Currently, manufacturers are taxed with a unique situation growing their organizations while coaching their current staff and priming their future leaders. Kirkwood Training & Outreach Services has collaborated with industry experts to develop a new training program to groom tomorrow s manufacturing leaders today. The Leadership in Manufacturing Certificate allows you to join a cohort of other individuals within the manufacturing industry to learn from, share ideas and develop relationships, while building leadership skills. Training classes are held every other week and during the nonsession weeks, participants will have the chance to apply their newly developed skills and knowledge in real world situations. Individuals will have the opportunity to complete both level one and level two certificates. Tuition includes all materials. 3 TRAINING SCHEDULE - LEVEL ONE Vision, Mission, Strategy, and Understanding Emotion at Work Explore the role of company mission, vision and strategy in today s manufacturing environment. Examine strategic leadership to maximize organizational resources for higher performance. Compare and contrast various strategies for a variety of department, line or shift needs and changes. Examine self-awareness as a key to leadership success. Apply current ideas about emotional intelligence to understanding others in everyday situations. Find out why understanding emotion is important in leading change and motivating others. September 20, 2017, 8am-2pm Organizational Skills of a Leader Today s leaders must manage all resources effectively and efficiently, including time and priorities. Examine methods of time management, learn to plan more effectively, and apply daily techniques for production. Practice assessing situations and managing interactions, including conversations, even more effectively. October 4, 2017, 8am-12pm Operations Planning and Prioritization The focus of this class will be on understanding the foundational principles of effective prioritization and planning strategies in the manufacturing environment. Techniques for successful operations management will be examined and applied to a variety of situations common in manufacturing settings (e.g., scheduling, capacity planning, forecasting). October 18, 2017, 8am-12pm Expert: Dr. Mel Gonnerman, Jr. Methods of Quality Management Examine popular methodologies and principles (e.g., Lean Management) that can be applied to increasing quality and implementing continuous improvements. Understand the role of internal and external customers and how everyday quality decisions are affected by organizational structure, processes, culture, and communication practices. Practice ways to improve and brand your leadership through impression management, body language and presentation style. Apply new techniques to daily writing and communication with others. November 15, 2017, 8am-12pm Expert: Dr. Mel Gonnerman, Jr. Customer and Public Relations Strategies Building relationships both internally and externally is a critical function. Recognize the role and implications of social media and work. Examine techniques for building professional reputation, methods for professional presentation, and the effects of poor decisions and negative comments in and outside of work. November 29, 2017, 8am-12pm Professional Communication for Daily Interactions In today s business environment we use more rapid-fire communications than ever before; we spend hours each day checking and responding to messages. When meeting in person, we only have one chance to make a first impression, and success may hinge upon your ability to communicate effectively. Even the very words you choose may be holding you back. To help us become better, we will learn professional written and verbal communication techniques to use with both internal and external customers. 5 TRAINING SCHEDULE - LEVEL ONE Understanding Leadership Styles to Build Stronger Teams Communication is a critical area for organizations today and leaders must not only model best practices but demonstrate them too. This session will utilize a number of resources to help participants understand their own leadership style better and apply that insight to build stronger teams. Discussion and activities will help everyone understand what they need to do to grow as a leader as well as what motivates and helps their team communicate better. January 10, 2018, 8am-12pm Moving from Buddy to Boss Moving from peer to supervisor isn t an easy transition. Even if you have been leading for a long time, there is always something we can improve on. Focus in this session will be on additional techniques to lead by example. We ll identify key issues in setting boundaries and building internal relationships. Participants can practice key conversations with former peers, other departments and other internal customers. Managing meetings and presentation style will also be included. January 24, 2018, 8am-12pm Resolving Conflict Conflict is a necessary and inherent part of organizations. Recognize the various types of conflict and the various styles for response. Learn to identify and diagnose core issues. Practice critical conversations to begin dialogue when conflict impacts team and performance. February 7, 2018, 8am-12pm Expert: Dr. Randy Richards Problem Solving and Performance Management Apply previous learning to a variety of employee and organization situations where conflict occurs. Examine ways to respond to various types of problems at work. Compare and contrast different approaches to solving a variety of performance management challenges in the daily life of a supervisor. February 21, 2018, 8am-12pm Expert: Heather Woody During the course of the Leadership in Manufacturing program I learned that it is important to understand myself better and what my strengths are in order to be a good leader. Practice methods to analyze financial performance including cost of goods, cash flow and potential loss and waste. Learn standard budgeting processes. Gain an understanding of profit cause and effect. March 7, 2018, 8am-12pm Expert: Dr. Michael Bootsma Human Resources for Daily Management People-related costs are a significant portion of any organization s operating expenses. Learn more about the legal requirement of human resource management. Review best practices for hiring and