1 Change Management Practitioner Programme overview Dealing with change and more importantly, the impact of change is a high priority for all organizations. The Change Management Certification has been developed by APMG in partnership with the Change Management Institute (CMI), an independent, global professional association of change managers. Together they have developed a professional body of knowledge for the discipline of change management. This body of knowledge now provides an independent benchmark for the professional knowledge expected of an effective change manager. APMG s refreshed Change Management certification is fully aligned with the change management body of knowledge. The new syllabus samples a wide range of knowledge regarding the theory and practice of change management. By passing both Foundation and Practitioner examinations candidates will have acquired the knowledge needed to receive CMI s ACM (Foundation) accreditation. After completing Change Projects, demonstrating the experience requirements, candidates can apply to become an Accredited Change Master with the Change Management Institute. Who is it for? This programme is designed to provide the Change Management capability for those people that will be involved in managing change projects that will impact people. This would include those acting as Project Managers and the Department managers / Team leaders that will be impacted by the changes The APMG Practitioner accreditation is widely regarded as the expected competency level required of Business Change Managers in Organizations. Consequently we run the Programme to enable attendees to achieve the APMG Practitioner accreditation. It is a natural partner to the APMG PRINCE2 Practitioner accreditation. Programme Content Participants can either just attend the 4 workshops to gain the capability required to successfully manage change, or they can attend the workshops and sit the Foundation and Practitioner exams to gain the Practitioner accreditation. The Programme comprises of four one day workshops which explore the theories of how change impacts on and is affected by 4 areas; 1. Change and the Organisation Workshop Understanding the organisational styles and the type of change required o Morgan s metaphors o Organizational culture o Emergent change Understanding the change models available to manage change o Lewin s three stage model o Kotter s eight stage model o Systems thinking (Senge)

2 o Bridges transition stages Be able to apply within a particular scenario the models/tools and approaches relating to organizational change; o Understanding organizational culture and applying the most relevant implementation approach for the change initiative o Understanding when and how to use a planned change and an emergent change approach. o Understand the roles and responsibilities required that a change manager needs to ensure are resourced effectively. 2. Change and the Individual Workshop Understand the concepts, principles, approaches and models associated with individual response to change; o Maslow s hierarchy of needs o Satisfaction and growth (Hertzberg) o Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI ) o Schein survival and learning anxieties o Kolb learning cycle stages Be able to apply within a particular scenario the models/tools and approaches relating to individual change o Factors likely to affect the motivation of individuals engaged in change and how to encourage their involvement in change. o Individual responses to a change situation approaches to maximise engagement. 3. Communication and Stakeholder Engagement Workshop Understand the principles, approaches and models relating to communication and stakeholder engagement; o Stakeholder identification and segmentation o Stakeholder radar o Principles of people focussed communication to encourage engagement o Key elements in developing a communications strategy for the change initiative. Be able to apply within a particular scenario the models/tools and approaches relating to communication and stakeholder engagement; o Understand how to use stakeholder engagement during the change initiative o Understand how to increase communication effectiveness to encourage engagement. o Understand how to implement a communications strategy for the change initiative. 4. Change Practice Workshop Understand the principles, approaches and models relating to change management practice o McKinsey 7S model o Beckhard and Harris Change Formula

3 o Tuckman stages of team development o Developing highly effective teams (Glasser & Glasser) o Anticipating and addressing resistance to change o Change levers that can sustain change. Be able to apply within a particular scenario the models/tools and approaches relating to change management practice; o Understand how to assess the impact of change, likely cause of resistance and identify actions to address them. o Understand how to assess team effectiveness and work with individuals/teams to improve motivation and performance. o Understand the change management actions to sustain the adoption of change. Achieving the Practitioner Qualification Candidates attend the four workshops and prepare for the Foundation and Practitioner exams with the Course Manual and handbook. The Foundation exam is scheduled 1 week after the last workshop. o 40 minute exam, closed book multiple choice paper, with a total of 50 questions. o Candidates need 50% to pass to enable them to take the Practitioner exam. The Change Management Practitioner exam will be scheduled 1 week after the Foundation exam. Practitioner confirms the candidates understanding of the complexities of change. The Practitioner Exam is a 2.5-hour multiple choice paper. o It is open book and comprises four questions based on a given scenario. There are four sections with 20 marks per question. 1. Change and the individual 2. Change and the organization 3. Communication and stakeholder engagement 4. Change practice o Candidates must score 50% to pass. Both the Foundation and Practitioner level certifications are based on The Effective Change Manager s Handbook which is based on the body of knowledge required by the Change Management Institute. This book is supplied with the course. By passing both Foundation and Practitioner examinations candidates will have acquired the knowledge needed to receive CMI s ACM (Foundation) accreditation. After completing Change Projects, demonstrating the experience requirements, candidates can apply to become an Accredited Change Master with the Change Management Institute.
