ORGANISATION CHART: Head of Operations: Fitness Facilities Coordinator: Sport & Recreation Assistants Fitness Facilities Supervisors x 3 Lifeguards Fitness Instructors 6. JOB PURPOSE: The role holder will be required to work flexibly, their contracted hours, between 7am and 10pm Monday to Sunday. The Sport and Recreation Assistant assists in the day to day running of the Sport and Recreation Facilities at the Chester Campus. The Sport and Recreation Assistant is vital to maintaining high standards of customer care and customer satisfaction, the role also involves administration and clerical (reception) tasks as well as facility maintenance and cleaning. The role holder will be required to carry out lifeguard duties on a regular basis. 7. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Sport and Recreation Assistant is based in the Swimming Pool/ Fitness Centre, and works within various facilities both indoor and outdoor. Facilities include two outdoor tennis courts, Squash courts, full floodlight Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) Hockey pitch and Sports hall.

WORK PERFORMED AND/OR KEY RESULT AREAS: 8.1 Communicating Effectively The role holder will be required to communicate daily with staff, students, and visitors, community groups and teams both verbally and in written format regarding Sports Facilities. Following departmental policies and procedures, the role holder will be required to explain services to customers. 8.2 Leadership and Working Collaboratively The role holder will be working as part of a team within the Sport and Recreation Department to ensure that a high standard of service is provided to all users of the Sports Facilities. 8.3 Liaison and Networking Not a requirement of the role. 8.4 Delivering a High Quality Standard of Service The role holder will work as part of a team in the day to day operation of the University s sport and recreation facilities in terms of security, cleanliness, safety of customers, emergency procedures and the campus sport and recreation programmes. Setting up and breaking down of sport and recreation equipment prior to and after use, following University Health and Safety procedures. The role holder will carry out maintenance and cleaning of all sport and recreation equipment. The role holder will keep accurate records of faults, for example, wear and tear, lighting; reporting appropriate repair work when necessary to the Fitness Facilities Co-ordinator. The role holder will conduct regular pool tests. Swimming Pool procedure will be followed for chemical or hygiene protocol are correct and at a safe level through plant room maintenance (e.g. backwash/topping up chemicals safely). The role holder will assist in ensuring that all customers participate safely at all times and adhere to all rules and regulations reporting when appropriate to the Fitness Facilities Co-ordinator. The role holder will be required to behave in a professional manner with a strong customer focus. 8.5 Effective Decision Making The role holder will be required to work independently using their own initiative and make independent decisions associated with the given task. The role holder will be required to work in line with University policies and procedures. The role holder will be required to take part in a monthly team meeting and contribute to collaborative decisions made by the team under the guidance of the Fitness Facilities Co-ordinator.
3 8.6 Planning and Organising Self and Others The role holder will be required to complete tasks to a given plan provided by the Fitness Facilities Co-ordinator. For example: priorities for the day. 8.7 Innovation and Improvement (Effective Problem Solving) The role holder will be required, on occasion, to work independently using their own initiative and solve standard day to day problems recognising when a problem should be referred on. 8.8 Analysis and Research The role holder will be required to record basic information, for example, water testing results and facility usage. 8.9 Sensory and Physical Demands Due to the nature of the work the role holder should be physically fit and able to assist in the moving and operating of large and heavy items of equipment. The role holder will be required to attend Lifeguard training once a month in order to keep their National Pool Lifeguard Qualification current Work Environment The role holder will be required to work in various locations both inside and outside. The Facilities are of varying age and condition. The environment will generally be pleasant and clean. The role holder will be issued with, and required to wear, a uniform along with the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) Pastoral Care and Welfare The role holder will be required to show sensitivity and initiate appropriate action, referring on to the appropriate person Team Development The role holder will occasionally be required to act as a mentor to new staff working in the same role as them Teaching and Learning Support This is not a requirement of the role Knowledge and Experience Please see person specification General To undertake any other duties commensurate with your grade, and/or hours of work, as may reasonably be required of you. 4 Job Title: Sport & Recreation Assistant PERSON SPECIFICATION Department: Facilities Criteria / Method of identification Qualifications: Hold current RLSS NPLQ qualification or equivalent NVQ level 2 or equivalent Relevant pool plant qualification First Aid at work certificate Proven Experience: Worked within a Swimming Pool environment/ Centre Conducted pool tests/pool plant maintenance Delivering academic and service excellence: Health and safety knowledge Worked within a customer facing role Managing self and inspiring others: Flexible approach Working together: Worked as part of a team Organisational and stakeholder awareness: Ability to effectively and clearly communicate Interview Requirements are those, without which, a candidate would not be able to do the job. Applicants who have not clearly demonstrated in their application that they possess the essential requirements will normally be rejected at the shortlisting stage. Requirements are those that would be useful for the post holder to possess and will be considered when more than one applicant meets the essential requirements. Method of identification is where the selection panel will match the candidate s skills and abilities to the required criteria outlined (i.e. application form, interview, test).
5 UNIVERSITY OF CHESTER TERMS & CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT FACILITIES MANAGEMENT SPORTS & RECREATION ASSISTANT - 15 HOURS PER WEEK SALARY SCALE University Scale OS3, points 7-10, 15,814-17,184 pro rata, per annum payable monthly in arrears. RESIDENCE REQUIREMENT It is a requirement of this post that within 12 months of appointment, the post-holder should live within a 30 mile radius or within a one hour travelling time by public transport from the University. HOURS OF WORK 15 hours per week to be worked flexibly over 7 days, not working more than 5 consecutive days. A flexible approach to work will be required as there may be occasions when it would be necessary for you to work additional hours as dictated by the workload. HOLIDAY ENTITLEMENT 22 days per annum (pro-rata during the commencement and cessation years), rising to 27 days after five years' continuous service. Two extra statutory days per annum during the Christmas period. MEDICAL EXAMINATION Successful candidates will be required to complete an Occupational Health questionnaire, and may be required to undergo a medical examination. ESSENTIAL CERTIFICATES Short-listed candidates will be asked to bring to interview, proof of qualifications as outlined on the Job Description and Person Specification provided. Upon appointment, copies of essential certificates will be required by HRM Services. PENSION SCHEME The University operates two pension schemes for support staff: The default scheme is the Higher Education Defined Contribution Scheme (HEDCS), which is administered by Friends Life. The Cheshire Local Government Pension Scheme, to which the University is an admitted body. All support staff are entitled to participate in one of these schemes. Some staff will be automatically enrolled into a scheme, depending on their age and earnings, but if they do not wish to remain a member of the scheme, they will be entitled to opt out after enrolment.
