JOB PURPOSE: The role holder s main purpose is to maximise the progression to graduate level jobs and further study by University of Chester students, to ensure that the University continues to perform well in national measures of employability, and to lead the institutional strategy for ensuring these outcomes. The role includes leading the design, planning and delivery of initiatives and interventions which will contribute to enhanced student and graduate employability. These include: curriculum-based,

2 programme-specific career development learning, extra-curricular employability initiatives (e.g. Chester Difference Award, UniJob), effective links with employers, and opportunities for quality part-time work and paid placements, and the provision of up-to-date and relevant online resources to students, graduates, academic colleagues, and employers. 7. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The University has invested significantly in its Careers and Employability provision, and the current department consists of twenty-three staff based at two dedicated Careers and Employability Centres (Chester and Warrington) providing a service that is available to all students on all programmes, and at all of the University s sites. Careers and Employability supports students and graduates through; 1) provision of an accessible, personalised expert service offering information, advice and guidance; 2) access to employers including opportunities to gain workplace experience such as work shadowing and on-campus and other part-time employment 3) regular customised career management skills sessions within the curriculum delivered in partnership with academic colleagues; and 4) provision of up-to-date, accurate and extensive information on the graduate labour market. The service has MATRIX accreditation (reaccredited in April 2013). The Careers and Employability team was also shortlisted for an AGCAS Employer Engagement Award in the Autumn of Careers and Employability Vision and Mission Vision: Our vision is of a University experience providing a variety of employabilityenhancing experiences; through the curriculum; through employer contact and through tailored group and individual information, advice and guidance Mission: Careers and Employability aims to deliver a service which is inclusive, impartial, welcoming, informed and tailored to students personal goals and aspirations, to enable them to develop as individuals and contribute to the business and community in which they will live and work 8. WORK PERFORMED AND/OR KEY RESULT AREAS: 8.1 Communicating Effectively ensure that the team communicates the range of services offered to students and staff, and to prospective students and their parents at open and applicant days. respond, orally and in writing, to requests for management information from internal staff and external stakeholders communicate to staff the processes and procedures necessary for the effective operation of the team conduct recruitment and selection interviews, personal review and development (PRDP) meetings and one-to-one meetings with team leaders, and chair regular meetings of the Team Leaders Forum. write and present papers at committees and other meetings both within the University and externally contribute to professional conferences both within the University and externally in networks such as AGCAS, ASET etc..

3 coordinate the Department s contribution to University publications such as the prospectus, guides for new students, and the University s Annual Review prepare the annual report to the University Council on First Destinations (DLHE), communicate both orally and in writing with the Vice-Chancellor and with members of SMT on matters of graduate employability and league tables, including overseeing the production of annual Faculty Employability Reports 8.2 Leadership and Working Collaboratively Develop and set goals annually in accordance with the University s business planning cycle, and ensure that individual goals and strengths identified in the annual PRDP process are consistent with, and contribute to, the goals of the Department maintain effective relationships with key internal partners, such as Student Support and Guidance, Marketing, Recruitment and Admission, Corporate Communications, and the Chester Students Union, among others. motivate and lead the team to ensure that the service is delivered to very high standards across all University sites. devise and lead team meetings and staff development days in order to build a common sense of purpose. supporting and advising the Career Consultant team to enable effective interaction with academic departments through the well-developed system of partnership agreements with each academic department, and through the Careers and Employability Link Tutor network. establish effective relationships with other departments of the University to ensure that students receive the best service through appropriate crossreferral. take the lead on a shared approach to employer liaison by building and maintaining an effective working relationship with employer-facing colleagues across the University. contribute to the wider management of the University through reporting to the relevant Pro-Vice-Chancellor and SMT, leading on the University s Employability Strategy, and being an active contributor to the University s Student Experience Committee. 8.3 Liaison and Networking the role holder is required to, via telephone, and face-to-face meetings: lead the Department in frequent interaction with academic departments in order to ensure delivery of career management skills programmes to students, to further embed such programmes within the curriculum. lead the Department in strategic interaction with other academic support departments (Student Support and Guidance, Marketing, Recruitment and Admissions, Corporate Communications, Registry Services, LIS, LTI, AQE) in order to develop and deliver integrated, high quality provision of services. lead the Department in strategic interaction with HRM Services regarding recruitment and selection, and other staffing matters. represent the institution in regular interaction with heads of services in other HEIs, regionally, nationally and internationally, for the purposes of sharing good practice and benchmarking.

4 represent the Department in internal networks established for the purpose of quality enhancement of key processes. as necessary, lead internal quality review panels. 8.4 Delivering a High Quality Standard of Service The role holder has responsibility for: leading the team in the setting and achievement of agreed standards for careers and employability work with students and graduates based on factors including: national performance indicators; the QAA code of practice and guidelines, benchmarking with other HEIs, and standards set by professional bodies (e.g. AGCAS). ensuring continuous quality improvement through the annual operating statement and business planning process and through establishing and overseeing systems for the collection and analysis of student and employer feedback. reporting regularly to SMT on the performance of the team against agreed targets and strategic objectives, in line with the University s Corporate Plan. 8.5 Effective Decision Making The role holder has responsibility for: making independent decisions about the method of operation of the Department and the introduction of new initiatives. identifying and following up on potential collaborative and externally funded projects. chairing recruitment and selection panels for staff being appointed to the Department. offering advice to enable others to make decisions, for example advising SMT on implications of graduate destinations, and advising Deans and Heads of Department on graduate destinations in their subject area in order to inform curriculum design. managing the provision of responses to regular and ad hoc requests for statistical data externally, and management information internally, and reviewing such data as appropriate to inform the development of the Careers and Employability Service in response to University objectives. 8.6 Planning and Organising Self and Others The role holder is responsible for: managing the annual budget and for generating an agreed proportion of external funding. determining the staffing structure and for securing approval for new and replacement posts. planning the allocation of resources in the longer term to meet anticipated demand, from students, academic departments, and employers. preparing the business plan for the Department on an annual basis. 8.7 Innovation and Improvement (Effective Problem Solving) balance a budget against priorities and resources across campuses. lead the team in devising innovative approaches to service delivery. These may be self-initiated or in response to a request from the Vice-Chancellor or

