Under general supervision, to operate light power-driven maintenance or construction equipment and/or to perform semi-skilled and responsible maintenance and construction work as a major work assignment; to act as a lead man; and to do related work as required. Positions in this class involve the operation of light and moderately heavy power-driven equipment, in a variety of working situations, requiring a greater degree of skill in hand manipulation of steering and control mechanisms than the equipment used by the Maintenance Worker I class. Supervision of subordinate employees as exercised by Maintenance Worker II is incidental to other duties. TYPICAL TASKS: REQUIREMENTS: Operates light and moderately heavy power-driven equipment such as oiler, loader, roller, motor sweeper, backhoe, boom truck, or rodder in the Maintenance Services Department activities as a major work assignment; may occasionally operate heavier equipment on a temporary or training basis; performs heavy and semi-skilled construction and maintenance work when the nature of the job does not require constant operation of assigned equipment; maintains and makes minor on-the-job adjustments to equipment. Acts as lead worker and personally performs semi-skilled work, applying knowledge of the techniques and skills in the use of tools and equipment of the various trades and crafts as a major assignment. When the nature of the work does not require the exercise of supervision or utilization of specialized skills, he/she performs the more routine duties of a Maintenance Worker I. Minimum: High school diploma or equivalent and two years of experience in street, water, or park construction or maintenance work, including some experience in the operation and repair of light, power-driven equipment or the performance of responsible semi-skilled construction and/or maintenance work. Must be able to pass a pre-employment physical examination, including drug screen. Possess a valid satisfactory Class B California driver s license or obtain one within six (6) months of hire date with a satisfactory driving record.

2 KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES: Desirable: Knowledge of the operation of power equipment including light tractors, mixers, loaders, mowers, chippers, backhoes, and related equipment; knowledge of tools, methods, and materials used in street, water, or park construction and maintenance; ability to skillfully and safely operate the particular type of equipment assigned; ability to perform semi-skilled maintenance and construction work related to the activities of the department where the duties are performed; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to keep simple operating records; ability to work cooperatively with others. SELECTION PROCESS: A select number of the most experienced and best qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the selection process. The first step in the process will be a written exam. For those passing the exam (pass point is 70%), the written test score will be weighted as 25% of the overall score. Those passing the written exam will be invited to the oral board interview. Scores from the oral interview, which also has a pass point of 70%, will be weighted as 75% of the overall score. Applicants must pass both tests in order to qualify for placement on the eligibility list. Candidates considered for a second interview may be asked to participate in a performance skills assessment. CURRENT BENEFITS & WORKING CONDITIONS: Retirement: Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS). Effective 7/1/14, the City contributes 4% of the employee's portion toward retirement with a retirement formula of 2% at age 60 for Classic PERS Members as defined by pension reform effective 1/1/13. Employee contributions increase over the term of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). Please see MOU for complete details. MOU is available online a Under pension reform (PEPRA) effective 1/1/13, those defined as New Members of PERS are eligible for the 2% at age 62 retirement formula, contribute 6.25% toward the employee contribution to PERS, and are not eligible for EPMC. This position does not participate in Social Security. Deferred Comp: Vacation: Holidays: Sick Leave: Longevity: Bilingual Pay: Health Insurance: The City makes available a deferred compensation plan (ICMA) for employee contribution. Twelve working days vacation for the first four years of service. Maximum 25 days annually after 20 years of service. Thirteen and one-half days per year and seven days of floating holiday time. Accrued indefinitely at the rate of one day per month. 2% at twenty (20) years of service. 2% for one language and 4% for two or more languages. The City offers Kaiser and Blue Cross PPO. Effective 1/1/14, the City contributes $ for employee, $ for employee +1, and $ for family coverage with the employee contributing a portion of the monthly premium. 3 Other: Probation: The City pays 100% of the premium for dental coverage for the employee and dependents. Dental plan includes orthodontic coverage. The City pays the premium for life and disability insurance for the employee only. Employee must successfully pass a six (6) month probationary period.
