1 JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Grade: Responsible to: Hours per week: Data Analyst 7 Systems, Development & Reporting Manager A minimum of 36 hours per week to meet the requirements of the post. Main Purpose of the Role The Data Analyst is part of the College Management Information Services team which is comprised of a number of sub-teams, covering admissions, data, reporting and exams. Woking alongside the other Data Analyst and working closely with the Systems, Development and Reporting Manager you will develop a range of reports using SQL Management Studio and SQL Server Reporting Services to meet the College s internal and external reporting requirements developing a range of self-service reports. The role is fundamental to the process of ensuring the timely and accurate provision of management information, extracting data from a range of college databases using SQL. Principal Accountabilities 1. Agree formats and development principals with the Systems Development and Reporting Manager. Preserve effective quality control in respect of design, test and build of reports, with great attention to detail and strong analytical skills. 2. Maintain and further develop the production of core and ad-hoc reports for use by the College and external clients such as funding bodies, ensuring that the definitions and processes are adopted to support an accurate and responsive service. 3. Provide information in a variety of visual formats including statistical reports, graphs and diagrams for use by internal and external clients ensuring the information presented is clear and unambiguous. 4. Take a proactive approach in the creation and definition of information and reports, liaising with clients to accurately determine requirements, checking compliance to original request and undertaking comparison analysis for accuracy and to meet agreed delivery deadlines. 5. Provide client support in the use of information systems and reporting tools, ensuring that documentation and training are organised and delivered for all release information and/or reporting systems. Explain complex topics in a simple, straightforward way to non-technical users. 6. Manage requests for ad hoc reports, clearly identifying priority work. 7. Systematically run reports, ensuring timely delivery to clients.
2 8. Liaise with software suppliers to troubleshoot bugs and issues. 9. Ensure that personal skills are kept in line with the latest technology advancements. 10. Participate in any other activities as required as a member of the Systems Development Reporting Team as determined by the Systems, Development and Reporting Manager or the Director of MIS. General Accountabilities 1. Lead, promote and support the development of the College s Equality and Diversity policies, procedures and practices as they relate to students and staff. 2. Develop effective contact, liaison and working relationships with colleagues in the College and other bodies as appropriate. 3. Support the development of the learning organisation and facilitate cultural change. 4. To engage in professional development and networking to ensure that professional and strategic contributions are up-to-date. 5. Complying with the College Health and Safety Policy and all relevant health and safety requirements. 6. Participating actively in the performance management scheme, agreeing objectives, attending reviews and undertaking professional development as required. 7. Continued development and training for this post will be identified as part of the performance management process and where appropriate external training will be provided at the discretion of the Director of MIS. 10. As the college is a multi-campus site, flexibility and willingness to work across all sites is required. This job description reflects the post, as at (20 January 2016) but may be amended from time to time following consultation with the post holder. Please note: The person appointed to this post will, from time to time, have contact with students, many of whom are under eighteen year of age, and some under sixteen years, a number of whom may have moderate to severe learning difficulties and/or disabilities. As such, the postholder will be required to have an Enhanced DBS check along with other mandatory checks. As the College is a multi-campus site, flexibility and willingness to work across sites will be required. This job description reflects the requirements of the post at (month and year - date the Job Description and Personal Specification is written) but may be amended from time to time following consultation with the post holder. 4 PERSONAL SPECIFICATION: Data Analyst Experience and qualifications Knowledge Essential 1. An IT related qualification at Level 3 or higher, including Relational databases. 2. Excellent data analysis skills. 3. A good understanding of the SQL language with an ability to write SQL statements with clear and easily readable code. 4. Experience of Data warehousing techniques, query optimisation, multi data source reporting. 5. Knowledge of Visual Basic or equivalent programming language. 6. Understanding of the Data Protection Act and the impact this may have when developing reports. Desirable A degree or equivalent Qualification in an Information Systems related subject or a Microsoft SQL Server BI certification Ability to write UPDATE, INSERT and DELETE statements. Experience with MS SQL Server Management Studio and working with SQL Server. Experience developing SSRS reports using Reporting Services and Visual Studio. Ability to develop reusable code such as by developing SQL table valued functions and stored procedures. Some development experience with a modern language such as C# or PHP. A good understanding of Microsoft Access and Microsoft Excel. Knowledge of FE and HE funding methodologies. Experience of working in a Further Education environment.

Proven track record of working with customers to identify accurate and efficient solutions to their requirements and develop solutions using own initiative. 11. Proven track record of producing accurate work under pressure and to tight deadlines. 12. Excellent administration and organisational skills. 13. Excellent problem solving, technical and analytical skills particularly in the context of rapidly changing technology. 14. Good project management skills and the ability to work as part of a team. 15. Proven ability to work independently and be self-motivated to produce accurate work to tight deadlines. 16. Articulate and able to communicate professionally with colleagues at all levels, both internally and externally. 17. Ability to work as part of a team and support colleagues. 18. Ability to cope with a demanding workload. 19. Prepared to take and implement decisions and accept responsibility for own actions. 20. Self motivated. 21. Ability and willingness to travel between sites and elsewhere if required. 22. Ability to work flexibly (some evening duty is required) to meet the needs of the College.
