1 Center for International Human Resource Studies in collaboration with: Human Resource Management Paper Development Workshop 26 February 2016 UQ Business School Brisbane, Australia Guest Speakers: Kate Hutchings, Griffith University & Yiqiong Li, UQ Organized by: Elaine Farndale, Associate Professor of Human Resource Management, Center Director: Center for International Human Resource Studies, Penn State University, USA Charmine Härtel, Professor of Human Resource Management and Organizational Development, UQ Business School Maria Beamond, PhD Candidate, UQ Business School
2 CIHRS-UQ HRM PDW 2016 Following the success of the 1st Paper Development Workshop held at the University of Queensland in March 2014, we are pleased to announce that we will be holding this event again on 26 February UQ Business School will host the event, which is aimed to attract scholars, particular junior scholars, doing research in the field of human resource management who are seeking guidance on publishing their papers in top-level academic journals. A keynote address will be delivered by Professor Kate Hutchings (Griffith University), focusing on her research on expatriation and emerging economies.this year, there will also be the opportunity to attend a practitioner workshop on 25 February 2016, focusing on bridging academia and practice on the topic of HRM in emerging markets. How the Workshop will Work The primary activities of the workshop are paper development roundtables and panel discussions, with one of each in both the morning and the afternoon. The paper development roundtable sessions are intended to be developmental conversations among a small group of scholars led by a mentor. The panel discussions are intended to stimulate a broader collective conversation. These will be led by workshop mentors and include capturing the key insights of participants from the small group conversations. There will also be ample time for informal conversations among all workshop participants during meals and breaks. Each paper will be assigned to one of the paper development roundtable sessions (either morning or afternoon). Roundtables will have focal papers discussed by a small group of people that includes the paper authors, an assigned mentor, and assigned participants and will last 1 hour 45 minutes. The number of concurrent small group roundtable discussions will be determined by the number of participants. The goal of each session is to provide feedback to help authors move their paper toward publication. The expectation is that everyone will have read the paper abstracts for their sessions in advance and come prepared with constructive comments. During the session, members should first briefly introduce themselves and then present their papers (time 5-7 minutes). Authors should begin their turn with a short oral presentation - no powerpoints, but you should prepare a maximum one-page handout identifying your target journal for the paper and the key areas you would like feedback on to help roundtable members understand how they can be most helpful. The mentor on the paper will follow with brief comments and first questions and then will facilitate the conversation. One session participant should volunteer to take on the role of designated time-keeper to ensure that each paper is given a fair amount of allotted time. A second session participant should volunteer to take on the role of note-taker to help capture the feedback for the authors of the paper that is being discussed.
3 There will be the opportunity for workshop participants to follow up with their assigned mentor on the feedback received on their papers after the workshop within a two month period of time following the workshop to help with the process of journal submission. Who should attend This PDW is designed primarily for junior academic staff or PhD students looking to improve their publishing skills in the HRM field. Ideally scholars will be researching aspects of human resource management with an international dimension, such as exploring issues of global talent management, differences in people management across countries (comparative HRM), or emerging markets and HRM. However, papers on more general HRM topics of interest to an international audience will also be considered (e.g., diversity management, occupational health and safety, labour relations, change management, neo-institutional or critical perspectives of people management policy and practices). How to apply to attend Extended abstracts or full papers can be submitted for review. At a minimum, abstracts (in English) should be 750-1,000 words and, at a maximum, full papers should be 8-10,000 words (as per Academy of Management Journal submission style). Both should contain at least: The aims and intended contributions of the paper an outline description of the theoretical framework and concepts; the research design and approach to data analysis (where applicable); the key findings, along with their theoretical and practical significance. All submissions must be original and should not have been previously accepted for publication in a journal. All submissions will be blind reviewed. Please submit in Word (.doc or.docx) or PDF format (excluding any author identifying information) to the following address: cihrs@psu.edu. There is no fee for attendance. Sponsorship to cover travel costs for the best submitted paper may be awarded. Deadline for all submissions: 18 December 2015
