1 EXPERIENTIAL EDUCATION What is Experiential Education? Experiential Education (ExEd) is a broad category of opportunities designed to help students define their educational goals and prepare for their careers by exploring the realities of the working world. Kennesaw State University students have two programs of Experiential Education within Career Services: * Please note these programs may not be available for your major. COOPERATIVE EDUCATION (Co-op) INTERNSHIP (Intern) Provides a longer-term developmental process and immersion at a company. DEFINED: employment that closely relates to a student s academic major with a minimum of two semester commitment. A student will have an opportunity to develop needed skills over a longer period of time, and will also be exposed to more of a company s yearly work cycle. Positions may be part-time or full-time, but no less than 10 hours per week. Positions MUST be paid. The program is available to Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors, and some graduate degree students. All students must have a declared major, a minimum of 30 undergraduate credits completed, and a 2.5 KSU adjusted GPA to be considered for participation. 1 3 credits can be earned each semester in the program. Hours Per Week Credit hrs...1 credit hrs...2 credits hrs...3 credits Provides a one semester, task-oriented experience. DEFINED: employment that closely relates to a student s academic major and is a one semester commitment. (Fall & Spring = 15 weeks / Summer = 8 weeks). The single semester time frame provides students with an opportunity to concentrate on higher level tasks during the experience. Positions may be part-time or full-time, but no less than 10 hours per week. Positions can be paid or non-paid, the preference varies from department to department at KSU. The program is available to Juniors, Seniors, and some graduate degree students. All students must have a declared major, but GPA and other requirements for participation vary by major credits can be earned in the program, HOWEVER maximum credits vary by major and semester. Hours Per Week Credit hrs credits hrs credits hrs credits (*Summer credit is reduced by 3 credits due to shortened time frame.) 3

3 Program Benefits: Experiential Education can Validate your career choice Provide a realistic view of the daily business operations of a company or organization Produce valuable work experience Provide a competitive edge in the job market Create networking opportunities Apply knowledge gained in the classroom Expand career options and possibilities Produce new skills and confidence Help establish short and long term career goals Open the door to new job opportunities! For additional information regarding program parameters, appropriate positions, academic requirements, and the application process for your major, please call The Career Services Center to set up an individual appointment with your Experiential Education Associate. 5

4 EXPERIENTIAL EDUCATION Where can you find an internship or co-op? Visit us at Register on OwlLink and apply to postings Attend career fairs Research professional journals, associations, and directories Utilize your network (faculty, friends, and relatives) Look through classifieds/job postings Contact organizations directly (cold call or send a letter) Use the Career Services Center resource library Internet resources Evaluating the internship or co-op: You may have heard internship horror stories of summers wasted. Don t let that happen to you! Some things to consider before accepting an internship: What is the organizational culture and management type? Is there a mentoring system in place? What is their ranking and prestige in the industry? What is your networking potential? Are there possibilities for full-time employment in the future? Making the most of your internship: 1. Be professional. Arrive at work on time (preferably a few minutes early) and resist the temptation to leave early. If you will miss any work, call in prior to your reporting time. Respect the employer s dress code. Use your time efficiently minimize breaks and avoid gossip and office politics. Never do homework on the job. Avoid making personal calls. 2. Do your best work. Ensure that all work assignments are accurate and completed in a timely manner. Take your position seriously, whether paid or unpaid, and when asked to perform menial tasks, do so without complaining. Supervisors need to know that you are capable of small tasks before they can trust you with more responsibility. At the end of the internship, always leave on good terms. Even if you have a bad experience, never burn your bridges, because you do not know when it could come back and hurt you! 3. Meet with your supervisor. If your supervisor does not seem to make time for you, don t take it personally. She/he may be busy with other work commitments. Take the initiative to schedule meetings with them. It s important to let your supervisor know what you have accomplished and to be able to ask questions. Be sure to get a final evaluation at the end of your internship. 4. Ask intelligent questions. Always remember that an internship is a learning experience for you. While the employer expects to get a certain level of work from you, you are not expected to know everything. Seek advice and raise questions whenever you encounter something that is not familiar to you. Be open-minded about new ideas and procedures remember that you don t know everything and that your professors didn t teach you everything. 5. Take initiative. Don t wait until someone hands you something to do. Seek opportunities to learn as much as you can! Complete small tasks quickly and ask for more challenging tasks. Don t turn down any assignment because you think it is beneath you. Remember, you are there to learn all aspects of the organization. However, you may volunteer to help with projects that interest you. 6. Network. As a young professional, your main interest should be meeting people who can provide you with information about your future profession. Build professional relationships with your supervisors and other managers in the organization and learn about their experiences. One way to do this is through informational interviewing. 5 OwlLINK & ON-CAMPUS INTERVIEWING OwlLink is the one-stop job search engine used at Kennesaw State University. You can upload resumes, cover letters, unofficial transcripts, and writing samples for employers to view. In addition, you can browse through hundreds of job openings, research employers, and manage your on-campus interview activity all in one place. Every KSU student has access to an OwlLink account at the beginning of their first semester. Your username and password are both set to your KSU ID number (the one with all the zeros); you have the option of changing your password once you have activated your account. Once your account is activated, you will be asked to complete a profile; this academic profile needs to be updated at least once a semester to ensure accuracy. It is your profile that is used to match you with potential job opportunities, so if the profile is not accurate, you may not be able to apply for the position. Once your profile is activated, you can upload your resumes and other supporting documents for employers. All documents must be approved by CSC staff: this process may take up to 48 business hours depending on the number of documents in the queue for approval. After your documents have been approved, you can start applying for jobs through the system. Some of the positions listed are on-campus interviews (OCI) meaning the employer will interview in the Career Services Center or another location on campus. If the position has the word TYPE under the location of the job, then it is for an on-campus interview. For more information about signing up for on-campus interviews, please see the Career Services Center website. In addition, be sure to review the on-campus interview policies before signing up. Information about employer events is also in OwlLink. Information sessions are workshops conducted by employers on their company or the types of jobs they have to offer. Information tables are informal events, where employers will provide information about their company and their job opportunities at a variety of locations around campus.
