By providing advice to the Victorian Government in regards to policy and planning, Aboriginal Affairs Victoria is able to support the role of government liaison officers and strengthen communities in the process. By bringing their different personalities and experiences to the roles, ACLOs are able to build and develop relationships with Indigenous peoples and then assist police in maintaining these relationships through empathy and understanding. Through involving Indigenous businesses in the supply chain process, they are creating more opportunities for engagement within communities, and developing ongoing and sustainable relationships. In this session, Monica will explore: Engaging whole communities in projects Liaising with Indigenous workplaces to build sustainable relationships Increasing Indigenous involvement through ongoing approaches to participation Monica Gordon National Workforce Diversity Manager John Holland Group Questions and Discussion CASE STUDY Establishing Two-Way Communication Channels in Indigenous Liaison The role of an Indigenous liaison officer hinges on effective communication skills and the ability to maintain a strong Aboriginal voice within different contexts. As the point of contact between Indigenous peoples and organisations, liaison officers often act in a translation role ensuring that community needs, concepts, ideas and frameworks are reframed and rephrased so the message speaks to the appropriate cultural and social norms and sensibilities. In this session Stephanie and Gina will explore: Creating two-way communication channels for dialogue Maintaining a strong Aboriginal voice in different contexts Communicating community issues appropriately The presenters will share their experiences from their roles and then facilitate a workshop for participants to reflect and share the strengths and challenges that they encounter when communicating between diverse contexts. As the liaison officer, Fred Green creates awareness within communities around sound financial practices and good governance. This is achieved through continuing support and relationships with key community members. As the Aboriginal Liaison Officer, Donna assists staff in the practical aspects of how to achieve cultural awareness through engagement, consultation and communication to develop strategies to suit community needs. Through an initiative known as Public Calling, Indigenous employment within the Public Sector is growing through promoting posteducation pathways. In this session Gerrit will explore the role of liaison officers in engaging and developing Indigenous engagement in the workforce. The ICAP is mandatory for all DSE staff and educates staff with regards to Indigenous knowledge and values for land and cultural heritage management. In turn, this creates mutual understanding and improved relationships between Indigenous peoples and DSE. Through being genuine and fostering relationships based on trust and regular contact, liaison officers can motivate people to be involved and accountable for their own wellbeing. At the City of Port Phillip the development of effective policy frameworks through a Reconciliation Action Plan has provided a support structure for the role of Indigenous Policy Officer. Through exploring these questions, you will gain a greater self-awareness and a greater understanding of others and discover how you can utilise your leadership skills to enhance communication and performance in your role. What leadership means for First Australians will be discussed and strategies and approaches for refining these will be explored.
