3 1 THE POSITION 1 Job Title: Reporting: Direct Reports: Commercial Development Director Chief Executive Head of Business Operations Head of Business Development Head of Project Bids team Head Office: Leeds Reporting to the Chief Executive you will have accountability for leading the organisation s commercial strategy with a key focus on the need to drive revenues and develop long term partnerships in line with corporate goals and values. The position is a fully rounded commercial role that will influence and work across all areas of the organisation, providing inspired and insightful leadership to capitalise on the organisation s excellent reputation and expanding service provision to maximise revenue streams and increase profitability. The role will be distinguished by its pragmatic customer oriented bias and its need to consistently generate relevant and appropriate solutions. The success of the individual will be determined by his/her ability to deliver sustainable and profitable growth Accountabilities To lead and develop the commercial engagement strategy through the analysis of both the internal and external business environment at a regional, national and international level. To drive the business development activities for the organisation and to lead on all new business partnerships, contracts and growth opportunities through effective client management. Work in partnership with existing and new employer groups to build sustainable long term relationships founded on mutual trust and respect. Develop an enhanced commercial understanding across the organisation to include better use of management information with a heavy emphasis on profitability. August
4 1 To ensure all contracts and any subcontracting arrangements comply with corporate and regulatory objectives and are of the highest quality and commercial standards. To lead on all contract negotiations to ensure commercial viability and effective risk management. To drive the organisation s enterprise culture both internally and externally and drive the need to continue to deliver high quality and innovative services that keep the organisation at the forefront of the market. To ensure the Chief Executive and Board are regularly and systematically apprised of market opportunities and business development activity. To manage the financial return for the commercial function and manage the commercial function s operational activities with a clear focus on value for money. Improving the attraction and retention of high calibre individuals in a changing business environment. Lead and promote initiatives with regional, national and international partners and institutions that are aligned to the organisation s corporate and social responsibility aims and position it for success in a rapidly changing and diverse market Corporate Accountabilities To promote the organisation s mission and strategic objectives and values with all external parties. Provide input and direction to the corporate strategy and be an active member of the senior leadership team. Contribute towards driving a culture of continuous improvement in order to meet stretching performance and financial targets, as well as through the implementation of lean technologies. Champion the organisation at all times and deputise for the Chief Executive and Colleagues as and when needed. To comply with the organisation s policies and procedures and regulatory requirements. 5 2 CANDIDATE PROFILE Knowledge & Experience As a Commercial Development Director your skills and qualifications will ideally include: Graduate calibre, possibly with a post graduate qualification in business and/or a professional affiliation. Significant business development management experience at a strategic level across either the public or private sectors within organisations of significant scale and complexity. A clear capacity to understand the commercial drivers across finance, business control, performance management, reporting, analysis, annual planning and organisational design to improve efficiencies and drive value. Have a proven track record of optimising business performance through the identification of new revenue streams regionally, nationally and internationally. Strong experience of working within a matrix management structure with the capacity to influence and negotiate with others to achieve outstanding outcomes. Clear capacity to focus on continuous improvements across the commercial function and drive a customer centric ethos through a challenging but positive influencing style. An inspirational leadership style that builds lasting and sustainable relationships internally and externally. Strong people and stakeholder management skills with exceptional written and verbal communication abilities. Rigorous analytical thinker with the ability to see issues strategically and at a practical level, both from the organisation and customer perspectives. Proactive team player with good organisational skills including the ability to prioritise multiple tasks and work to tight deadlines. Excellent interpersonal skills and proven track record of influencing senior business leaders. Passion for delivering high standards and creating business success, with a strong commitment to customer service. August
6 3 TERMS AND CONDITIONS 3 Salary At a level to meet with the expectations of exceptional candidates The basic salary is up to 95,000 per annum and is set at a level to meet with the expectations of exceptional candidates. There is an additional bonus of up to 10% of basic salary set against individual and organisational performance targets. Annual Holidays The holiday entitlement is 37 days per annum plus the eight recognised public holidays. Pension Scheme The successful candidate will have access to the organisation s pension scheme.
