Presentation Overview This presentation will: Describe how livability is a focus for the I 80 Corridor System Master Plan; Discuss the six principles; Overview of self assessment approach; and Provide a brief status on roll out. Please go to
Corridor Stewardship Taking the Long View Communities are connected in multiple ways Economically Socially Culturally Scarce resources Declining fuel tax revenues Anti tax political environment Coordinated action to improve outcomes for all parties
Corridor Stewardship Engaging livability in the I 80 CSMP Dialogue Livability workshop to identify issues and potential stakeholder partners Initially planned to review planning documents for livability principles Livability language quite different than traditional transportation planning language Need to self analyze to judge how well livability is integrated into plans and day to day operations
I 80 CSMP Study Organization
Livability Principles Provide more transportation choices. Develop safe, reliable, and economical transportation choices to decrease household transportation costs, reduce our nation s dependence on foreign oil, improve air quality, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and promote public health. Promote equitable, affordable housing. Expand location and energy efficient housing choices for people of all ages, incomes, races, and ethnicities to increase mobility and lower the combined cost of housing and transportation.
Livability Principles Enhance economic competitiveness. Improve economic competitiveness through reliable and timely access to employment centers, educational opportunities, services and other basic needs by workers, as well as expanded business access to markets. Support existing communities. Target federal funding toward existing communities through strategies like transit oriented, mixed use development and land recycling to increase community revitalization and the efficiency of public works investments and safeguard rural landscapes.
Livability Principles Coordinate and leverage federal policies and investment. Align federal policies and funding to remove barriers to collaboration, leverage funding, and increase the accountability and effectiveness of all levels of government to plan for future growth, including making smart energy choices such as locally generated renewable energy. Value communities and neighborhoods. Enhance the unique characteristics of all communities by investing in healthy, safe, and walkable neighborhoods rural, urban, or suburban.
Self Assessment Think about personality assessment Social psychology that identifies aspects of one's identity Many variants such as employment, leadership, working in groups... Self Assessment has a reflective quality Once we have a perspective established, we can reflect on legitimacy and veracity of the perspective For livability, this self reflection should provide insight and depth to our understanding of the language of livability
