3 1 Introduction This is an overarching document that outlines the Work/Life Balance policy for Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (the Trust). The Trust is committed to improving the working lives of staff and believes that considering its approach to employment for this purpose, whilst meeting the service needs, will continue and improve delivery of patient care. The Trust recognises the contributions of its staff who are expecting to be or who are parents, including civil partners and gives similar support and time off to adopting parents. It encourages the right to request flexible working to all eligible employees. 2 Purpose It is also acknowledged that there will be occasions when employees will need to request official leave for domestic, personal and family matters or are required to be absent from duty for essential civil and public duties. The purpose of this policy is to ensure those eligible staff have access to information to enable them to plan their time off in respect of their statutory rights and enhanced NHS contractual benefits of those members of staff who meet some additional criteria not required under statutory arrangements. 3 Scope This policy and associated guidelines apply to all staff employed directly by the Trust. 4 Definitions Work/life balance is the term used to describe working practices that acknowledge and aim to support the needs of staff in achieving a balance between their home and working lives. 5 Duties / Responsibilities Director of Workforce is responsible for consultation and policy communication during the policy development. The HR Managers will contribute to the development and review of the policy before consultation and approval by the Workforce & Communication Group. They will assist in the communication and dissemination of the policy. They are responsible for providing advice and guidance to staff and line managers on the implementation of this policy. Managers will ensure that effective and efficient services to patients and service users are maintained. 4 Managers will ensure staff are aware of this policy and the guidance to support work/life balance and apply the guidance in an effective, fair and consistent manner. Staff It is the responsibility of all members of staff to follow Trust guidelines in applying for leave under this policy. 6 Guidelines The guidelines listed below are intended to inform eligible staff of their entitlements and to assist them in completing the documents they will need to submit to their manager prior to the commencement of the relevant leave.