employee relations, and gain a new understanding for organization decisions and costs associated with total compensation, benefits management, and staffing strategies. March 21, 2018, 8am-12pm Expert: Dr. Conni Huber Critical Thinking for Future Success and Graduation Improve skills to assess situations, understand information, and identify core problems from different perspectives in order to take or suggest best possible solutions. Examine options and understand unintended consequences or implications. Review common thinking and decisionmaking errors. Analyze decision-making models, cause and effect applications, and issues surrounding critical thinking, ripple effect and management strategies. Apply information to daily challenges as well as longterm operational planning. Compare and contrast various organizational challenges and key leadership actions required to move from strategic planning to tactical action. Explore external factors including industry, technology, and competitive environment, as well as internal factors of culture, structure, leader influence, and physical resources. April 18, 2018, 8am-2pm Leading Today s Multiple Generational Workforce Apply learning to a fun and challenging topic. Recognize the various contributions of generations at work today. Identify strategies to engage and retain employees of all ages. Utilize practical suggestions to apply immediately back at work to teach and model for others. May 2, 2018, 8am-12pm Expert: Heather Woody Developing Accountable and Motivated Employees Examine the leader s role in establishing culture, expectations and the climate for performance. Distinguish when to lead and when to champion. Compare and contrast various types of performance management techniques. Evaluate methods to set clear expectations and develop accountability in others. May 16, 2018, 8am-12pm Expert: Dr. Dan Ebener Logistics and Supply Chain Management In our increasingly interconnected world, the role of logistics and supply chain management is critical to the economy, meeting manufacturing production and supply goals, and fulfilling customer demand for products. Review of key concepts and processes, practical considerations for manufacturing managers and supervisors, and strategies for improved efficiencies in supply chain networks and product flow. Discussion of current issues, challenges, and opportunities in logistics and supply chain management. May 30, 2018, 8am-12pm Expert: Dr. Dan Bumblauskas My participation in Leadership in Manufacturing taught me how to apply critical thinking when resolving conflict and problem solving. 8 TRAINING SCHEDULE - LEVEL TWO Project Management Part 1 Learn the key principles of project management. Examine stakeholder roles, communication planning, timelines, and setting tasks. Recognize the importance of back and forward scheduling, as well as cross department project coordination. Understand your role and how to leverage work styles for project success. June 13, 2018, 8am-12pm Expert: Dr. Daniel Tuuri Project Management Part 2 Practice with a variety of visual tools to organize projects and plan work, including proposals, risk assessments, checklists and Gantt charts. Apply learning to management, and learn methods to manage conflict, hold others accountable, and improve communication to get results. June 27, 2018, 8am-12pm Expert: Dr. Daniel Tuuri Lean Leadership Part 1 Examine Lean as a method of continuous improvement. Learn how to successfully lead a Lean project. Evaluate methods to lead projects and influence others for results without formal title authority. Develop ways to apply Lean processes to projects at work. July 11, 2018, 8am-12pm Expert: Cheri Kampman Lean Leadership Part 2 Learn more about Lean as a continuous improvement method. Understand what Lean tools and events are. Identify the impact of waste. Examine key parts of a process and value stream. Practice new tools to help improve collaboration, root cause identification and process improvements. Review progress of Lean projects and groupshare, while identifying items to tweak before next session. July 25, 2018, 8am-12pm Expert: Cheri Kampman Organizational Culture and Climate Examine the critical role of a leader s impact on culture and climate. Compare and contrast various leadership and management strategies to impact structure, communication and service. Identify steps to developing a customer-focused plant that recognizes the impact of everyone s work for the final product and end user. 9 TRAINING SCHEDULE - LEVEL TWO The Changing Organization Respond and lead through various types of change in companies. Recognize stages of transitions and plan for responses to change. Compare and contrast techniques for keeping employees motivated through change, while responding to shifts in the organizational environment. Discussion and activities will also apply to the way we learn at work through change and various train-the-trainer techniques leaders can apply to help their employees succeed. August 22, 2018, 8am-12pm Leading Forward and Graduation Focus will be on the continuing leadership journey and the challenges organizational changeagents must be ready for in the coming years. Individual follow-up action steps will be identified. Session includes final presentations of key learning and a recognition celebration. 10 Facilitators Dr. Celina Peerman is a trainer and instructional designer specializing in organizational behavior and human resource management-related topics. Her experience includes senior leadership roles in profit and non-profit organizations. Her work in Southeast Asia and Canada further developed her strong international interests. For 20 years, Celina has facilitated discussions on workplace behavior for local, state and national audiences. Celina s passion is for how people behave at work - the good, the bad and the worst. Her style has been described as dynamic, noting the ability to draw in even the most resistant attendees through real life examples and humor. Dr. Mel Gonnerman, Jr. is the Director of Industrial and Organizational Services at The Peerman Group where he provides companies solutions in the areas of training, organizational planning, and leadership development. He has a Ph.D. from Northern Illinois University where he studied social and industrial/organizational