The future of Learning and Development - what will it look like in 10 years time? building communities Tony Williams Executive Director People Orbit Group 27 September 2013

But what are we talking about here? Future of Learning and Development in 10 years time in.. Social housing sector? Not for profit sector? Public sector? Private sector? We must mean social housing surely! But does it matter?

Let s assume it is 2020 What will our society be like? What will have changed? Question for you What will the social Housing sector look and feel like? What do you think are the top 3 things that will change in our society by 2020? Will there be a sector?

Let s assume it is 2020 Orbit commissioned six of the country s leading experts to tell us how they thought the world would look in the year We face the most radical changes to our operating environment for decades. Why? A long-term housing crisis sees current demand for new homes at 250,000 a year against delivery of just 110,000. Orbit needed a new vision because doing nothing is not an option. We must therefore evolve our business to ensure that we can continue to help people access high-quality, affordable homes, create thriving communities and enable people to achieve their aspirations.

Let s assume it is 2020 The experts talked of a harsher world in 2020 where housing is in short supply, inequality has increased and public funding has diminished The housing crisis will be worse than it is today with growing demand for homes to rent and buy in the areas where we work. People will find it harder to access housing they can afford. Government investment in housing will not recover to historic levels and we will need to respond to a housing market which has changed Inequality will have got worse and we will face challenges in finding new ways to support, enable and encourage customers to take control of their own lives and thrive in the tough times ahead

Let s assume it is 2020 Demand for our services will increase as local authorities are forced to scale back their activities; our role in communities in 2020 is likely to be broader and deeper than it is today. There will be a huge increase in internet usage and mobile technology, people will demand a greater say in what services they access and how, as well as more ethical corporate culture Fuel poverty will increase and we will face challenges in cutting carbon emissions and enabling our residents to afford everincreasing fuel bills

What is the Orbit 2020 vision? Purpose (Why we exist) Building Communities By working together to improve the social, economic and environmental prospects of people and communities Passion (What we do) Housing Choice Providing a wide range of homes to meet needs and aspirations Community Investment Creating thriving and empowered communities Customer Offer Enabling customers to make choices and take control Resources (How we do it) People Investing in our people, creating a dynamic culture of trust, enterprise and achievement Value Maximising efficiency & resources through a commercial approach Futures Harnessing insight, innovation and technology to create solutions Principles Live our Values Be One Team Innovate & change Lead & influence Simplify & be consistent Learn from others Disciplined, open & accountable Make surpluses to reinvest Customer driven

What could the Orbit 2020 vision mean for the future of Learning and Development in the Social Housing Sector? Let s look at two possibilities.. Very little (more of the same with a bit of change) Create the New World

Possibility 1 Very little (more of the same with a bit of change) X L and D Strategy not directly linked to business vision and outcomes X L and D training output based not outcome focussed X Traditional training approaches remain the basic building blocks X E learning widespread X Mostly isolated but some sharing and consolidation X Still basically inward looking Learning and Development in 2020 would look and feel roughly the same with some changes at the edges - the traditional Social Housing Sector response to change!

But.. is this good enough given..

Need to change our culture What does Commercial with a social purpose mean for our people? Profit Results Innovation & Change Making a profit comes first in order for us to meet our future aspirations. It is everyone s responsibility. Relentless focus on achieving results..