5 SMT; current examples include the Chester Difference Award for extracurricular activities, and the Chester Employability Fund to support the employability goals of the University s Access agreement. identify the need for new guidelines and procedures in the operation of the Department and to devise and implement them identify internal and external partners for funding and collaboration. 8.8 Analysis and Research keep abreast of current research in careers and employability, and lead the University in its understanding of graduate employability, and how it relates to the University s Mission, Vision, and Corporate Plan. determine methods of collection and analysis of data relating to usage of the service, graduate destinations by subject, and labour market intelligence, and to interpret this data to a range of audiences including students and graduates, academic colleagues, SMT and external organisations. ensure that the annual HESA Destination of Leavers Survey is conducted effectively. This includes directing the Careers Research and Information Manager in the recruitment and training of telephone researchers and devising and implementing a quality checking protocol. interpreting the DLHE data to the Vice-Chancellor and SMT and for advising SMT on the management of the impact of the secondary data emerging in league tables. 8.9 Sensory and Physical Demands The role holder will be required to: operate a standard computer and other office equipment work across University sites 8.10 Work Environment be office-based but travel to different University sites and to conferences and meetings nationally, and possibly internationally, on University business. secure and design the use of suitable office space to suit both students and staff and in accordance with health and safety guidelines. ensure that the lone worker policy is adhered to, especially in late evening opening and at Warrington. be responsible for all aspects of Health and Safety for staff in the department, as the overall line manager of Careers and Employability Pastoral Care and Welfare deal sensitively with personal issues which may affect members of the team in the workplace. provide guidance and support to team members when they are working with vulnerable students, e.g. those wishing to withdraw from their course, or those who have personal issues affecting their ability to get a job. ensure that all members of the team have the knowledge and training, including knowledge of referral systems, to support students with specific needs in their career planning

6 deal with any performance, absence or welfare issues that arise within the department, in line with University policies and procedures Team Development meet new starters and ensure that they experience a full departmental and institutional induction. ensure that the PDRP process is carried out and personally reviews senior staff within the Department. S/he is responsible for making decisions on staff training needs based on the outcomes of PRDPs, and for ensuring that individual objectives are compatible with the Department s business plan and Annual Operating Statement objectives. plan and lead regular staff development days and full team meetings in order to focus on and improve aspects of professional practice and to keep staff informed of departmental and wider institutional developments. ensure that, over time, staff are progressing in their specialist area(s), supported by appropriate training and experience, and to set standards and monitor performance, taking necessary action if standards are not being met. contribute to the wider regional and national network of professional development in HE career guidance both by his/her own efforts and by encouraging members of the team to contribute Teaching and Learning Support ensure that timetabled careers provision is offered to all undergraduate programmes, from induction week. lead the team in the design and delivery of innovative approaches to careers education, information and guidance, in accordance with the QAA Code of Practice. 9 UNIVERSITY OF CHESTER TERMS & CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT CAREERS AND EMPLOYABILITY DIRECTOR OF CAREERS AND EMPLOYABILITY SALARY SCALE University Scale E1, points 47-49, 51,702-54,841 per annum payable monthly in arrears. RESIDENCE REQUIREMENT It is a requirement of this post that within 12 months of appointment, the post-holder should live within a 30 mile radius or within a one hour travelling time by public transport from the University. HOURS OF WORK 36.5 hours per week, to be worked as follows: Monday to Thursday Friday 9.00am pm 9.00am pm (less a one hour lunch break each day) A flexible approach to work will be required as there may be occasions when it would be necessary for you to work additional hours as dictated by the workload. HOLIDAY ENTITLEMENT 22 days per annum (pro-rata during the commencement and cessation years), rising to 27 days after five years' continuous service. Two extra statutory days per annum during the Christmas period. PROFESSIONAL CONTRACT The successful applicant may opt to be employed on a professional contract. Those employed on professional contracts have a holiday entitlement of 35 days per annum. As a minimum they are expected to be present during the core hours of the role, as outlined above, and they are not entitled to participate in the department s flexi-time scheme. MEDICAL EXAMINATION Successful candidates will be required to complete an Occupational Health questionnaire, and may be required to undergo a medical examination. ESSENTIAL CERTIFICATES Short-listed candidates will be asked to bring to interview, proof of qualifications as outlined on the Job Description and Person Specification provided. Upon appointment, copies of essential certificates will be required by HRM Services. PENSION SCHEME The University operates two pension schemes for support staff: The default scheme is the Higher Education Defined Contribution Scheme (HEDCS), which is administered by Friends Life.

10 The Cheshire Local Government Pension Scheme, to which the University is an admitted body. All support staff are entitled to participate in one of these schemes. Some staff will be automatically enrolled into a scheme, depending on their age and earnings, but if they do not wish to remain a member of the scheme, they will be entitled to opt out after enrolment.
