1 JOB DESCRIPTION 1. JOB TITLE: Senior Audiovisual Technician 2. HRMS REFERENCE NUMBER: HR ROLE CODE: STECLIS2 4. DEPARTMENT: Learning and Information Services 5. ORGANISATION CHART: 6. JOB PURPOSE: A senior member of the team providing an audiovisual support service to the University. The team is involved with equipment installation and maintenance, emergency and routine support for classroom equipment, photography and filming. 7. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Learning and Information Services provides the following categories of service to the University in several physical locations: communications and IT infrastructure, network, desktops and software; information systems and management of the VLE; printed and electronic library resources and services; AV equipment installation and support; graphic design and a Print Unit. The main AV Services team are based at the Chester Campus, with responsibility for the technical and user support of all University-owned AV equipment on that campus and at 2 of the Faculty of Health and Social Care Education Centres. Other team members provide first line AV support at the Warrington Campus, Riverside, Thornton Science Park and Kingsway and they are supported for second line requirements by the central team at Chester Campus. Support is managed through a Helpdesk system. While all members of the AV team provide the full range of services available, they also specialise in different areas of support and the specific focus for this post is the technical expertise in the installation, configuration and maintenance of teaching room equipment, including control systems. The postholder supports the Media Services Development and Support Manager in the supervision of the AV team and the allocation of tasks to them.

WORK PERFORMED AND/OR KEY RESULT AREAS: 8.1 Communicating Effectively The role holder uses an incident reporting system to receive, document and allocate work on AV equipment problems and communicates with colleagues and users via this system and , ensuring that information provided is clear and accurate. Written and verbal communication is essential for allocation of incidents and monitoring of their resolution and to provide explanations of technical matters in a way which can be easily understood. The role holder occasionally communicates with external AV companies in relation to technical and other practical matters. 8.2 Leadership and Working Collaboratively The role holder is a member of the Learning and Information Services team as a whole and contributes as a team member to the achievement of the department s objectives. The role holder is a member of the AV Services team and works collaboratively with staff in other teams, such as the Desktop Services team and members of staff of other departments to provide AV equipment and services as they require. 8.3 Liaison and Networking The role holder liaises regularly with other team members in LIS and with staff across the University about the solution of technical and other problems and about the specification and configuration they require for their equipment. The role holder participates in and contributes to university networks by involvement in the LIS Faculty Support Partnership structure for one or more Faculties. 8.4 Delivering a High Quality Standard of Service The role holder provides a high standard of technical service for academic or other staff and students who ask for support or require information and is required to create a positive image of the institution by being responsive and prompt in responding to requests and referring the user to the right person if necessary. The role holder is responsible for the technical configuration and support of classroom equipment to ensure that, as far as possible, it is provided as required by the users and is fully operational. When supervising the work of the AV Services team the role holder ensures a high quality service to users by allocating incidents between staff as appropriate and monitoring their resolution. 8.5 Effective Decision Making The role holder is required to take independent decisions about the technical installation of AV equipment, or about the allocation of work between AV support staff.

3 The role holder is required to be party to some collaborative decisions, for example in problem solving, classroom equipment design or the organisation of a particular task by the team. 8.6 Planning and Organising Self and Others The roleholder is able to plan, prioritise and organise their own work or resources to achieve the objectives they have agreed with their manager. The roleholder is required to organise the workload of the AV Services team in collaboration with the Media Services Development and Support Manager. 8.7 Innovation and Improvement (Effective Problem Solving) The roleholder oversees external contractors for the installation and configuration of AV solutions for classroom use to improve provision in line with industry and sector developments. It is an important requirement of the role to use initiative and creativity to resolve problems where the optimal solution may not be immediately apparent but has to be assessed by a process of reasoning, weighing up the pros and cons of different approaches; identifying and assessing practical options; and breaking the problem down into component parts. The analysis of technical requirements for an effective AV solution and the specification and testing of possible options before implementation are examples of this requirement. 8.8 Analysis and Research The role holder is required to analyse and research options available for the resolution of technical issues and advise others on their findings. It is a daily requirement of the role to solve technical and other problems by analysing routine data or information provided by relevant equipment. It is essential that the role holder works accurately to complete the task and resolve the technical problems. 8.9 Sensory and Physical Demands The role holder is required to carry out tasks at a level which would require either learning certain methods or routines or involve moderate physical effort, such as the use of a trolley to move items or the installation of equipment in a lectern Work Environment The role holder is required to work in an environment which is relatively stable and has little impact on the role holder or the way in which work is completed. The roleholder may be required to work in all University campusus. The role holder is also required to understand how the work environment could impact on their own work or that of colleagues and take standard actions, within health and safety guidelines where applicable, for example, when moving, installing and maintaining electrical equipment.

