1 JOB DESCRIPTION LEARNING SERVICES: LIBRARY ASSISTANT Section Learning Services Location: Ipswich (Waterfront) Campus. Salary: Within the range 15,356 to 16,618 per annum/pro rata Grade: 2 Contract status: Permanent Hours of work: per week. Work is across the week, including evening and weekends (see below) Pension: USS Annual Leave entitlement 25 days pro rata Responsible to: User Engagement and Operational Librarian Reports on a day-to-day basis to: User Engagement and Operational Librarian About the Department The Department of Learning Services is part of the Directorate of Registry and Student Services, led by the Academic Registrar. The Department has a broad remit to deliver effective and efficient services and resources which underpin the achievement and progression of all learning within our institutional community. Specific service delivery consists of library collections and services, learning and development in relation to information, research, digital and academic literacies, advice and guidance in relation to intellectual property and open access publishing and the management of a range of related platforms and systems. Purpose of the job: The role works within the User Engagement team, and wider Department of Learning Services to support the delivery of high quality, effective and efficient library services to the staff and students and external members of the University community. Working as part of a discreet team, the role primarily, but not exclusively, supports delivery outside of core service hours, which are currently Monday Friday Role Outline Under the supervision of the User Engagement and Operational Librarian, and after a thorough training programme, the role holder will be expected to: 1. Provide timely, high quality, front line service delivery, including answering enquiries in person, via and by telephone; making referrals and or appointments for specialist support, as appropriate; and providing advice and guidance in relation to IT queries. 2. Provide assistance in accessing and locating resources, including using library search platforms and selfservice technologies, advice on sourcing materials outside of the local collection and explaining service policies in relation to the loaning and accessing of resources. 3. Facilitate ongoing access to locally held collections, including completing a range of administrative tasks such as searching for missing items, collecting reservations for customers, checking and emptying returns

2 bins. 4. Provide support across the department in the delivery of service by undertaking a range of other tasks, as identified and agreed as appropriate, including requesting the loan of items from other library collections, processing of new or withdrawal of old stock, reviewing of content on the service website for currency. 5. Work with wider learning services team, and Security teams to ensure that the library is a safe and secure place to study, and providing clear and effective handovers to Security as required. 6. Attend training courses as identified and agreed for appropriate development. 7. To ensure compliance with the Health and Safety Regulations and Equality and Diversity policy. This Job Description sets out the major duties associated with the stated purpose of the post. It should not be assumed that other duties undertaken within the department are excluded simply because they are not itemised. The duties of this post could vary from time to time as a result of new legislation, changes in technology or policy changes, in which case appropriate training may be given to enable the postholder to undertake the new duties. Selection Criteria Candidates will be assessed against the following essential/desirable attributes: EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS Essential Level 3 qualification (e.g. A-Level or equivalent) Desirable Undergraduate degree KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE SKILLS Working in a busy, customer focussed environment Administrative experience, including accurate record keeping and delivery of reports Excellent interpersonal skills to communicate, relate to and support people at all levels, including explaining more complex processes and procedures, and talking to groups. Ability to deliver excellent customer service, promoting the values of the University and Learning Services. Proficient IT users, including the MS Office, with ability to answer enquiries and provide support to our customers. The ability to work independently and as part of a team The ability to cope with pressure in a changing work environment, while maintaining a consistently high standard of accuracy The ability to remain calm in potential stressful situations. The ability to work within clear guidelines, and make referrals as appropriate. Good organisational skills. Working in a library (academic or public library) environment

Hours The post is 18hrs 15 mins per week Thursday and Friday Saturday (with 1 hour for lunch) You may also be offered extra hours outside of these detailed above to provide cover for colleagues.