psychology. He is a former faculty member in the psychology department at the University of Northern Iowa, research operations manager at the Center for Social and Behavioral Research at UNI, founder and executive director of a non-profit organization, and corporate planner and marketing director at a manufacturing company. Experts Dr. Dan Bumblauskas is an Assistant Professor of Management at the University of Northern Iowa and was previously an Assistant Teaching Professor of Management at the University of Missouri. Dan is also Vice President of PFC Services, Inc. Dan conducts research and teaches courses in operations management, service industry operations, production systems, six sigma, and supply chain management. As a consultant, Dan works with businesses in various industries to develop new business and improve operational efficiency. He particularly focused on information sharing processes and data mining for the Sears.com Knowledge Base. Dan is a distinguished graduate of Iowa State University where he has been conferred B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees. Dan s doctoral work was completed in the department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering at Iowa State University. Dan also completed a master s degree program in general management at Harvard University. Terry Whitson is an independent training and development consultant with over 25 years of experience in corporate training. She earned a Masters in Training and Development from Drake University and an undergraduate degree in business with a marketing emphasis from the University of Iowa. Terry has been an adjunct faculty member at Kirkwood Community College since 1988 and Mt. Mercy University since She has worked as a training manager and corporate trainer for several large companies. She also gained valuable insight into customer communications from her early work experience as a customer service manager. Dr. Randy Richards is the co-director of the St. Ambrose Master of Organizational Leadership program and a professor of Philosophy and Managerial studies at St. Ambrose University. He has been a visiting professor at many universities all over the world. Randy is a published author with a focus on Behavior Styles in Managing Conflict. He received his Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Iowa, his M.A. in Philosophy from Georgetown University, and his B.A. in Philosophy from St. Ambrose University Leadership in Manufacturing Certificate

11 Experts Heather Woody is a success coach who teams with individuals personally and professionally to help them experience their greatness. She has a passion for walking with people as they uncover their path to true success, goal achievement and fulfilled lives. She conducts her coaching with individuals and in small team dynamics. Heather is a graduate of Coach U, one of the largest international training organizations for professional coaches and holds a B.A. from the University of Northern Iowa in public relations and communications. She recently completed her Master Certification with the Certified Coach Federation. Dr. Michael Bootsma graduated from Iowa State University with a Bachelor s degree in Accounting and Finance, and graduated with a Juris Doctorate and Masters in Accounting from the University of Iowa. He is a licensed CPA and a licensed attorney in the state of Iowa. Michael has held various professional positions in the areas of law and accounting, and currently teaches law, cost accounting and taxation classes for Iowa State University as a Dean s Teaching Fellow in Accounting. He is the primary author of Comprehensive Business Law. Dr. Conni Huber is the Director of Human Resources for the City of Cedar Rapids and is responsible for all aspects of human resources, including recruiting and retention, training, organizational development, labor relations, compensation and benefits, safety, health, and wellness. She has been with the City for 12 years and has acted as Director of Human Resources for seven years. Huber holds a Master s degree in Management and a Doctorate degree in Adult Education. Prior to joining the City, she gained 15 years human resources experience in the retail and insurance industries. She spent six years as a staff and faculty member in higher education. Huber has served as an examiner, team lead and coach for the Iowa Recognition for Performance Excellence board. Dr. Dan R. Ebener has been practicing leadership and developing leaders since He teaches leadership full-time for the Masters of Organizational Leadership (MOL) program at St. Ambrose University and serves part-time as director of planning for the Diocese of Davenport. Dan has traveled to 61 countries, most of them on mission trips, and has presented in 43 states and 14 countries. Dan is the author of three books, including Strategic Planning: An Interactive Process for Leaders. A second career academic, Dan served as director of Catholic Charities in Davenport from Dan has consulted with over 100 organizations through his consulting business, Quad City Leadership Consulting, and provides leadership training and strategic planning for nonprofits, churches, government agencies and corporate businesses. Dr. Daniel Tuuri is the Director of Business and Information Technology at Kirkwood Community College. In this capacity, he supports the department through strategic initiatives, identifying curriculum opportunities, and leading and onboarding part-time faculty. Prior to Kirkwood he was a faculty member for eight years at both the university and community college level teaching Project Management and IT. He holds a Masters in Information Systems Management and has completed his coursework for a Doctorate in Community College Leadership. He has attended the World Futures Society meeting and had work published in The Futurist, the official publication of the World Futures Society. Cheri Kampman has an approach to lean consultation that is best described using these two words: collaboration and facilitation. Cheri s style is to ask thought provoking questions, listen, reflect, suggest, guide and ask more questions. It is Cheri s intent that those with whom she works will be equipped with knowledge, tools and resources to carry their goals forward once her work with the organization is complete.