4 8.11 Pastoral Care and Welfare The role holder is occasionally required to show sensitivity to those who may need help for example if a lecture is compromised due to equipment failure. The role holder may initiate appropriate action by involving relevant specialist or more senior staff Team Development The role holder will assist new starters working in the same team on standard information or procedures. The role holder is occasionally required to train or guide others on specific tasks, for example, technical configuration and use of equipment in lecterns, giving advice, guidance and feedback on the basis of their own knowledge or experience Teaching and Learning Support The role holder helps to develop and deliver training and guidance either verbally, written or within training workshops as appropriate to wider university staff and students in relation to the work of the AV Services team Knowledge and Experience The role holder is required to have sufficient knowledge or expertise to work on day to day issues in their own area without direct or continuous reference to others General To undertake any other duties commensurate with your grade, and/or hours of work, as may reasonably be required of you. Knowledge of infrastructure and network systems Experience of other AV functions such as photography, digital signage operation or filming Experience of training technicians and users in the use of AV equipment Managing self and inspiring others: Approachable with good communication skills Documentation experience and skills Experience of supervision of team members. Desirable

6 Working together: Flexible attitude Capable of working individually and as part of a team Organisational and stakeholder awareness: Experience of providing customer and user support in relation to AV equipment Experience of working in an HE environment Desirable Requirements are those, without which, a candidate would not be able to do the job. 7 UNIVERSITY OF CHESTER TERMS & CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT LEARNING AND INFORMATION SERVICES SENIOR AUDIOVISUAL TECHNICIAN SALARY SCALE University Scale OS7, points 23-26, 25,513-27,864 per annum payable monthly in arrears. RESIDENCE REQUIREMENT It is a requirement of this post that within 12 months of appointment, the post-holder should live within a 30 mile radius or within a one hour travelling time by public transport from the University. HOURS OF WORK 36.5 hours per week, to be worked as follows:- Monday to Thursday 8.30am pm Friday 8.30am pm (less one hour for lunch each day) A flexible approach to work will be required as there may be occasions when it would be necessary for you to work additional hours as dictated by the workload. HOLIDAY ENTITLEMENT 22 days per annum (pro-rata during the commencement and cessation years), rising to 27 days after five years' continuous service. Two extra statutory days per annum during the Christmas period. MEDICAL EXAMINATION Successful candidates will be required to complete an Occupational Health questionnaire, and may be required to undergo a medical examination. ESSENTIAL CERTIFICATES Short-listed candidates will be asked to bring to interview, proof of qualifications as outlined on the Job Description and Person Specification provided. Upon appointment, copies of essential certificates will be required by HRM Services. PENSION SCHEME The University operates two pension schemes for support staff: The default scheme is the Higher Education Defined Contribution Scheme (HEDCS), which is administered by Friends Life. The Cheshire Local Government Pension Scheme, to which the University is an admitted body. All support staff are entitled to participate in one of these schemes. Some staff will be automatically enrolled into a scheme, depending on their age and earnings, but if they do not wish to remain a member of the scheme, they will be entitled to opt out after enrolment.
