1 The Graduate Management Programme for Professionals in Print & Media

2 Introduction We are delighted to launch our new Management Programme: A dynamic mixture of training, development and networking opportunities. The Graduate Management Programme for Professionals in Print and Media has been developed with input from across the Industry supply chain to provide Managers and Technical Specialists within the Industry with a personal and professional development plan. The programme is aimed at key personnel who are committed to developing their skills and knowledge across all aspects of management. Whilst the content is tailored to the Print and Media Industry the learning and qualifications are transferable to other sectors. The Programme will be managed by the BPIF, the leading trade organisation for the Print and Media Industry. The qualification will include BPIF Graduation and the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) Level 5 Diplomas in Management (NVQ) and Principles of Leadership & Management (VRQ). The ILM is the UK s foremost leadership and management qualifications body and the qualification is nationally recognised as equivalent to foundation degree level. Whilst the programme has an overall structure the detail of the programme can be tailored to suit the requirements of learners either on an individual basis or as clusters within specific regional groupings or where numbers allow to a specific company requirement. The timetable for the programme is scheduled over two years. It has been designed to allow delegates to actively contribute to continual performance improvement within their own organisation whilst continuing in their full time roles. There are no formal entry qualifications but participants will normally be in a position to apply the requirements of the NVQ programme. This new management development programme is being jointly funded with the assistance of the Government s Employer Ownership Programme (EOP). 2 The Graduate Management Programme for Professionals in Print & Media

3 Overview of the Programme The programme will consist of four elements n Workshops which will include 8 mandatory sessions and 8 optional sessions. The workshop programmes are outlined on pages 4-7 of this brochure. The workshops will provide learners with the opportunity to meet senior managers within the Industry. They will have access to benchmarking case studies from over 600 Print & Media companies and the demonstration of leading edge management tools. n Diploma in Principles of Leadership & Management which provides the theoretical background to support effective management There are a number of mandatory units, covering the skills and knowledge learners need to be effective at this level: Thorough grounding in their roles and responsibilities Crucial soft skills including; communication and relationship building Develop critical thinking abilities Understand financial concepts that inform management decisions. Apply concepts to make a financial case Identify and analyse opportunities for improvement Find and implement innovative solutions Leading through change To reach the required standards learners will submit a combination of innovation reports, work based assignments and reflective logs. n NVQ work based Diploma in Management which provides the opportunity to apply learning in the workplace and demonstrate competence across management disciplines. There are a number of mandatory units including developing operational plans, planning change, providing leadership and working productively. These are combined with a broad range of optional units tailored to the individual and business needs. To reach the required standards the learners will provide evidence from the workplace which can include observations, professional discussions, questioning, interviews, witness testimonies and physical products. n Functional skills in Maths, English & ICT. Learners demonstrate their ability in these key skills which are test assessed. These are level 2 standards which many learners will have exemptions through prior learning. Those taking the tests will be provided with support to ensure success. The mandatory units are combined with optional units covering a broad range of core and specialist topics. 8 Supporting Learners On Site Support Each learner will be allocated a personal tutor who will guide them throughout their programme. The tutor will meet to support them as they select projects and workplace performance improvement activities to develop their NVQ portfolios. The tutors will assess their progress towards achieving the required levels of knowledge and skills to meet the qualification standard. Each tutor will be supported by specialists in HR, H&S and Operational effectiveness who can act as mentors to the students. In addition a panel of industry mentors will be available to provide additional support to the programmes. Individual Membership of BPIF and ILM Learners will have free individual membership of the BPIF whilst they remain learners on the programme. Benefits will include access to all of the BPIF publications, networking events and attendance at the European Management Conference. In addition, learners will be registered with the Institute of Leadership and Management giving access to a wide range of benefits including on-line learning material. On-Line Support Learners will have the opportunity to access material including articles, webinars, questionnaires and case studies to support their learning via the BPIF s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). They will also have their own electronic NVQ portfolio and on-line access to their own tutors. They will be encouraged to adopt continual professional development as part of their ongoing career management and will be introduced to sources of information. 8 The Graduate Management Programme for Professionals in Print & Media
