1 Job Description Title of Job: Head of Department: English Responsible to: Key Purpose: Conditions of Service: Assistant Principal The purpose of the job is to maximise student recruitment, retention and achievement, and the quality of teaching, learning and assessment in the Department of English. In order to realise this purpose, the Head of Department line manages members of staff organised in curriculum teams who support students through academic and pastoral support processes. Curriculum teams design, deliver and develop the portfolio of courses and are responsible for monitoring the quality of these. As set out in the CNWL Lecturing Staff contract Grade: Management scale point 5-8 Hours/working pattern: 36 hours per week, 52 weeks per year Main duties and responsibilities: Marketing and Recruitment of Students 1. To inform and develop marketing for the department. 2. To understand market needs associated with their respective industry and employment sector. 3. To liaise and strengthen links with industry/employers and the community to ensure student access to learning and recruitment. 4. To manage the recruitment and guidance of students onto the correct courses, including the use of initial and diagnostic assessment and agreements for learning support. 5. To provide staffing for open evenings, recruitment events enrolment, competitions and other events. Design and Delivery of Programmes 6. To provide a curriculum steer and academic rigour within the strategic framework of the College. 7. To lead on the planning of the Department curriculum delivery with reference to national and local priorities and funding drivers.

2 8. To ensure the availability of schemes of work and planning for teaching and learning, including the use of Learning Facilitators where appropriate. 9. To ensure that IT/eLearning is increasingly used as a tool for learning in all programmes and to develop this and the VLE across the Department. 10. To ensure that assessment plans are consistent with College policies and that students have information about what standards and work are expected of them. 11. Where relevant ensure that English, maths and learning support strategies are integral to the design and delivery of programmes. 12. To ensure that all learners across College who have not yet gained a Grade A*-C in GCSE English work towards this in order to meet Study Programme conditions of funding. 13. To develop new and innovative methods of delivery relevant to learner needs and which maximise the use of flexible and open, distributed distance learning. 14. To contribute a Department programme of courses, including English Study Programmes, Cross College Study Programme and Apprenticeship GCSE and Functional Skills English delivery and adult GCSE and Functional Skills English delivery. Quality and Evaluation 15. To raise the standards of teaching learning and assessment in the Department and to share good practice across the College. Undertaking regular lesson observations and learning walks are an intrinsic part of this responsibility. 16. To ensure the completion of course reviews on an annual basis, using evaluation and student information to inform the Department s Self-Assessment Report and monitor the implementation of any improvement activities. 17. To ensure that student evaluation is undertaken consistently and within quality procedures. 18. To contribute to the improvement of data related systems and to set and achieve targets for the maximisation of improvements, which are understood by all staff, and to assist in measuring success. 19. To liaise with external awarding bodies. Student Support and Tutoring 20. To teach over the academic year. 21. To provide an appropriate tutoring and student support structure within the Department consistent with College policies and the needs of students, ensuring that all staff monitor and promote student attendance and punctuality. 22. To provide reports for parents/carers on a regular basis and organise parent/employer events to provide feedback on student progress. 23. To ensure that students are fully aware of their progress through clear, active and purposeful academic tutoring based on target setting principles. 24. To ensure the effective discipline and management of students, including the keeping of records and provision of information. 25. To ensure that all learning agreements and profiling documents are recorded and kept in accordance with the College s requirements.

3 Planning and Change 26. To prepare the Department s curriculum and business plan on an annual basis in discussion with course teams and to communicate effectively with all staff to engage them in the planning process and develop the Department s qualification file. 27. To use a number of communication strategies to inform and be informed (team meetings, team briefings, social events). 28. To contribute to the development of application for funding and new initiatives and where appropriate lead and manage projects. 29. To prepare staff and course timetables in liaison with other Heads of Department, Section Managers and Course Team Leaders. Resources 30. To manage a designated budget for part-time staffing and consumables, staying within budget and providing services according to an agreed service level agreement. 31. To ensure that teaching resources are fit for purpose and accessible to teaching staff. 32. To deploy staff effectively and efficiently to maximise resources and minimise expenditure, ensuring that staffing resource allocations are not exceeded and to ensure that the Department achieves its financial contribution to the College by operating effective business plans. 33. To ensure that accommodation under the Head of Department control meets the College s accommodation standards and is managed efficiently. Staffing and Development 34. To ensure that there are effective channels of communication so that staff are fully informed and know how to raise issues of concern or make suggestions for improvement. 35. To ensure that arrangements are in place to induct and support staff in the management of teaching, learning and assessment, including the observation of all teaching staff. 36. To encourage staff in the development of teaching, learning and assessment strategies, and the updating of skills and knowledge relevant to their subject or employment sector. 37. To lead and manage the staff in the Department in order to maximise each person s potential. Effective staff appraisal is critical to this duty. 38. To line manage and implement all relevant staff policies including discipline, grievance, etc. 39. To ensure that all staff within the Department are effectively appraised and are developed as required. 40. To coach and support staff to achieve, improve and develop to their full potential. 41. To induct, train and develop staff, giving access to relevant knowledge and information necessary for them to do their job. 42. To induct and support any hourly paid or agency personnel so that they can carry out their duties effectively.

To ensure that there is effective implementation of all College policies and procedures. 3. To complete all documents necessary to comply with College personnel policies, e.g. agency booking forms, sickness forms, appraisal forms, etc. and ensure all staffing records are kept up-to-date. 4. To undertake any training relevant to the efficient delivery of any of the above duties and to take responsibility for the post holders own professional development. 5. To undertake any such other, broadly analogous task as the Principal or their delegate may from time to time determine, or the demands of the College may require. 6. To carry out his/her duties and responsibilities at all times with due regard to the College s Safeguarding, Equal Opportunities, Health & Safety, No Smoking and Quality Management Policies. Special Conditions 1. The nature of this post means that the post holder may need to travel from time to time to all the College centres and to other external venues 2. The post holder will be contracted to work for a defined number of hours per week but it is a requirement of this post that the holder will flex these hours to reasonably meet external needs which may include working evenings and weekends. 3. This post falls within the scope of the regulations requiring a Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) check. Further Education is an ever-changing service and all staff are expected to participate constructively in College activities and to adopt a flexible approach to their work. As and when the work of the College develops or changes so the areas of responsibility may be subject to change, and the job description will be reviewed. This job description is current at the date of issue and will be reviewed annually during the appraisal process and will be varied in the light of the business needs of the College in consultation with the post holder.
