TOP 10 MYTHS: The Key to a Successful Safety Incentive Program Sean Roark PromoPros, Inc.

Common Arguments against Incentive Programs It s like we re giving someone something for nothing! Why wouldn t people want to be safe anyway? Isn t it part of their job? It didn t work when we tried it before.

Negatively Enforced Incentive (Decentive) Programs If morale does not improve, the beatings will resume immediately. In other words Do it our way, or else!

TOP TEN MYTHS about planning a Safety Incentive Program 10. Cash is King! Why bother with Merchandise? No administration headache!

TOP TEN MYTHS about planning a Safety Incentive Program 9. Gift Cards are the Ideal Motivator! The perfect answer to cash! Buy a bunch, keep em in a drawer!

TOP TEN MYTHS about planning a Safety Incentive Program 8. Everybody likes a Baseball Cap! (Polo Shirt/ Flashlight) I can get that stuff whenever I need it! Why pay for something fancy?

TOP TEN MYTHS about planning a Safety Incentive Program 7. This thing will promote itself Everybody likes hats! I d rather spend more on the employees than throw it at posters, brochures and catalogs

TOP TEN MYTHS about planning a Safety Incentive Program 6. Who needs help? Not me! I m the expert! I ve done a million of these Punch it up as I see fit My secretary can handle who gets what and any questions

TOP TEN MYTHS about planning a Safety Incentive Program 5. It s my program I ll make up my own rules! Too much structure s a downer. We ll make up the rules as we go along.

TOP TEN MYTHS about planning a Safety Incentive Program 4. Let s take care of everyone at once Team Safety is easier to measure If everyone in the department is safe all month, I ll buy them a sandwich (maybe a beer!)

TOP TEN MYTHS about planning a Safety Incentive Program 3. These programs discourage reporting If employees lose awards for reporting, why won t they just keep it to themselves? OSHA will jump all over me

TOP TEN MYTHS about planning a Safety Incentive Program 2. I ll save money by giving something BIG! Have a drawing for one big thing! Everyone will be excited! Maybe I ll win!

TOP TEN MYTHS about planning a Safety Incentive Program 1. This is MY incentive program HANDS OFF! Don t let other managers screw it up. HR and Sales get your own!

LESSONS LEARNED from Debunked Myths about Safety Incentive Programs Use Merchandise Make rewards scalable Engage a reputable Incentive Specialist Carefully design program rules Promote your program Be open to program expansion Formulate and evaluate results

Why Do These Programs Work?

The Logic Behind the Magic Behavior can be changed when there is a desire, ability, and a clear vision of the expected standard. Incentive awards motivate because of an emotional buy-in by the participant. Individual and team performance is enhanced when incentive programs are utilized. Findings of study released by Society of Incentive and Travel Executives (SITE) Foundation: Only 8% of employees surveyed said they would have achieved their goals without an incentive program. Tangible incentives increase work performance by an average of 22%. Incentive programs aimed at individual workers increase performance by 27%. Programs aimed at teams increase performance by 45%. Long-term incentives are more than twice as powerful as short-term (44% gain vs 20% gain). SITE study as referenced in Occupational Hazards, June 2002 edition.

Midstream Firm Learns Safety is No Accident! Client: Houston-based refinery/pipeline company Issue: OSHA Incident Rate 1.34 Answer: Point-based Safety Incentive Program established Aggressively promoted program Safety Wear integrated into online program First Year Results: Incident Rate reduced to.59 (over 200% improvement) ROI of over 300%

A question

Why would you seek out experts to achieve these strategic goals? To provide adequate workplace Safety systems To improve work environment To attract, nurture & retain great employees To avoid fines by compliance To prevent accidents & lost time by encouraging best practices

The Answer is Simple Important goals are reached (legal, financial & relational) Company runs more smoothly Morale is improved Money is saved in spades! The better you are at accomplishing these goals the higher the rewards!

An Employee Safety Incentive Program A Change Management Tool to Instill Best Practices. Help them WANT to be better!
