7 Question 1: What goals, dreams, or aspirations do you have for you/your family? To be successful and stable Own a home, participate in community events, and feel safe Complete my education, pay off debt, own a home, inspire others, love others, and fight for equality and justice For me: to graduate from college and get a better paying job. For my family: that they never have to live paycheck to paycheck like I do. To continue living a healthy and comfortable life in this community and know that all others in this community have the same opportunities to be safe, healthy, and comfortable. Question 2: What are the biggest thing in the way of you/your family reaching your goal? Time and finances Lack of well-paying full-time jobs in Huntington. I make half of my former salary doing exactly the dame job as I did in another city. I have a college degree and have worked at the same place (that requires a college degree) and I just broke earning $11.00 an hour this year. We are losing good people because businesses and companies don t want to or can t pay reasonable wages for jobs. Yet factories where only a high school degree is required make sometimes close to $ It doesn t seem fair. High student loan debt and a car payment are keeping me from saving enough money to live on in the event of an emergency. The high cost of home ownership is daunting as well. I believe paying off my debt would allow me to save enough for my financial goals. Question 3: What do you think the Huntington County community can do to help you get there in 2-3 years? Financial stability seminars or classes Help find low costs way to eat healthy and exercise Better paying jobs or programs that could help families get by to be able to someday afford to buy a home, etc. Continue to work to draw in companies and organizations that will complement the existing opportunities in our community. I think if they were to sponsor a Dave Ramsey workshop (I ve seen them available, but they are always about $0 to attend, which if you are having financial troubles isn t always something you have access to easily). Perhaps a mentor program with someone who has gotten out of financial struggle and even though their income has not changed, their situation has; maybe pairing them with someone who is having issues and they can be an adviser or sounding board. Question 4: What resources, groups, and programs have been helpful for you/your family in the past? Community Dialogues Our church community, the public library, and several nonprofits what are concerned with disseminating helpful information. We used Hoosier Healthwise a few years ago and it was a godsend. I also am extremely thankful for the Boys and Girls Club and Love INC. We donate to Love s whenever possible because they give without question to everyone, and we know what it s like to struggle and just need short term help. Churches, YMCA, Boys and Girls Club, YSB, Bowen, Crossroad, Lifespring Counseling, Purdue Extension, Parks, Parkview Extension, Parks, Parkview Huntington Hospital, Public Libraries, Love INC. I cannot list them all. I believe Huntington County is incredibly fortunate to have the number of qualify services and resources and the willingness of the people attached to those agencies and services to communicate and partner with one another is hugely valuable.

8 Summary These are the top three issues/concerns that the Huntington County community is facing. 1. Money Families are wanting more income, better/higher paying jobs, and more jobs in Huntington. They want help with saving money and budgeting. They want to work on paying off debt such as student loans. 2. Housing Families are wanting to own their own home. They want more mortgage options such as mortgages that work with student loan debt, and help with the home buying process. 3. Health Families want to be physically and mentally healthy. They want more health clinics, maybe even free health clinics. They want to see smoking and drugs decrease in the community.
