3 Job Description Job Title: Director of Fundraising Maternity leave: October 2017-July 2018 Responsible To: Chief Location: Battersea Responsible For: Team of 58 staff including 3 direct reports: Head of Public Fundraising Head of Philanthropy & Partnerships Fundraising Team Administrator Works With/Key Contact: Trustees Director of Marketing & Commercial Director of Communications Director of HR Director of Finance & Corporate Services Director of Operations Veterinary director Salary: Dependent upon experience Context and Background Established in 1860, Battersea Dogs & Cats Home aims aim to never turn away a dog or cat in need of our help, caring for them until their owners or loving new homes can be found, no matter how long it takes. We are champions for, and supporters of, vulnerable dogs and cats, determined to create lasting changes for animals in our society. We currently operate from three centres in Battersea London, Old Windsor in Berkshire and Brands Hatch in Kent. Every year, we care for over 7,000 dogs and cats. As part of a transformational growth strategy the Home has invested heavily in a new fundraising team and activities, increasing income more than tenfold since 2010 and substantially reducing an over reliance on legacy income. Our fundraising programme has grown rapidly across all areas; most notably by developing a significant individual donor base, establishing a major gifts programme and launching new corporate partnerships, events and community fundraising activity. Yet the opportunity to increase our impact for animals through growing a significant and sustainable income base remains considerable, and as part of a new fundraising strategy launched in late 2016, our team are set to achieve ambitious year-on-year growth in order transform the lives of the animals in our care. Our talented and award-winning team is vibrant, ambitious and well respected. It s therefore an exciting time to work at one of the country s most loved and best known animal charities and work as part of one of the fastest growing fundraising teams. Main purpose of the role To provide leadership and management to the Home s fundraising team, ensuring they meet their financial objectives in 2018.
4 Overall Objectives To lead the delivery of the fundraising strategy and ensure performance against targets in 2018, reforecasting and reporting progress quarterly. To provide leadership and day to day support to the fundraising team, specifically the fundraising management team. Responsibilities Responsibility To line manage the fundraising heads of department, ensuring they have sufficient support and resource to carry out their roles effectively. To represent the fundraising function as part of the Directors team and to work with Director colleagues to deliver cross-organisational projects and support to the CEO as needed. To lead and develop the fundraising department, giving the leadership needed to enable their work. To undertake and present quarterly reforecasts, working with the fundraising heads of department to refine and adapt activities to hit or exceed targets across the fundraising portfolio. To report to the CEO monthly, and to the Board of Trustees quarterly, on the progress of the fundraising team against targets, fundraising compliance and fundraising complaints. To drive forward a programme and culture of insight and innovation across the department, ensuring key projects focused on significant new opportunities are implemented. To present the 2018 budget and plan with detailed breakdown, rationale, Key Performance Indicators and updated 10 year projections to the Finance, Audit & Risk Committee and Trustees. To ensure the fundraising department s compliance with data protection and GDPR legislation, the Fundraising Code of Practice and other relevant best practice guidelines. To engage in the development of a range of significant relationships, with high net worth individuals, corporates, trusts and committee members, as needed by the Philanthropy & Partnerships team and particularly in support of the Windsor capital appeal. To liaise and negotiate with external partners, as needed by the Public Fundraising team. Time taken 20%
5 To engage with sector bodies and keep abreast of best practice and new developments in fundraising, ensuring the team is updated. To deal promptly and professionally with all escalated matters relating to the fundraising department, thus ensuring positive outcomes for supporters, volunteers, staff, and the Home. Decision Making and Accountabilities Decision Making Overall delivery of the fundraising strategy and plan, including delivery of income and expenditure targets, stopping and starting activities within overall budget. Team leadership, management, recruitment, development, objectives setting and monitoring in line with BDCH policies and procedures. Management and development of budgets, including quarterly reforecasting and reporting, as well as longer term forecasting and modelling. Accountability Accountable for c. 24m non-legacy income and c. 15m of investment (projected for 2018). Personal budget accountability for invoices up to 100k. Reporting against budgets and forecasts. Developing strong relationships with key internal and external contacts. Review and refocus team strategies and activities in order to meet agreed targets. Creating a high performing team, meeting and exceeding targets and KPIs. Effective leadership and line management of 3 direct reports and 55 indirect reports. Essential qualifications, experience and skills Person Specification Job Specific Demonstrable experience of working in a director of fundraising role in a dynamic environment, with an impressive track record of fundraising success across multiple disciplines Extensive line management experience and advanced team leadership skills, including significant experience of managing senior fundraisers Strong evidence of strategic planning, budgeting benchmarking and monitoring. Plus proven experience of delivering against eight figure targets Strong ability to evaluate complex information and make decisions based on evidence and understanding of multiple situations High level of numeracy, accuracy, financial awareness and attention to detail Proven experience of securing, managing and developing significant and ongoing major giving relationships with individuals, corporates and trusts Exceptional relationship management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects, relationships and deadlines, in a fast paced, demanding and dynamic fundraising environment
6 Strong ability to motivate self and others to deliver high quality work, and to encourage and develop staff, promote cross team working and use initiative to improve and implement the team's work Extensive interpersonal and consultative skills, including the ability to communicate, present, negotiate, influence and build credibility with colleagues, supporters and external parties as well as proven experience of working constructively and collaboratively with colleagues from different teams Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to communicate and represent the Home internally and externally at the highest levels, with the ability to adapt your communication style for different groups Extensive experience of successfully motivating, leading and developing high performance teams, including setting clearly defined objectives and managing performance Extensive experience of positively embracing and adapting to change by identifying, leading & managing change in line with organisational objectives Extensive experience of a flexible approach to managing and prioritising a high workload and multiple complex issues and tasks in a changing environment with tight deadlines Experience of keeping up to date with and applying good practice in your role IT literate with good experience of MS Office and other relevant IT systems as appropriate for the role Understanding of the Fundraising Code of Practice, Gift Aid and Data Protection Commitment to and understanding of the vision and mission of Battersea Dogs & Cats Home Desirable qualifications, experience and skills Fundraising or marketing qualification Capital appeal fundraising experience Delivering presentations and pitches to a variety of audiences at the highest levels
