Most people working in Heathrow fear becoming the victim of false allegations or abuse. It is one of the key reasons why Airport staff become GMB members. If you are not a member why not join GMB today? ( or contact ) LONDON LIVING WAGE AT HEATHROW AIRPORT The vast majority of workers at Heathrow do not receive the London Living Wage. GMB is campaigning on behalf of thousands of low paid workers at Heathrow, to make sure they're paid the London Living Wage or above. We're working with Heathrow Airport Ltd and Labour MPs local to the airport to support our campaign for a fair deal for low paid workers at Heathrow. HEALTH AND SAFETY There are hundreds of laws designed to keep airport workers safe and yet the Health and Safety Executive still recorded over 150 workplace deaths last year. And this figure doesn't include those who died in road or other transport accidents while carrying out their work, or the thousands who died from industrial diseases such as cancer, or from exposure to asbestos. Many others are injured or suffer long term debilitating illnesses which can also have a hugely negative impact on their families.

3 Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 states: It shall be the duty of every employer to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare at work of all his employees." The risk of slip and trip injuries to airport workers can be greatly reduced by: Carrying out risk assessments to consider potential slip and trip hazards such as spills of liquids, wet floors, unsuitable footwear, uneven surfaces, passenger waste, luggage. Removing potential obstructions. Providing warning signs or hazard cones where appropriate. MUSCULOSKELETAL DISORDERS (MSD) Each year in the airline industry, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) receives incident reports of employees injuring themselves through manual handling. The majority of these injuries result from baggage handling. Other work activities, such as cargo handling, pushing/pulling work equipment such as aircraft steps/baggage dollies etc are also high risk. In relation to employees sustaining MSD. Employees are also at risk of sustaining MSD when assisting disabled or reduced mobility passengers unless this activity is suitably managed. But there are simple steps to help reduce the risk of MSD: A strong GMB membership in a workplace can make sure that the employer deals with risks and provides protective clothing and good working practices. Unfortunately, accidents at work are still a regular occurrence, which is why belonging to a union is important. GMB members are covered by GMB legal service UnionLine as part of their membership package. This vital part of the GMB membership provides members with top class legal representation. STRESS AT WORK Stress is an increasingly problematic factor for Airport workers. Huge changes in workplaces over recent years have made many jobs much more difficult and stressful. This can be compounded if staff find that by being absent due to stress their job is then under threat. The Health and Safety executive (HSE) have produced some guidance on management standards for work related stress. GMB support the introduction of these standards and with our wide experience in dealing with stress in the workplace we can offer practical advice and support which can resolve your exposure to stress in the workplace. The legal case: The law requires employers to tackle stress. These Management Standards are not new laws and employers already have duties: Under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 an employer must: Assess the risk of stress-related ill health arising from work activities. Under the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 they must: Take measures to control that risk. HSE expects organisations to carry out a suitable and sufficient risk assessment for stress. This includes taking action and tackling any problems that are identified.

4 DIGNITY AND RESPECT AT WORK You have a right to the same fair treatment as everyone else in your workplace. But if you're not treated the same what can we do about it? Our GMB workplace organisers are trained to achieve equal treatment with employers. They organise workplaces so that collective action can keep GMB members safe from unfair conduct. Employers have a responsibility to make sure they comply with HSE standards. If you think you're being unfairly treated, constantly picked on, humiliated, physically or verbally abused, regularly threatened with dismissal or unfairly passed over for promotion then GMB can support you with your complaint. It is unlawful for you to be discriminated against because of gender, sexual orientation, disability, pregnancy, race, ethnic background, nationality, age or religion. If a GMB member is treated unequally or unfairly at work then the GMB's Legal Service is there to redress the unfairness. HEATHROW EXPANSION AND GMB GMB London Region, which represents workers at Heathrow airport, has long campaigned for the airport to be expanded in the interest of jobs in West London and in the wider economy of London and the UK. GMB welcomes that Heathrow has been given the go-ahead for a third runway at the airport that will see the creation of up to 180,000 jobs 40,000 in the local area double the apprenticeships at Heathrow, to a total of 10,000, and up to 211bn in economic benefits across the UK by It is only right that Heathrow workers and their families should benefit from the expansion with better pay and conditions.
