It exists to increase the impact and effectiveness of supporter engagement in constituencies, and to build capacity and skills for campaigns and advocacy among staff, campaigners and local lobbyists. It will ensure strategic links between our national and local campaigns and advocacy and increase the quality of direct engagement with politicians at a local level. It manages Christian Aid s Local Lobbyist scheme, enabling supporters to lobby their MP. This role will: (a) Partner with managers and colleagues in the UK nations, regions and campaigns executive to develop and implement regional campaigns and advocacy plans in the context of Christian Aid s overall campaign and advocacy strategies. (b) Build capacity of regional coordinators on advocacy engagement and advise on best practice for engaging with decision-makers. (c) Coordinate national initiatives that require local engagement with politicians. (d) Advise colleagues in the UK nations and regions on specific local lobby requests. 1

2 (e) Manage and deliver regular mailings to supporters who have signed up to be Local Lobbyists. Role context The post holder will sit in the in the UK Advocacy Team, within the Policy and Public Affairs Department (PPD). The post reports to the Campaigns Strategy Lead and is matrix managed for tasks by the Church Campaigns Manager. This role acts as a liaison between national advocacy staff, campaigns staff in Supporter and Community Partnerships Department (SPD) and staff in Christian Aid offices in the regions and nations. This role will also participate in cross divisional and cross organisational groups as appropriate. Key outcomes Increased capacity at the local level to do lobbying and campaigning in the context of corporate advocacy priorities Supporter presence and current engagement with MPs is mapped and information shared in a timely and useful manner, so that local campaign capacity is well identified and increased Regional staff have increased skills to do local advocacy. Advocacy skills and insight are shared, supporting nations and regional colleagues to do better local advocacy Shared regional advocacy strategy for MP engagement which is informed from local and national experience All staff know how to log engagements with MPs and other decisions makers, and use this knowledge to inform advocacy activities. Local Lobbyist mailings are managed and delivered as agreed with a small cross departmental team. Role requirements Relationships External The post holder will be in regular contact with Christian Aid supporters, particularly on our local lobbyist scheme, by , post and phone to support them with local MP engagement. The post holder will be in contact with MPs/researchers occasionally but will primarily advise others to be able to do so. 2

3 Internal The post holder will work with many internal colleagues across the organisation but primarily those listed below. UK Advocacy colleagues to work on a shared strategy which maximizes the impact of local level campaigning and lobbying. Campaigns colleagues in PPD and SPD by advising on how local lobbying and campaigning can be utilised in line with advocacy strategies which are informed by local experience. Campaigns colleagues in national and regional offices by working to organise local lobbying, strengthen the knowledge and abilities of supporters, using knowledge of local experience to actively inform and shape the organisation's advocacy strategy. The post holder will help local offices to develop advocacy strategies in the context of national strategies (will vary on location and capacity). Decision making This post will work with SPD campaign colleagues and local regional staff to further knowledge and understanding of national advocacy strategies, identify and implement opportunities for influencing at the local level. Analytical skills The post holder requires an understanding of national politics and the role of local politics within this. Developing self and others The post holder will be responsible for developing the skills and knowledge of others regarding advocacy and campaigning. The post holder may supervise the Church Engagement Project Officers working on advocacy or campaigning projects. Person specification 3

4 Applied skills/knowledge and expertise Essential Proven experience of building constructive working relationships with diverse stakeholders, and of working in networks or coalitions Proven ability to work to tight deadlines and prioritise work effectively. Experience of working in advocacy, campaigning or communications in an NGO, public policy or similar environment Experience of delivering training or workshops. Strong understanding of how policy change happens and of effective advocacy strategies Ability to communicate complex issues simply, both verbally and in writing Good understanding of the broader issues and current debates in international development; and in particular on issues which Christian Aid campaigns Good knowledge of NGO networks and coalitions working on related issues Undergraduate qualification in relevant social science, law or development studies, or commensurate experience. Desirable Qualifications in politics, development studies or related areas Research and/or work experience in the developing world.
