1 Perfecting the Job Search: Steps to Securing Your Dream Job Core Values Values are traits or qualities that are considered worthwhile. They represent an individual s highest priorities and deeply held driving forces. Value Examples: Honesty Integrity - Communication - Teamwork Values Statements: Are grounded in values and define how people want to behave with each other in the organization. It is a statement of how we will value customers, suppliers, and each other. Value Statement Examples: Honesty Telling the truth no matter what! Integrity Honoring your word Communication Communicating upsets within 24 hours Teamwork Lending a hand Values Exploration Values list Write down 20 values on note cards or a piece of paper Weaning Process: From the 20 pick your top 10. From the 10, pick your top 5 & list them below

4 Finding The Right Salon/Spa Find A Leader: Look for attributes, characteristics and personality traits that you can identify with Be sure you are aligned with their core values, vision and mission Research their background, experience and education What is their commitment to your growth and how will they accomplish this? What product lines are they affiliated with? What is their retail philosophy? When will they spend time with you? What is their expectation of you and why is this important to them? How were you greeted when you walked in? Does the energy and feeling in the environment match what the owner or manager is saying to you about it? Training & Development: Does the business have a new hire orientation process? Is there continuing education? If so, in what form (in house, shows, etc) and how often? Will you have to be in an assistant training program? How soon will you be put on the floor building your client base? Do they have a formal written training plan or calendar and can you see it? Marketing Do they have a plan to help you build your client base? Is there a formal written marketing plan? Ask about the following: referral program, rebooking, retail promotions, color and/or add on specials, cross marketing and events Systems Do they have an employee handbook with written policies & procedures Are there scripts that teach you how they want you to handle situations that arise Written guidelines for: Opening, closing, using software, daily tasks, weekly tasks, monthly tasks Compensation & Benefits What is the compensation plan and is there an opportunity for advancement? Is there retail commission and/ or bonus plans? Is there education reimbursement? Is there health insurance and 401K/retirement plans?

5 Interview Preparation 5 key components to creating a resume: 1. Personal contact information 2. Objectives 3. Experiences/Skills 4. Accomplishments and Education 5. References Accomplishments Salon and Spa owners want to hear about what you accomplished while you were in school, share numbers and percentages whenever possible. They want to know: How many regular clients did you serve a week? What was your average service ticket? What was your average retail ticket? What was your rebooking % and the number of referrals you received? Did you set weekly service and retail goals while in school? Portfolio Development 4 key sections of a portfolio: 1. Introduction: overview, qualifications 2. Career Pursuit Information: Resume, Letters of Recommendation 3. Sample Work: This is why an ipad would be great! Social media pages work really well too! 4. Achievements: Ex. Top retailer, perfect attendance, testimonials For more information on the above points please reference a past PBA webinar: Transition in Style From School to Salon Preparing For The Day Of Your Interview Look the part. Do they have a dress code, be fashionable, match their environment Create a list of questions: Does the salon/spa offer continuing education opportunities? What does the training program involve? How does the salon promote itself? What expectations do they have for service and retail goals for their technical team? What is the form of compensation? Do they offer any employee benefits? Your Story/Personal Achievements. These stories demonstrate all those hard-to-measure qualities like teamwork, initiative or accountability. Wherever possible, quantify what you ve done, such as share your numbers. Your average retail ticket, or # of guests you serviced each week or your success of % of rebooking guests. Practice. Practice your technique on friends and models, stay fresh and practice answering questions in an interview. Have a respected friend mock an interview with you. You ll be polished

6 and less nervous. Research. Review the information you have gathered about the salon. Opinion. Get another opinion. Have someone review your resume and portfolio to help you make any final tweaks so you are ready to go. Industry Trends. Are you up to date on current trends and techniques in the industry.
