2 POSITION DESCRIPTION The Vice President of Development and Communications is ultimately accountable for the successful achievement of the Jewish Family Services (JFS) and the JFS Housing, Inc. (JFSHI) annual and long range fund development and communication strategies. Reporting to the President/CEO, she or he is responsible for the development, supervision and administration of all aspects of the fund development programs of JFS and JFSHI. This position is also responsible for the communications, marketing and volunteer services program for both entities. JFS has an annual operating budget of $5.4 million and JFS Housing has an annual operating budget of $1.0 million. The combined assets of JFS and JFS Housing, including the various housing properties, total almost $50 million. The Vice President of Development and Communications is responsible for raising $1.4 million dollars annually to support both entities through donations from individuals, foundation grants, government grants and special events. Approximately $1.2 million is raised annually to support JFS; the remainder supports the Housing facilities and programs. In addition, JFS has an endowment of $5 million, which is managed by the Milwaukee Jewish Community Foundation. This position will be responsible for increasing the endowments of JFS and JFSHI by securing additional gifts for existing endowments, as well as new, legacy gifts. The position is an integral part of JFS s senior management team and works closely with the Boards of Directors and JFS s Board fund development and marketing task force committees. As a relationship driven professional, the Vice President of Development & Communications will work with the key members of the JFS and JFSHI Boards of Directors to identify opportunities for fund development growth and appropriate involvement by Board members in the development process. JFS operates in a dynamic environment with a mix of revenue sources, including significant funding from government agencies, the United Way, Milwaukee Jewish Federation, foundations and generous individuals. The VP of Development & Communications will serve a variety of external and internal roles, building relationships with key donors and stakeholders, and current and potential partners in philanthropy. The ideal candidate will be highly organized, detail oriented and able to oversee multiple fund development and communications projects. Above all, she or he will have a true passion for the organization s mission with the strategic, analytical thinking and team-building skills necessary to lead JFS into the future and meet the needs of our clients. EXCITING OPPORTUNITY: Jewish Family Services will be celebrating its 150 th anniversary in September, The Vice President of Development & Communications will take the lead staff role in planning and overseeing the celebration of this special anniversary, working with board leadership of JFS and JFSHI, community leaders, stakeholders, staff, former clients, donors and program partners. This celebration will require the VP to work with an extensive task force/committee structure to plan all events, and programming leading up to and during the celebration. As part of this unique opportunity, this position will oversee a capital/endowment campaign to raise sufficient capital dollars to build and provide annual funding for a community center at the JFSHI Brown Deer housing campus to serve all residents. 2 P a g e

3 ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES I. FUND DEVELOPMENT 1) Partners with the President/CEO, and the Boards of JFS and JFSHI to create a comprehensive development plan to support ongoing and new program initiatives, to grow the annual fund and build the organizations endowments. 2) Seeks new and innovative sources of funding including program grants, government contracts, private foundations and individual donors. 3) Oversees department staff and efforts relating to all of the organization s fundraising activities including special events, planned giving, capital campaigns, direct mail and other donor relations and stewardship. II. III. LEADERSHIP AND PLANNING 1) Works closely with the JFS Board s Fund Development Task Force the JFSHI Board to develop and implement annual fund development goals aligned with the annual operating budget to support the various programs of both JFS and JFSHI. Proactively participates in Board meetings and provides reports to the Boards of Directors as needed. 2) Identifies, assesses, and informs the Boards of Directors of internal and external issues and trends that affect fund development. 3) Leads with ethical behavior and business practices, and ensures development efforts are consistent with standards in the field and align with the values of JFS and the philanthropic community. 4) Serves as professional advisor to the Boards in all areas of fund development. 5) Assists in identifying possible candidates for Board of Director positions who will advance the fund development goals of JFS and JFSHI. 6) Assesses fund development options and the continued viability of existing fund development, special events and strategies based on trends and conditions in the environment, and the vision and values of the organizations. COMMUNICATION AND VOLUNTEER SERVICES 1) Advances the public profile of JFS by developing new and innovative approaches to increase community awareness of its services. 2) Serves as one of JFS ambassadors to the Greater Milwaukee Jewish and general communities to promote enhanced visibility of organizational programs and services. 3) Represents JFS and its perspective on issues affecting individuals and families with community groups, the Milwaukee Jewish Federation, United Way of Greater Milwaukee and Waukesha County, foundations, government funders and the media. Actively networks with colleagues in related agencies and professional organizations. 4) Builds philanthropic strategic alliances; develops and implements collaborative approaches to fund development & endowment building through continued work with local & national organizations - both public and private. 5) Oversees an annual volunteer services plan which identifies opportunities for stakeholder involvement in direct service and special event volunteering for both JFS and the JFSHI campus in Brown Deer. Assures volunteer needs of the clients and campus activities are met. 6) Develops the annual reports for JFS and JFSHI, works with Board leadership for the annual meetings, and provides timely information to funders. 3 P a g e

4 7) Oversees all advertisements, marketing materials, web site development and maintenance and all other communications from JFS and JFSHI to the public. IV. STAFF LEADERSHIP and DEVELOPMENT 1.) Participates as an integral member of the senior professional staff team utilizing effective interpersonal skills. 2) Allows for opportunities for staff participation in fund development by assisting staff to become community messengers, telling the story of JFS and JFSHI and their impact. 3) Encourages and empowers staff to enhance fund development goals. 4) Provides education, support and resources to department staff for professional growth. 5) Maintains a diverse, positive, healthy and safe departmental work environment. 6) Recruits and selects staffs for the Development & Communications Department that possess the appropriate technical skills and personal abilities to help further the JFS mission. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SELECTION CRITERIA Bachelor s degree required. CFRE Certification is preferred. At least five years experience in fund development and communications. Demonstrated knowledge of fund raising including capital campaign, endowments, special events, annual campaigns, prospect research and planned/legacy giving. Experience in major donor cultivation and solicitation. Experience working with board members and volunteers. Experience with donor systems and with supervising a staff and related consultants. Sensitivity to various cultures, religions and socioeconomic status. Familiarity with administration and provision of social services, state and local government operations and the legislative process.
