2 Widening Participation Employability Officer Careers Centre, Student Education Service Are you interested in making a contribution to the employability agenda? Do you want to play a part in improving the employability of students, particularly those with multiple dimensions of disadvantage? Do you have experience of working with students from diverse backgrounds and delivering employability information and advice? You will be involved in work to improve the career readiness of students who are under represented at the University and/or who may have protected characteristics, contributing to the development and implementation of the University s Access Agreement. You will map current employability interventions and engagement and work with colleagues to plan how best to communicate the offer and increase engagement. Using your experience of delivering projects to deadlines and demonstrating impact, you will also organise and deliver interventions to address the various aspects of social mobility, diversity and inclusion, monitor the progress of students taking part and evaluate the impact. The interventions will be designed to engage students from the first year onwards in their career planning. You will need excellent communication skills in order to review written communications, systems and websites and support colleagues to ensure that good practice is embedded and engaging. What does the role entail? As the Widening Participation Employability Officer your main duties will include: Delivering information and advice to students, graduates and researchers of all disciplines, particularly those who are under represented at the University or who may have protected characteristics, including individual careers information and advice, application and interview support, mock interviews and delivery of workshops; Supporting the defined cohort s engagement in faculty and central careers interventions, including mentoring;

3 Working with the Data, Systems and Quality Officer, analysing data and surveys to define the current baseline and monitor the career readiness and eventual outcomes for students; Supporting the work of the lead Careers Consultant for Diversity/Inclusion, identifying good practice which can be adopted across the University and providing advice and guidance to colleagues; Developing and maintaining key effective partnerships across the University to effect improvements in service delivery and ultimately in graduate outcomes; Developing a relationship with the Leeds University Union officers and student societies to better understand and respond to the needs of widening participation (WP) students and diverse groups; Developing and reviewing student feedback in relation to interventions and help shape operational plans to deliver improvements; Improving student engagement with Student Careers and Placements; Responsibility for the Student Careers website in relation to information for students from under represented backgrounds or those with protected characteristics; Supporting the University Employability Inclusivity Group and representing the Careers Centre at regional and national events and as an active member of the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services (AGCAS); Organising with colleagues the established pre career fair networking events and supporting the work with employers in relation to diversity and inclusion; Participating in Student Careers activities and working groups as appropriate; Participating fully in staff development and in-service training as required. These duties provide a framework for the role and should not be regarded as a definitive list. Other reasonable duties may be required consistent with the grade of the post. What will you bring to the role? As a Widening Participation Employability Officer you will have: Relevant experience of working with widening participation students with an understanding of, and empathy with, the defined cohort of students and the potential or perceived disadvantages they may face; Experience of providing employability information and advice;

4 An understanding of higher education and the issues impacting on student employability; Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to adapt to a diverse range of client groups; Proven experience of developing and delivering employability activities and opportunities; The ability to prioritise and organise your own workload with experience of successfully delivering multiple projects to deadlines; IT skills including experience of computer applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, the internet and ; The ability to work collaboratively with a range of stakeholders. You may also have: A relevant vocational qualification such as an NVQ level 4 in Advice and Guidance or equivalent; Experience of developing information materials and web content; An understanding of social media and how it can be used effectively to engage students/graduates and employers; Knowledge of labour market trends, employer expectations and the occupational, training and learning opportunities open to graduates; The ability to analyse data and information for future planning.
