2 Lesson 1 How to study Demonstrate a positive attitude toward related training throughout your apprenticeship by completing all assignments and participating in classroom activities. Develop and demonstrate good study habits by being prepared for class and asking pertinent questions related to the lesson.

3 Lesson 2 Attributes of and IBEW Apprentice List the qualities which identify a competent, qualified Journeyman electrical worker. List the quality characteristics the JATC seeks in an applicant for apprenticeship. State the primary purpose for which apprenticeship exists.

5 Lesson 4 IBEW History Participate in a discussion concerning the history of the IBEW. Display an appreciation for what the IBEW has to offer its members. Be knowledgeable of the IBEW and its contributions in dignifying the lifestyle of all electrical workers. Develop a positive attitude toward the industry and contribute to its cause.

6 Preamble to the Constitution 1. To organize all workers in the entire electrical industry in the United States and Canada, including all those in public utilities and electrical manufacturing, into local unions. 2. To promote reasonable methods of work. 3. To cultivate feelings of friendship among those of our industry 4. To settle all disputes between employers and employees by arbitration if possible 5. To assist each other in sickness or distress

Explain the possible repercussions of participating in harassing activity. React appropriately to a situation involving sexual harassment.

13 Learning Objectives 1. Define sexual harassment in the workplace. 2. List factors which are considered by the courts in sexual harassment cases. 3. Identify sexual harassment activity. 4. Explain the possible repercussions of participating in harassing activity. 5. React appropriately to a situation involving sexual harassment.

14 Sexual harassment at work occurs whenever unwelcome conducton the basis of gender affects a person s job. The two basic types of sexual harassment as defined by the law. A. quid pro quo (this for that) B. hostile environment Can a co-worker, who has no control over other workers employment, commit quid pro quo sexual harassment? Explain. No, quid pro quo sexual harassment can only be committed by someone who controls the victim s employment destiny.

15 Is asking (in the proper manner) a co-worker to go out on a date a form of sexual harassment? No, not as long as the invitation is presented in a civil manner and not knowingly unwelcome. List nine ways a sexually hostile work environment can be created. 1. Discussing sexual activities 2. Unnecessary touching 3. Commenting on physical attributes 4. Displaying sexual pictures 5. Using inappropriate terms 6. Using distasteful gestures 7. Alienating workers by gender 8. Granting job favors to those who participate in consensual sexual activity 9. Using offensive language

16 Courts now recognize the fact that men and women have different levels of sensitivity when it comes to behavior in the workplace. List six factors the courts often consider when they are determining whether or not a hostile environment was created 1. Whether the conduct was physical or verbal 2. How frequently the conduct was repeated 3. Whether the conduct was hostile and blatantly offensive 4. Whether the harasser was a coworker or a supervisor 5. Whether the harassment was by more than one person 6. Whether the harassment interfered with work performance

17 Due to the fact that legal boundaries concerning sexual harassment are so poorly drawn, what is the best course of action to follow in the workplace? Simply avoid all sexually offensive conduct. If you are trying to determine if your own conduct is proper, what is a good question to ask yourself? Would I act the same way if members of my family were present? Would I like to see members of my family treated in a similar manner? Only unwelcome conduct can result in sexual harassment.

18 When an advance by a coworker is unwelcome, how should the recipient respond? With an outright, clear concise rejection. If you are not interested let the other person know. When should incidents of sexual harassment be reported? Immediately (by reporting the situation, the victim can expect corrective action to be taken).

19 If you are a victim of sexual harassment, list three things you should NOT do. 1. Blame yourself for someone else s behavior 2. Choose to ignore the behavior, unless it is truly non-offensive 3. Try to handle severe harassment yourself In what year did the courts establish the reasonable woman rule concerning harassment situations? 1991

20 List five possible disciplinary measures which may be imposed upon an employee found to be guilty of sexual harassment. 1. An oral or written warning 2. Deferral of a raise or promotion 3. Demotion 4. Suspension 5. Discharge Are women the only victims of sexual harassment? No, any form of unwelcome sexual advance directed at any employee may be the basis for a founded charge of sexual harassment.

21 Lesson 8 Economics of Employment Identify personal traits on the job which lead to further employment. Determine which actions are detrimental to customer relations. Describe customer concerns about lost time and loss of productivity.

22 Lesson 9 Safety Never Takes a Break Identify why safety on the job is so important. Define certain terms used in discussing safety. List key factors involved with safe work practices. Begin to develop a sense of respect for electricity.
