MENTOR S GUIDE MCF by MCF Youth Exchange Arad, Romania MultiCultural Foundation 1
MENTOR INTRODUCTION The mentorship is a personal development between an experienced person and a less experienced person. The experienced person is called mentor, while the less experienced person is called apprentice (mentee). The mentor leads and guides the mentee by sharing their knowledge, social capital and psychosocial support in an informal way. Mentoring is a dynamic and non-competitive nurturing process that promotes independence, autonomy, and self-actualization in the protégé while fostering a sense of pride and fulfillment, support and continuity in the mentor.[1] Mentoring occurs when a senior person (the mentor) in terms of age and experience undertakes to provide information, advice, and emotional support for a junior person (the protégé) in a relationship lasting over an extended period of time and marked by substantial emotional commitment by both parties.[2] Mentorig is a teaching-learning process acquired through personal experience within a one-to-one, reciprocal, career development relationship between two individuals diverse in age, personality, life cycle, professional status, and/or credentials.[3] 2 Mentor Creative Fun
WHAT IS A CREATIVE MENTOR? A creative mentor is a person that doesn t have fix resources or ways how to do things, but knows how to adapt to the volunteer, to the person, that needs help. He does things in a different way, not to follow the same ways as everyone, but to try to understand people and solve things with non fix resources. Luis Espinosa Spain A creative mentor is a person who advices his mentees individual and finds solution for individual problems, and by mentoring he develops himself and the mentees. Piotr Herold Poland A creative mentor is someone who guides you in your life. I came here as an EVS and I thought that mentor is correlated with the EVS, but here I discovered that you can find a mentor everywhere, he can advise you in an informal way. Giovanni Bussu Italy A creative mentor is a person who thinks outside the box, finds different solutions than the others. Vitalina Santana Portugal A creative mentor for me is someone creative, and who is able to sustain an interesting program. Răzvan Luchian Romania MultiCultural Foundation 3
WHO NEEDS A MENTOR? Children in kindergarten and primary school Entrepreneurs Soldiers Students Volunteers Ill people in hospital Religious people A new employee in the company A job counsellor Public decision makers 4 Mentor Creative Fun
WHY ONE NEEDS A MENTOR? The mentor holds greater experience and knowledge than the mentee The mentor develops the mentees competences The mentee is engaged in an informal learning process by sharing his successes and fails to the mentor The mentor and mentee are learning one from another and challenge each other Mentor profile: Helps in the learning process Leader Guide Influential person Helps with personal advices, doesn t give orders A person who spends free time with the mentee Integrates people Impartial Develops mentee s competences Has experience and knowledge Confident Role model Responsible Friendly Communicative Respectful Patient Flexible Creative Open minded Empathetic Positive attitude Good listener Receptive MultiCultural Foundation 5
MENTOR IN DAILY LIFE As a mentee, you are also expected to: Agree and commit to a schedule of meetings with the mentor Take ownership of your own learning Maintain confidentiality of the relationship Set up goals and decide how you will achieve them Mentor: Role Experienced role model Provides wisdom, advice, counsel, coaching, acceptance, motivation and moral support Facilitates professional development Integrates mentees Accepts assistance from mentees in the professional development Enjoys to pass on the experience, knowledge and wisdom to the mentees Build the mentees self confidence Give feedback 6 Mentor Creative Fun
MENTOR: RELATION Informal Mentoring Mutual identification Mentee selects role models Long term relationship Mutual agreement schedule Goals evolve over time Psychosocial and career support build in time Long term career goals Reciprocal learning Formal Mentoring Assigned mentor Mentor selected based on competences or experience Short term relationship Schedule designed by the organization Goals specified by organization Development of trust is restricted Short term career goals MultiCultural Foundation 7
MENTORING 1 TO 1 When you want to find a mentor you must think about: Who could provide you with the support you need? What is their knowledge/experience? What is their role? Who do they work with? Where can you find a mentor: Maybe you met someone at a course/workshop/conference/event? Maybe you have heard about their work/seen something they have written or posted. Maybe is an acquaintance, friend, family member. Create a list of persons who you identify as potential mentors. Get in touch with them. If they answer positive to your request, have a chat with them to see who wants to commit to a mentorship relationship. 8 Mentor Creative Fun
MENTORING A GROUP 1. Direct, collegial and Indirect Mentoring 1.1. Direct Mentoring is a relationship between two individuals a mentor and a mentee Collegial Mentoring is a relationship between two individuals who work in the same field, but are in different professional stages Indirect Mentoring is a silent mentor who does not involve direct contact with the mentee, but is the result of international efforts from mentor to be available to the mentee. 2. Informal Mentorship A relationship between the mentor and the mentee which develops spontaneously, when people have things in common for a long term duration. 3. Formal Mentorship A relationship between the mentor and the mentee which is developed within organizational structures designed to facilitate the meeting of the goals and objectives of the mentee in short term. Mentor responsibility Keep a professional relationship with the mentee Try to keep a neutral point of view Availability for the mentee Have knowledge in the field where the mentee needs help To respect all mentees confidentiality Mentor rights To be treated with respect Set meetings with the mentee Decline working with a mentee with whom you feel uncomfortable Refuse to do any unethical or inappropriate work Mentor ethics Promoting mutual respect and trust Maintain confidentiality Provide knowledge, experience, wisdom and development support Give advice and feedback Mentor techniques Develop and manage the mentoring relationship Guide and counsel Teach Be a role model Motivate and inspire MultiCultural Foundation 9
