2 About Ascend Greater Washington DC Chapter The Greater Washington DC Ascend network is a chapter of the is the largest, non-profit Pan- Asian membership organization for business professionals in North America. Established in 2005, Ascend s network includes 60,000+ senior executives, professionals, and MBA/undergraduate students involved in its 50+ chapters. It offers robust professional development and career enhancement programs designed to cultivate Pan-Asian talent. 7 Pinnacle The Pan-Asian Corporate Board Member Initiative Desired Outcome: Create a platform to support Pan-Asians currently on Corporate Boards and develop candidates for future Board service Objectives: Increase pipeline and placement of qualified Pan-Asian corporate board candidates Educate and support Pan-Asians to become successful members of Corporate Boards and Corporate executive management Partner with corporations to identify and develop pipeline of current and prospective Pan-Asian candidates. Educate major decision makers to invest in the development and advancement of Pan-Asians for boards. Produce research/thought pieces on the current representation of Pan-Asians on boards
8 Advanced Leadership Program (ALP) In collaboration with the Stanford Graduate School of Business, Ascend created the Advanced Leadership Program (ALP) a first of its kind executive program for high-achieving Pan- Asian leaders. The Stanford Advanced Leadership Program (ALP): Accelerates the development of global business leadership skills of senior executives at U.S. companies Strives to address the disparity between the number of Pan-Asians in the corporate workforce and those in executive positions Includes participants who are mostly high level Pan-Asians 8
9 Executive Insight Series TM (EIS) EXECUTIVE INSIGHT SERIES TM (EIS) The Executive Insight Series TM (EIS) assists high-potential Pan-Asian managers, senior professionals and young executives attain leadership roles in major U.S. corporations. Features five Ascend-created interactive modules focused on executive leadership skills for groups of up to 30 high-potential managers and recent executives Modules developed/delivered by Pan-Asian corporate executives and available exclusively to Ascend corporate partners nationwide and to local chapters Scope covering real-life management decisions made, what behaviors, skills, competencies, and experiences are needed at the executive level, and the unwritten rules of the game EXECUTIVE INSIGHT FOR WOMEN (EIW) Ascend created The Executive Insight for Pan-Asian Women (EIW) program to help mid-level Pan- Asian female managers address common challenges as they rise within their respective organizations in corporate America. MYTHS OF ASIAN LEADERSHIP Myths of Asian Leadership program examines common misconceptions about Pan-Asians and why so few Pan-Asians in global corporations reach the senior level. Despite the strong work ethic, academic achievement and extensive contributions to business, few Pan-Asians have obtained senior leadership or executive level positions. Identifies the top Myths of Asian Leadership Facilitates understanding and enlightenment of the Myths are they real or not? Presents concrete ways for Pan-Asians to overcome these myths, limitations or excuses EXECUTIVE PRESENCE, ARE YOU STANDING OUT? You are smart and driven; you work hard, and are good at what you do. But that alone may not be enough to get you a promotion or a leadership position leading to the corner office. Numerous other factors that constitute "executive presence" also play a vital role in how far you go from your wardrobe to your ability to inspire colleagues. 14 Regional and Chapter Programs INSPIRING ACROSS GENERATIONS (IAG) CONFERENCES Inspiring Across Generations (IAG) regional conferences gather our corporate and community partners for a day of leadership, mentorship and relationship development programs providing insight and benefits for both students and seasoned professionals. These conferences also provide networking opportunities with leaders, professionals and students at the local level. LEAD (LEADERSHIP, EMPOWERMENT, ADVANCEMENT, AND DEVELOPMENT) SERIES Ascend s LEAD Series helps members develop and strengthen leadership skills that enable them to advance and achieve their professional goals. Executive panelists from diverse fields share experiences including what shaped their decisions and perspectives. Mentoring circles and/or a general question and answer session follow the panel discussion. MENTORSHIP The 12-month mentoring program provides the tools necessary to enhance leadership, teaching and coaching skills. Mentors have the opportunity to strengthen knowledge base and improve communication skills while gaining satisfaction and recognition by helping mentees gain insight that help them develop professionally. 14
15 Regional and Chapter Programs (cont d) BUSINESS ROUNDTABLE / CXO SERIES This series of events is designed to foster discussions among business executives of companies. The objective of the program is to create relationship opportunities for midlevel and senior executives, enhance financial and business knowledge, showcase successful Pan-Asians and discuss complex and relevant business issues. Sample topics have included: Mergers & Acquisitions, Clean Technology, Doing Business in Asia and Healthcare in the US. NETWORKING INITIATIVES Ascend seeks to identify, develop and empower Pan-Asian leaders. Ascend targets individuals from variety of companies and students from top tier universities to participate in networking activities. The goals of Ascend Networking Initiatives are to: Provide networking opportunities for business development and career development Present opportunities to students to enhance knowledge of major corporations, network with potential employers, and develop relationships Build new relationships with peers from variety of companies
16 Regional and Chapter Programs (cont d) COMMUNITY OUTREACH INITIATIVES Ascend gives back to the community through participation in a variety of volunteer events. The goals of the Community Outreach Initiatives are to: Provide opportunities to the members to give back to the community Increase Ascend s presence in the community STUDENT CHAPTERS AND MBA AFFILIATES Our student chapters focus on fostering the next generation of Pan-Asian leaders. Student chapters organize networking events, company visits, and deliver programs focusing on leadership training and provide resume and interview critiques. These chapters bring unique value to the members by creating a platform for career development and by helping them build a network of mentors and coaches. Existing MBA clubs are part of our MBA initiative and affiliate program. The Greater Washington Chapter currently fosters a close relationship with the University of Virginia Darden School of Business, officially called a Student Business Alliance.
17 Regional and Chapter Programs (cont d) AFFINITY GROUPS, EMPLOYEE RESOURCE GROUPS (ERGs) AND BUSINESS RESOURCE GROUPS (BRGs) Ascend works with corporate affinity, diversity and multicultural groups to bring content and programming to partners and other organizations. We help these groups share best practices and enhance their value to corporations. We work with associations such as Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting (ALPFA), National Arab American Bar Association (NAABA), National Association of Asian American Professionals (NAAAP), and Asian Pacific Bar Association (APABA) to increase external involvement and relationship-building. MEMBERSHIP AND SOCIAL PROGRAMS Membership and social programs complement our professional programs to build deeper relationships in the community with networking functions and other fun-filled activities.

Almost a quarter of our membership are midlevel managers, and another 30% are senior managers and executives. Our Chapter provides various types of programming for all members throughout their careers, although most programs tend to focus on our mid-level and junior members since they comprise the majority of our membership Census
