development Actively participates in recertification programme(otbnz) Participates in performance development process Uses reflective practice. Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act You are required to maintain your current competency based practicing certificate 2. You must notify Manager of any changes to scope or conditions on practice (determined by OTBNZ) 3. You must complete the requirements of any competency programme 4. You must notify employer of concerns relating to the risk of harm to the public of another health practitioner practicing below the required standard of competence. 5. Know the provisions of the HPCAA as the governing legislation Health and Safety You are expected to meet the health and safety requirements set out in BOPDHB policies and protocols and any other requirements set out in the Health and Safety in Employment Act Treaty of Waitangi/Cultural Competencies BOPDHB is committed to the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi The Bay of Plenty District Health Board is a smokefree environment. 6 Person Specification: Qualifications- New Zealand Registered Occupational Therapist Essential Current OTBNZ annual practising certificate Full driver s license Evidence of being a Team player Commitment to cultural safety Effective communication skills Proven time management skills Desirable Experience /knowledge of current funding policy and procedures Personal Characteristics Adaptability: Demonstrate a willingness to be flexible, versatile and tolerant in a changing work environment while maintaining effectiveness and efficiency.
